The art of connecting: an exploration of art-based attunement in art psychotherapy

Noa Fellous, J. Isserow
This article explores the concept of attunement from its initial experience within the dyadic mother-infant experience to the art-therapeutic relationship. It suggests that the three-way relationship characterizing the art-therapeutic work lends itself to communication within which shared experience and in turn, shared meaning and a sense of self, can be gained. Through a case example and a literature review, the role of the art and the vitality affects inherent in use of art materials as facilitators of this capacity to share, are brought to focus. Drawing mainly on psychological, psychoanalytic and child developmental perspectives, the potential part taken by the therapist and his limitations are examined. Keywords : attunement, cross-modal communication, primary and secondary subjectivity, dyadic and triadic communication, vitality affects

Considering the Function of Repetition in Art and Art Therapy
Pub Date : 2016-10-04 DOI: 10.25602/GOLD.atol.v7i1.401
Annamaria Cavaliero
This paper considers the use of repetition in art making processes in the fields of Art Psychotherapy and Fine Art. It asks whether there might be similarities between the two. It does not set up a hypothesis to be tested but is more a reflection on the subject, which could be developed into further research. Some of the art psychotherapy literature addressing uses of repetition is discussed. It is notable that this subject comes up quite often in the literature on autistic spectrum disorders and in mental health settings. The paper also looks at Freud’s 1920 essay on repetition and his ideas about the existence of a death instinct, followed by subsequent writing on this subject by Deleuze (1968) who challenges Freud’s definition of the death instinct. A recent case vignette from art psychotherapy clinical practice in an acute mental health setting follows this. Finally, consideration of repetition in the field of Fine Art/Visual Theory is presented. There is an attempt to identify common ground between the responses to repetition as a feature of art making.  Keywords:  Process, gesture, meditation, assimilation, rhythm

Construction of Adam's Hut: an adaptation of Art Therapy for men living in the special ward of an acute psychiatric hospital in Finland

‘A hut, a shelter, or an object serves as a transmitter between unknown forces inside and outside the self’ (Kaj Noschis, 1986). The project described here used an adapted Art Therapy group in ways intended to provide localised primary experience for adult men who had histories of deprivation from early childhood. The men had great difficulty in taking in any benefit from their usual psychiatric care because of their early deprivation and also their difficulties in interacting verbally and in using symbolisation. The idea for this art therapy group project emerged from an interest in studying the needs of male patients treated by a special ward. The men were admitted to the special ward when they could not be treated in a mixed ward because of their very impulsive or aggressive behaviour. The paper is a description of the realization of the group treatment and the work process of two art therapists who were satellite workers for this special ward.  Recognition of some of the vital needs of these patients was an important part of the work. The group was rewarding for all the participants and this was in stark contrast to what were usually negative experiences and difficult attitudes towards psychiatric care. The art psychotherapeutic approach is based on the Winnicottian work of Dockar- Drysdale. The final artefact is discussed as a piece of architecture and as a metaphor for the early bodily experience. The overall outcome is discussed using the ideas of Ester Bick, Didier Anzieu and Winnicott. The hut serves as a transmitter like the skin of the human being. The therapeutic idea would be ‘the consolidating of the hut’. The idea of Adam’s Hut was born as a result of an accumulation of clinical and artistic experiences, knowledge about psychic development and a set of problems present within the particular ward. Keywords: Primary experience; transmitting object between inside and outside the self; Symbolic realization by making art; Art therapy adapted to acute psychiatry; Skin. Identifying features such as the names of patients and the hospital have been anonymised.

The Light Within: A pilot study, or a ‘Note from the Field’, examining the spontaneous production of light-emitting astronomical objects in child art
Pub Date : 2016-10-01 DOI: 10.25602/GOLD.ATOL.V7I1.415
Gordon Chinamasa, T. Christian, R. Kimbell
The authors conducted research into the automatic artistic representation of luminous astronomical objects, especially the sun, in children’s art. 25 artworks were collected and analyzed from local-area school-aged children of varying ages (ages 5-17). It was found that 100% of the drawings produced by children displayed some type of luminous astronomical object. Of these, 92% exhibited the sun exclusively. Too, 92% of the qualitative descriptions by the child participants expressed daytime features per se. Furthermore, 88% of the drawings revealed, strictly speaking, preference for either left or right page-orientation. That is, children drew the sun on either the left or right side of the page; children very rarely drew light emitting objects in the center of the page. The authors speculate about the various and compelling meanings associated with the data by way of four theoretical models: 1) Biological; 2) Psychological; 3) Philosophical- Religious; and, 4) Anthropological.  Keywords: Psychology of art, Art interpretation, Child art, Philosophy of art, Psychology and Nature interface.

Interview with Art Therapist Gussie P. Klorer 艺术治疗师Gussie P. Klorer访谈

I firstly came across Dr. Klorer's work when researching the theme focused on implementation of attachment theory into art therapy practice. I read her chapter called 'Expressive Therapy for Severe Maltreatment and Attachment Disorders: A Neuroscience Framework' that was published in Malchiodi's book 'Creative Interventions with Traumatized Children'. I found her art therapy approach in work with traumatized children and those with attachment difficulties very inspiring. I later translated and published this article in Czech art therapy magazine. I also asked the author, if she would like to share her precious clinical experience with me by participating in my research interviews for my Master's thesis 'Attachment Focused Art Therapy with Adolescent Clients' and that is how the interview was born. It was conducted via a Skype call, on 21 February 2012. Since I was thrilled by the interview outcome, I felt that I do not want to keep it just for myself. I would also like to share it with others who may be interested in attachment focused art therapy practice. I myself edited and abbreviated the original interview in cooperation with the author.
