The Djarkadougou gold prospect is located on the Birimian greenstone belt of the Hounde exploration permit held by the company Orezone Inc. The permit is at 275 km far from the capital Ouagadougou south- western Burkina Faso, West Africa. This area is based on sheared and metamorphosed greenschist facies rocks. Metamorphism locally reaches to the amphibolite facies around intrusions. There are two major lithological units whose interface is marked by a NW-SE trending shear corridor: an unit of andesite-basaltic rocks of andesitic breccias in the East and volcaniclastic and sedimentary unit composed flows, tuffs and felsic to mafic breccia, interbedded volcano-sedimentary rocks. All this together is intruded by plutonic rocks, and various felsic to mafic dykes. These rocks have undergone ductile to brittle heterogeneous deformations and hydrothermal alteration sericite ±carbonate ±quartz±sulphide within deformation corridors. The rocks of the East and West domains affected by three phases of brittle-ductile deformation (D1, D2, and D3) and the meteoric alteration is systematic in superficial facies of Djarakadougou core drilling.Geochemical analysis shows a tholeiitic to calc-alkaline volcanic serie characteristic a bimodal volcanism. The spectra of normalized REE chondrites are generally flat and constant reminding those of N-MORB basalt. The chemical compositions of andesite and basalt are deferred on several discrimination diagrams especially Th / Yb - Nb / Yb and 2 Nb - Zr / 4 - Y show that andesites and basalts of the prospect are issued in geotectonic setting of volcanism preponderant arc.

Compared to other wetland ecosystems mangroves are well known for their numerous ecosystem services, especially carbon pool. In Ghana, there is limited information on the sequestered carbon in mangroves. There is increasing interest on national climate change mitigation and adaptation plans in mangroves in developing nations, and Ellembelle in the Western Region of Ghana is of no exception. Ellembelle is one of the areas with little information on the size and variation of mangrove carbon stock which needs to be addressed. This research is aimed at determining the carbon stock from the carbon sequestered in mangrove and the areal extent in mangrove forest using remote sensing and allometric equation. The ecosystem carbon density estimate for the mangrove forest was weighted based on their spatial distribution across the landscape to yield a total carbon stock of for the Ellembelle mangrove forest. The error obtained from the 95% Confidence Interval was + 1.53%, which is within the acceptable levels of uncertainty based on the Monte Carlo Analysis. The overall carbon estimated for 2015 based on the area for mangrove (374.49 ha) was 1.550Mt with an uncertainty of + 57.125Kt indicating a high amount of carbon sequestered in mangroves.

This paper aims to study the characteristics of surface subsidence induced by longwall mining under poor ground conditions in Indonesia by means of numerical simulation techniques using finite difference code “FLAC3D”. The effect of mining depth in cases of single panel and multi-panel longwall mining, the influence of panel and pillar widths, and the impact of backfilling material, were incorporated into the FLAC3D software. The simulated results indicated that the angle of draw and maximum surface subsidence were significantly associated with the depth of mining, the number of extracted panels, the width of panel and pillar, and the type of backfill. In single panel mining, the largest maximum surface subsidence is observed in case of the shallowest mining depth, and it gradually decreases as the depth increases. In contrast, the angle of draw increases with increasing the mining depth. In multi-panel mining, the angle of draw and maximum surface subsidence increase as the mining depth increases. Moreover, the angle of draw and maximum surface subsidence decrease when the narrow panel and large pillar widths are adopted, and the backfilling materials are applied.

The results of the analysis were subjected to five (5) indices: contamination factor (CF); Ecological risk factor (Er i ); Enrichment factor (EF); index of geo-accumulation (Igeo) and anthropogenic factor (AF). The CF results showed that the River PomPom dry and wet season sediments were collected in February and July respectively from 0cm to 10cm depth. Stainless steel spoon was used to collect the samples. The sediment samples were packaged, labeled and refrigerated for onward transportation to the laboratory. All samples were oven-dried (50 o C) for about 24 hours, sieved through -80 mesh. About 1.0g of each sample was digested, filtered and the filtrates were ready for heavy metal analysis using Atomic sediments were most contaminated with Fe in both seasons, least contaminated with Cd at dry season and Zn in wet season. The Er i factor revealed pollution hazard level of middle during wet season and tiny in dry season. Pb and Ni showed strong and middle hazard level during wet season and Cu revealed middle level during dry season. The enrichment factor indicated extremely enriched for Fe in all locations in both seasons while most heavy metals showed depletion to minimal enrichment. The Igeo for both seasons showed that Fe was moderately to highly polluted in all locations. During dry season, other heavy metals showed moderately to unpolluted while in wet season Cd, Ni and Pb indicated moderately to very highly polluted. In both seasons, the % AF was very high for Fe, Cu, Pb. The AF% was very high for Ni and Cd in wet season. All sites in both seasons have experienced deterioration but more in the wet season. From these indices, the stream sediments have been significantly contaminated with Fe, Ni, Pb and Ni in most locations in both seasons.

We analyze seawater temperature and salinity in the immediate vicinity of the Paulbreen front in Spitsbergen. The CTD-measurements were carried out from ice in winter and from a boat in summer. ADCP profiling was performed near the glacier front from the ice in winter. In winter, we found water with lower salinity than the surrounding water in the fjord at a distance of 15 m from the glacier front and recorded a low upward water flux near the glacier. Relatively fresh water was found at a depth of 2-4 m near the glacier front in the place where the sea and glacier bed have local depression up to 17 m. Supercooling of the freshened water reached 0.35°C. We link this phenomenon to a flow of freshwater from under a polythermal glacier. This water becomes overcooled in the seawater with significantly lower temperature and higher salinity.
