Thinking in terms of ecclesiastical power as a negative force has often found a breeding ground in the Pastoral Epistles. To what extent is that justified? This article examines a passage that always comes up when the position of women in the church is discussed: 1 Timothy 2:8−15. Three aspects will be considered consecutively: power, powerlessness, and authorised power. Power says something about the underlying problem that Timothy faced: the male/female relationship in the Ephesian congregation threatened to degenerate into a power struggle. Powerlessness refers to the story of Adam and Eve mentioned in verses 13−15. The Genesis narrative recounts human weakness, which in 1 Timothy becomes a sort of triptych about Eve and creation, Eve and the fall, and Eve and redemption. Authorised power is the way in which the problematic situation in Ephesus was regulated with apostolic authority, to create space for the trustworthy Word. Paul’s instructions about the behaviour of women could nowadays easily be considered a kind of misogynistic power play. However, the apostle should be interpreted on his own terms. This is true both for his social context and for his missionary drive. KEYWORDS: power, man, woman, congregation, Paul

Protestantism in France has an ambiguous attitude to the surrounding culture, because of its position as a small minority. The other forces present are Roman Catholic authoritarianism and the liberal free-thinking of Enlightenment humanism, represented by the likes of Voltaire and Rousseau. The paradox is that since the Revolution in 1789, which was anti-royal and anti-religious, when Protestantism has sided with the majority Roman Church it has undermined its Reformed identity, and when it has sided with libertarian free-thinking it has undermined its Christian identity. This remains a feature of French Protestantism until the present day. As a result of this tension, the thought of one of France’s greatest thinkers, John Calvin, became virtually unknown, not only in French culture and society as a whole, but also within French Protestantism itself. In this article, the author gives an account of the life and theology of C.H. Spurgeon (1834-1892), the famous Reformed Baptist Minister, who preached in London in the second half of the nineteenth century. The account demonstrates that Spurgeon was not only the most renowned preacher of his day, most of whose sermons were published and are still read widely today but also an author who published many volumes. In addition to his work as preacher and writer, Spurgeon built children’s orphanages, started a theological college and assisted in many noble causes. As part of this benevolent work, his church contributed large sums to support poor relief. Having told Spurgeon’s story, the article then indicates six areas of Spurgeon’s life and ministry which are helpful for us today: his Passion for Souls; his Devotion to Prayer and Study; His attitude to the Bible & Expository Ministry; his Pastoral Ministry; His Practical Christianity; and His refusal to compromise on the truth of the gospel. At the end of the 20th century discussions about human freedom has become discussions about free will. Discussions about this topic end up with the polemic between autonomy and heteronomy. The idea of autonomy tries to eliminate all limitations that obstruct human freedom. But after all the limitations have been eliminated, there are some raise questions about internal authority in a person’s self that limits him or her. In the opinion of the writer, theologians who approaches the problem of human freedom as a ‘freedom from’ would never touch the essence of human freedom. Gerrit Cornelis Berkouwer discusses human freedom not with the ‘free from’ approaches that will lead to a secularistic humanism but tries to look at the meaning of freedom biblically, that is “true freedom.” This kind of freedom does not depend on both external nor internal authorities, but rather depend on the hope of eschatological liberation where the believers will be in full obedience to Christ. Gerrit Cornelis Berkouwer was a significant Dutch Reformed theologian. This article will observe Berkouwer’s concept of imago Dei based on systematic-biblical method. In other words, biblical concept will only support the systematic-theological based discussion. It will be demonstrated through this article that, in comparison to previous approaches of explaining the concept of the image, Berkouwer had made a significant contribution. That contribution is found in his emphasis on the functional aspect of being the image. In doing this, on one hand, he followed the path of Reformatory tradition, but on the other hand, he also diverted from the Reformatory tradition on some issues about the concept of the image. KEYWORDS: Berkouwer; imago Dei; human nature; human dignity; Postmodernism; analogia entis; analogia relationis; analogia amoris

This article seeks to promote an interest of the audience to read the Imitation of Christ, the second most read book by both Protestants and Roman Catholics after the Bible. The book is dated to pre-Reformation time and provides fruitful soil for the Reformation by keeping close to the Scripture and the primacy of Christ. The book’s three main motives sound strangely familiar to modern ears: the basic pairs of opposition coloring the current fabric of reality, the sovereignty of God, and the obedience of God’s people. Even today the book remains fresh with its honesty and practical value, despite its being firmly grounded in doctrinal rocks. KEYWORDS: Imitation of Christ; Thomas a Kempis; practical theology

Joseph Fletcher’s theory of situational ethics is so influential since the 20th century until this day. The fruits of his thoughts have spread to all aspects including medical ethics and medical law. Fletcher claimed that the situational ethics that he presented had its source from Lord Jesus’ and Apostle Paul’s teachings. But the theory of situational ethics is not agreed upon by all streams in Christianity including the Reformed stream. In this article, many points of Joseph Fletcher’s situational ethics in his book ‘Situation Ethics: The New Morality’ are discussed and analyzed according to Reformed perspective. This article seeks to express the uniqueness of John Calvin's understanding of the meaning of Imago Dei as his reaction to the understanding of the theologians of Irenaeus and Medieval Scholastic Aquinas, then to explain the implications of Imago Dei theologically in the context of God's creation along with its significance on self-identity in the digital age. Calvin restores Imago Dei's view back to the bible. His thesis is human must have the right knowledge about God and himself. It is only through Jesus Christ and His word can a man be renewed and knows himself as Imago Dei, so that he can glorify God again. And it is only through the work of the Holy Spirit can man reflects God in this world. KEYWORDS: Imago Dei; total depravity; redemption; renewal; knowing oneself.
