This article presents some initial thoughts about the frame in art therapy. Frame in Focus is the title of a film made by the author and Errol Fernandes, which was screened in Film Space as part of the afternoon events of the International Art Therapy Conference 2016. These thoughts came out of our discussions during the making of the film, discussions with audiences following screenings, and discussions with two colleagues, Sally Skaife and Jon Martyn, as part of a research project. I begin with the relationship between boundary and frame in the context of the audience viewing the art, then look at some examples of exhibiting and the ethical issues involved. The ethical issues arising from the film are explored. Keywords: Boundaries, frame, exhibiting, film, ethics, art therapy

We, the conference organisers, hoped the provision of an Art Therapy Large Group (ATLG) for the conference on each of the three days, would give delegates the opportunity to explore, through the use of art, performance and dialogue, their experiences of the conference and the dynamics that arise in a large group. We had run an ATLG at our first art therapy conference (Finding a voice, making your mark: defining art therapy for the 21 st century) in 2013, and hoped there might be some continuity between the first and second ATLG, a development of the dialogue of word, performance and image through time.

You must put yourself elsewhere . - Homi Bhabha (in Mitchell 1995) When we found out that the theme of the 2016 Goldsmiths Art Therapy conference was about place and space, we (Anita and Sheridan) submitted a proposal for a collaborative art installation that would consist of projecting images onto the canvas walls of a large tent. We proposed to ask conference delegates to send us images prior to the conference of culturally and emotionally resonant artworks or photographs that documented remembered and imaginary places and spaces that somehow connected with art therapy, including from delegates’ childhoods.

This paper considers how people with a diagnosis of psychosis are often marginalised in ways that influence both the environmental and psychological circumstances of their lives, and how these aspects of their lives are rarely discussed together. It also considers some of the ways the Service-User Movement; Outsider Art; and Art Therapy have contributed to helping people feel that they can move out of the margins and reclaim their lives. In order to do this, it discusses the historical and developing practice of Art Therapists in relation to people who have in their own language, “strange experiences”. The paper acknowledges throughout that the language used to describe people with mental health problems is rightfully challenged by the Service-User Movement. Keywords: Psychosis; Marginalisation; Service-User Movement; Outsider Art; Art Therapy.

This article brings the author s personal experience of training in art psychotherapy at a British university and returning to her home country Slovakia. The article presents the historical context of Slovakia on political, social and psychological levels and the impact of these factors on the development of art therapy. Art therapy training in Slovakia is scoped from early beginnings to the present day, mentioning organisations and individual people s contributions to contemporary art therapy. The author scrutinizes the place of art therapy in the Slovakian mental health system and is questioning of the current understanding of art therapy within Slovakia. The article is concluded by a discussion about the future of the art therapy profession in Slovakia and the task of finding possibilities through the author s personal engagement. Keywords : Art therapy, Training, Slovakia, Political change, Professional recognition.

This article is about a one-off art making workshop with children and young people in Kampala, Uganda. It is based on the theme of the United Nations (UN) Peace Day “Right to Peace”. This is in the context of the enduring political, economic and social instabilities in this region. The setting is a half-way house for unsettled children and young people who are homeless, often orphaned as a result of political unrest and who are likely to have experienced multiple trauma. The ‘home’ situation has a religious base. In addition to food, clothing and shelter, the ‘home’ provides a mentoring programme to the children and young people who live there, based on biblical teachings. This article reports on the workshop group process, the discussions and the creative activity based on the theme. The findings of the workshop and their relevance to the lives of the children and young people in the shelter are discussed. All names are pseudonyms and all personal identifiable information has been changed. Keywords: street children; trauma; basic needs; peace; art; religious symbols
