Pub Date : 2019-12-06 DOI: 10.1093/mspecies/sez016
Gonzalo Ossa, M. Díaz, R. Barquez
Abstract: Lasiurus varius (Poeppig, 1835) is a vespertilionid bat commonly known as Chilean red bat or cinnamon red bat. L. varius is characterized by its deep reddish coloration without frosted appearance, and by the uropatagium covered with long hairs that extend beyond the trailing edge, which clearly distinguishes it from the other species in the genus. The distribution of this rare species is restricted to the southern parts of Argentina and Chile.

Choeropsis liberiensis (Artiodactyla: Hippopotamidae)
Pub Date : 2019-12-06 DOI: 10.1093/mspecies/sez017
Gabriella L. Flacke, Jan Decher
Abstract: Choeropsis liberiensis (Morton, 1849), commonly called the pygmy hippopotamus or pygmy hippo, is the only extant species in the genus Choeropsis. A solitary, forest-dwelling ungulate endemic to the Upper Guinean forest ecosystem in West Africa, it is classified as “Endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources and is a Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES) Appendix II species. The smaller of the two extant hippopotamids, it is relatively uncommon in zoological facilities and private collections worldwide.

Aegialomys galapagoensis (Rodentia: Cricetidae)
Pub Date : 2019-10-14 DOI: 10.1093/mspecies/sez013
Joyce Rodrigues do Prado, Alexandre Reis Percequillo
Abstract: Aegialomys galapagoensis (Waterhouse, 1839) is a sigmodontine rodent commonly called the Galapagos rice rat. It is a medium-sized rodent, characterized by dense, soft, yellow or copper, weakly grizzled pelage; the dorsum is grayish or brownish and the ventral pelage is pale. It is endemic to the open habitats of the Galapagos Archipelago, occurring on three islands, Santa Fé Island (Barrington Island), San Cristóbal Island (Chatham Island), and Santiago Island (James Island). Restricted populations are considered a major threat to A. galapagoensis conservation throughout most of its range, as well as competition with Rattus rattus. A. galapagoensis is listed as “Vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, and is listed as “Critically Endangered” on the Ecuador National list.

Tachyglossus aculeatus (Monotremata: Tachyglossidae)
Pub Date : 2019-10-03 DOI: 10.1093/mspecies/sez012
Peggy D. Rismiller, Frank Grutzner
Abstract: Tachyglossus aculeatus (Shaw, 1792) is a monotreme commonly called the short-beaked echidna. Although considered Australia's most common native mammal because of its continent-wide distribution, its population numbers everywhere are low. It is easily distinguished from all other native Australian mammals because of its spine-covered body, hairless beak, and unique “rolling” gait. The five subspecies, one of which is found in Papua New Guinea, show variations in fur density, spine diameter, length, and number of grooming claws. The Kangaroo Island short-beaked echidna Tachyglossus aculeatus multiaculeatus is listed as “Endangered” but all other Tachyglossus are listed as “Least Concern” in the 2016 International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources Red List.

Tomopeas ravus (Chiroptera: Molossidae)
Pub Date : 2019-10-01 DOI: 10.1093/mspecies/sez011
Paúl M. Velazco, Kerry A Kline
Abstract: Tomopeas ravus Miller, 1900 is a bat commonly called Peruvian crevice-dwelling bat. It is the only representative of the subfamily Tomopeatinae and endemic to the coastal desert of Peru where it is associated with woody savanna ecosystems and narrow rock crevices. Globally, it is considered “Endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, mostly due to the ongoing population reduction and small and fragmented geographic range.

Heliosciurus rufobrachium (Rodentia: Sciuridae)
Pub Date : 2019-09-30 DOI: 10.1093/mspecies/sez010
H. Thomas, T. Best, B. Agwanda
Abstract: Heliosciurus rufobrachium (Waterhouse, 1842), one of six species of Heliosciurus, is a sciurid commonly called red-legged sun squirrel. It is a medium-sized diurnally adapted tree squirrel occurring at ground-level to upper heights of the canopy of mature forests. It ranges from the west coast of Africa to Garissa County, Kenya. Adapted to an arboreal life, its frugivorous diet makes it a seed disperser for forest plants. In portions of West Africa, it serves as a source of bushmeat and it is a reservoir for human monkey-pox virus and Trypanosoma brucei, which causes African sleeping sickness. H. rufobrachium is listed as “Least Concern” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.

Dasypus kappleri (Cingulata: Dasypodidae)
Pub Date : 2019-08-27 DOI: 10.1093/mspecies/sez009
Carlos Aya-Cuero, Julio Chacón-Pacheco, T. C. S. Anacleto
Abstract: Dasypus kappleri Krauss, 1862, commonly known as greater long-nosed armadillo, is the second largest extant armadillo and readily distinguishable by the prominent spurs on the hind legs. It is diurnal-nocturnal, solitary, and insectivorous. It is a semi-fossorial species ranging east of the Andes across the central lowlands of South America. It occupies a wide range of habitats including rainforest, riparian forest, and grassland. D. kappleri is listed as “Least Concern” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources in light of its wide distribution, which presumedly contains robust populations.

Molossops temminckii (Chiroptera: Molossidae)
Pub Date : 2019-08-12 DOI: 10.1093/mspecies/sez006
Santiago Gamboa Alurralde, M. Díaz
Abstract: The dwarf dog-faced bat, Molossops temminckii (Burmeister, 1854), is a small molossid bat that occurs from Colombia, Venezuela, and Guyana, southwestward through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. It is one of two species in the genus Molossops and usually roosts in man-made structures, rock crevices, and hollow trees. The species is insectivorous, inhabits a variety of habitats, and is typically found in low altitude zones. Diagnostic characters include triangular ears separated by a wide space, one lower incisor in each ramus, and a last upper molar with three clearly marked commissures. Molossops temminckii is listed as “Least Concern” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.
