Air-filtering backpack wins IET national challenge [News - Briefing] 空气过滤背包赢得IET全国挑战赛[新闻简报]

A backpack incorporating features to tackle air pollution which can trigger asthma has won an IET competition that invited young people to design their own backpack with STEM-inspired gadgets or capabilities. Twelve-year-old Eleanor Wood took top spot in the `Backpack to the Future' challenge with a design inspired by her mother's experience with asthma. Her winning design features a built-in air filter and fans, powered sustainably by solar panels and a dynamo. The goal is to filter polluted air, helping the eight million people in the UK who suffer the often crippling effects of asthma.

The innovative world of automotive manufacturing could be about to get a lot more contentious due to disruption led by electric vehicles, lower barriers to entry and the divergence of global supply chains. Established automakers and leading OEMs could end up losing ground to agile new entrants if they fail to adequately prepare.The global automotive industry is undergoing a period of rapid technological and manufacturing transformation. Electrification, digitalisation, autonomy and connectivity are reducing the dominance of established OEMs and introducing greater uncertainty about the shape of the industry, particularly in the fast-growing EV market. The emergence of new technologies has encouraged a number of start-ups and non-traditional players to enter the market. Changes in the technological and manufacturing landscape will also necessitate a change in strategy around the protection of intellectual property.

Amid a global "perfect storm" of raw material shortages and supply chain disruptions, businesses worldwide are facing significant challenges, leading to increased costs and delays in delivering goods. The causes of these issues are complex and varied, ranging from hyper-competition and customer demands to climate change and geopolitical tensions. The article identifies different tiers of issues that affect supply chains, from the direct impact of war or pandemic-related closures on raw materials to indirect effects, such as rising fuel prices that impact power supply. The bullwhip effect, where a sudden surge in demand exacerbates shortages, is another issue affecting the industry. The article suggests that businesses need to adapt to survive, with suggestions ranging from building resilient supply chains to looking for alternative raw materials.

What the harbour porpoises, razorbills and recreational kayakers will make of the whirring turbines beneath the surging seas around Anglesey is largely unknown. But a patch of ocean off the coast of North Wales is now the focus of an emerging and under-exploited source of energy - tidal power. If all goes to plan, it could become one of the largest tidal energy sites on the planet.
