Irony is not a simple stylistic device used in literary work to enrich its meaning and themes. Irony is essential to both the writer's and the readers' cultural backgrounds. It is an important tool to understand inner identity and purpose in life. Consequently, many academic studies analyze its significant use and representation in different literary works. Jane Austen, on her part, is regarded as a master of using irony in her novels. Irony was her secret weapon to represent the suffering of women under the domination of the patriarchal society. Her novel, Emma , is not only a simple example of her use of irony, but it is her masterpiece, which is based entirely and fundamentally on irony. In Emma , the brilliant novelist has weaved her use of the various types of irony, namely, verbal, situational, structural, and dramatic, with an aesthetic value, turning its incidents and characters into memorable identities. The current study is devoted to examining the intermingling use of the various types of irony that reflect the unique literary talent of the novelist that skillfully matches her social critic role in fixing the vices of her patriarchal community.

This paper is an attempt to revisit the violation of humanity at the notorious Abu Ghraib prison in the light of New Historicism accompanied by analyzing the Neo-Colonial discourse as represented by Abu Ghraib literature. The samples taken here to outline the thesis of the paper are Jisr al-tuffahah (2019) by Awwad Ali (1957) and Standard Operating Procedure (2009) by Philip Gourevitch (1961-) and Errol Morris (1948-). The atrocities committed at Abu Ghraib at the hands of the American colonizer stand for a stark paradigm of humiliating a whole nation in the twenty-first century. In spite of allegations of humanism, the Abu Ghraib scandal demolishes such claims indefinitely. The current study handles specific incidents to pinpoint such cruel, severe and unjustified actions as portrayed vividly in the two selected texts. A comparison is drawn between these texts. Jisr al-tuffahah is written in the form of a blog which is a contemporary phenomenon. Standard Operating Procedure is testimonial literature which is peculiar to the post-modern era.

By the end of the 15th century, the Kingdom of Castile began expeditions to Africa by order of the Catholic Monarchs, which resulted in the establishment of Spanish colonies in the continent. The missionaries who accompanied the expeditions taught the Spanish language to the indigenous people, so they began to use it along with their tribal languages and continue to use it to this day. This use gave rise to the birth of Equatoguinean literature in Castilian in the mid-20th century. The objective of literature in the Spanish language in Equatorial Guinea was initially to transmit to readers in the metropolis an exemplary image of colonialism in Africa. It was limited to Spanish writers or pro-colonial writers. But with the independence in the 1960s, the situation worsened due to imposing a total censorship on all literary practices. However, this situation did not last long, since there was a military coup against the then president of Equatorial Guinea, Francisco Macías Nguema. The period following the coup witnessed a great progress in literary production written in Spanish, despite the obstacles it faced. With the spread of the Internet, literature written in Spanish by Equatoguinean writers began to flourish and spread, whether throughout their country or Europe. Topics

This study deals with the first stage in Douglass‟s humanization process. It centers on Douglass‟s childhood and early youth, his own experience with slavery, and his own self-education. As a former slave Douglass not only describes his experience with slavery but also exposes and describes the inner workings of the slavery system and how it dehumanizes both slave and master. In addition, he describes the strategy he develops for attaining his freedom. Accordingly, throughout his career as a writer, an orator, and a politician, Douglass devoted himself to the abolition of slavery. The study discusses post-colonial concepts such as power, ignorance or lack of knowledge, marginalization, othering and stereotyping, and finally identity conflict as representatives of the writer‟s lack of freedom and humanization as well as negative forces to be overcome by the writer in his journey towards freedom and humanization. The study also discusses how the theme of ignorance or lack of knowledge as demonstrated in Douglass‟s book confirms the destructive power of denying education to a group of people. The study concludes that Douglass‟s journey from slavery to freedom underwent many obstacles. However, Douglass managed to overcome these obstacles and liberate himself physically and psychologically through a process of self-education as well as physical resistance.
