Food as Medicine: Can nutrition be a prescription? 食物即药物:营养可以成为处方吗?
Pub Date : 2024-02-05 DOI: 10.32473/edis-fs452-2023

Diet and lifestyle behaviors can affect health status and the development of disease. The importance of nutrition in healthcare is especially relevant as one in five deaths globally can be connected to poor diet. Food can be an integral part of preventing, managing, and treating disease through personalized nutrition, medically tailored meals and groceries, produce prescription programs, and culinary medicine. This publication dives into how nutrients connect to disease and uses of Food as Medicine as an overview for general learners.

Pityopsis - Silkgrass Pityopsis - 丝草
Pub Date : 2024-02-05 DOI: 10.32473/edis-fr471-2024
Gage LaPierre, Michael G Andreu, Jazz Griffis
The genus Pityopsis, the silkgrasses, are perennial forbs that look like grass with silky, silver hairs. Recognizing different species of silkgrass is important for land managers who are striving to restore specific plant communities and for nurseries selling and distributing native plant materials throughout Florida. Academic botanical keys make identification of silkgrass species challenging for those without a botanical background. This publication provides a breakdown of botanical terms used to describe silkgrass species and a guide with pictures and descriptions of various species to aid in differentiating between them. In addition, the publication provides information about phenology, seed harvesting, and propagation for silkgrasses and presents many practical applications for these attractive and useful plants.

Introduction to Southern Highbush Blueberry Cultivation in Containers 南方高丛蓝莓容器栽培简介
Pub Date : 2024-02-01 DOI: 10.32473/edis-hs1476-2024
Gerardo H. Nunez, Martin Zapien, Douglas Phillips
Blueberry bushes prefer well drained, acidic soils with high organic matter content. These soil characteristics are not common in many parts of the world. Thus, blueberries are traditionally grown in soils amended with pine bark and elemental sulfur. The need to create optimum conditions for the roots of blueberry bushes has recently led to blueberry cultivation in containers filled with soilless substrates. The intended audience for this publication is commercial blueberry growers. The purpose of this publication is to complement existing information sources by introducing the materials and practices used for blueberry cultivation on container-based farms.

Phytophthora Root Rot on Southern Highbush Blueberry in Florida 佛罗里达州南方高丛蓝莓上的疫霉根腐病
Pub Date : 2024-02-01 DOI: 10.32473/edis-pp347-2024
N. Flor, Douglas A. Phillips, P. Harmon
Roots serve the vital function of water and nutrient uptake for plants. Healthy roots provide the foundation for productive blueberry bushes and require the right horticultural inputs and soil environment to thrive. Less-than-ideal conditions can result in unhealthy, rotten roots, sometimes caused by disease. The most common and destructive root rot disease of southern highbush blueberry (SHB) in Florida is Phytophthora root rot (PRR), caused by the oomycete pathogen Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands. Oomycetes, or “water molds,” favor water-saturated environments. The distinction between oomycetes and fungi is important for disease management, because many fungicides work for only one group, not both. Worldwide, P. cinnamomi is a devastating pathogen of approximately 5,000 woody plant host species. For blueberry growers in Florida, PRR is a persistent problem that is currently managed through careful site selection, preparation, and routine Phytophthora-specific fungicide applications.
