The development of compact antennas plays an important role in rapidly growing mobile communication market. This paper presents a novel design technique of the quad-band small internal antenna which covers GSM-900/DCS-1800/PCS-1900/IMT-2000 bands. The handset antenna is developed within the limits of a 44times25times4 mm3 volume. This proposed antenna describes a new idea of increasing operational bandwidth for the compact planar inverted F antenna (PIFA). The proposed idea introduces the open-end slots in the ground plane almost all under the radiating patch. The size reduction method is attractive from the point of view of practical antenna implementation.

Low-profile broadband planar antennas for DVB-H, DCS-1800, and IMT-2000 applications 用于DVB-H、DCS-1800和IMT-2000应用的低轮廓宽带平面天线

A new type of low-profile broadband planar antenna is developed for DVB-H, DCS-1800, and IMT-2000 handsets. The planar antenna for UHF-band DVB-H terminals has a height of 8 mm while the antenna height for DCS-1800 and IMT-2000 applications is only 4.8 mm which is much lower than previously published antenna configurations. The broadband planar antennas consist of an S-strip and a folded T-strip which are separately printed on the two sides of a thin planar substrate. The bandwidth enhancement is realized by the mutual coupling between the S-strip and the T-strip. It has been demonstrated that the antenna for DVB-H terminals can achieve a gain of -2 to -4 dBi (3-7 dB higher than the standard specification) over the DVB-H band (470-702 MHz) while the antenna for the DCS-1800 and IMT-2000 handsets can achieve a bandwidth of-30% for return loss <-10 dB.

Optimum performance of pyramidal absorbers using impedance loading layers 采用阻抗加载层的锥形吸波器的最佳性能

It was recently discovered in the works of Chambers and Ford (2006) that the inclusion of frequency selective surfaces (FSS) within the back section of the absorber can significantly improve the low frequency performance without significant increases in weight or cost. The aim of this paper is to use a simple transmission-line model of the impedance-loaded absorber structure to reveal what properties the FSS should have for optimal absorber performance.

This paper applies two nature-based optimization techniques - the genetic algorithm (GA) in the work of Haupt and Haupt (2004) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) in the work of Kennedy and Eberhart (2001) - to the design of a two-dimensional IR-visible metamaterial using realistic bulk silver parameters by maximizing a properly-defined figure of merit.

In this paper we present a new antenna design combining electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) antenna with a frequency selective surface (FSS) structure. A dual layer rectangular dipole array is used as a FSS structure in order to enhance the directivity bandwidth. The antenna has been realised and the measurements confirm the directivity bandwidth enhancement.

Shipboard line of sight (LOS) communication systems commonly rely on monopole and dipole antennas. When constructed out of segmented wires, the free space performance for these antenna types are well understood. This paper presents the results from a numerical study of deck proximity and mounting effects on the performance of a complex ultra high frequency (UHF) LOS antenna based on the multifunction electromagnetic radiating system (MERS) concept.

In this paper, a wideband slot antenna with coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed for IEEE Std 802.16-2004 applications is presented. By introducing the sunk ground plane, the narrow feeding-line, and the beveled inner-conductor, the required impedance bandwidth is achieved over the frequency range from 2.15 to 5.83 GHz (S11 < -10 dB). This proposed antenna with broadband bandwidth and small size can be suitable for communication products of wireless local area network (WLAN) or WiMax applications.

Macro-micro frequency reconfigurable antenna 宏-微频率可重构天线

In this paper, two representing diodes, the PIN diode and the varactor, are used for the Macro-micro frequency tuning. The PIN diode in the antenna is used for switching wireless service bands (Macro-tuning). As well as the varactor in the antenna is used for tuning frequency band to obtain the constant antenna gain (micro-tuning). The proposed antenna newly realizes desirable broad and fine frequency tuning at the same time for the reconfigurable wireless communication system.

A folded elliptical antenna with a stop band characteristic 具有阻带特性的折叠椭圆天线

A fan-shaped antenna has been proposed for UWB communications systems [T. Kondo et al., 2004][H. Nakano et al., 2006]. The fan-shaped antenna is a card-type antenna, where the radiation element and the ground plate lie in the same plane. The card-type structure facilitates the use of the fan-shaped antenna in PC card devices for personal computers or inside mobile phone handsets. Subsequently, an elliptical antenna, where the fan-shaped element in [T. Kondo et al., 2004][H. Nakano et al., 2006] is replaced with an elliptically shaped conducting ring, has been investigated and its radiation characteristics have been compared to those of the fan-shaped antenna [S. Hattori et al., 2005] [H. Nakano et al., 2005]. It is found that the elliptical and fan-shaped antennas have similar antenna characteristics.

The card-type structure facilitates the use of the fan-shaped antenna in PC card devices for personal computers or inside mobile phone handsets. Subsequently, an elliptical antenna, where the fan-shaped element in [T. Kondo et al., 2004][H. Nakano et al., 2006] is replaced with an elliptically shaped conducting ring, has been investigated and its radiation characteristics have been compared to those of the fan-shaped antenna [S. Hattori et al., 2005] [H. Nakano et al., 2005].
