In power system operations, state estimation plays an important role in security control. For the state estimation problem, the weighted least squares (WLS) method is widely used at present. However, these algorithms can converge to local optimal solutions. Recently, modern heuristic optimization methods such as Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) have been introduced to overcome the disadvantage of the classical optimization problem. However, heuristic optimization methods based on populations require a lengthy computing time to find an optimal solution. In this paper, we used particle swarm optimization (PSO) to search for the optimal solution of state estimation in power systems. To overcome the shortcoming of heuristic optimization methods, we proposed parallel processing of the PSO algorithm based on the PC cluster system. The proposed approach was tested with the IEEE-118 bus systems. From the simulation results, we found that the parallel PSO based on the PC cluster system can be applicable for power system state estimation.

Recently, high temperature superconducting power cable (HTS power cable) is seriously taking attention to solve transmission line congestion problem of high electricity density urban area. However, HTS cable has different current-resistance characteristics-quench- compare to conventional copper cable, and it makes the protection and control of HTS cable more difficult. This paper suggests cooperative fault current control method to protect HTS cable. The cable model is composed of superconductor, shield, and former part. To examine the characteristics of HTS cable, coordination with SFCL (Superconducting Fault Current Limiter) is introduced. According to the simulation result, HTS cable wasn't protected by OCR (Over current relay) before SFCL was set up, whereas it was protected to set SFCL. Various countermeasure to decrease fault current, including SFCL, is necessary to operate HTS cable system securely.

In recent years, the voltage rise at the end of distribution line and the increase of harmonic voltages has become to be greatly concerned because of extreme expansion of distributed generation (DG) systems and excessive amount of static capacitors (SCs) for improving power factor. For compensating leading current and harmonic currents from consumers, the hybrid type of power quality conditioner was proposed. The proposed system consists of a LC series circuit, a series transformer and a self-commutated converter in order to reduce the capacity of the converter than the conventional type of static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs) and active filters (AFs). This paper presents SC bank quantity control to expand the range of the compensating current and DC bus voltage control of the converter in the hybrid type power quality conditioner. In this study, the performance evaluations for the proposed conditioner in terms of the control of the harmful currents are presented by the various simulations.

Recently, new dispersed power sources such as photovoltaic, wind power, fuel cell etc. are energetically interconnected and operated in the distribution systems, as one of the national projects for alternative energy. The technical guidelines on the interconnection of dispersed power sources have been established and conducted positively. However, protection devices (Re-closer) in primary feeder of distribution system interconnected with dispersed power sources like photovoltaic generation systems may cause problems of malfunction, and then many customers could have problems like an interruption. So, this paper presents the optimal method to minimize the impact of interruption, using MATLAB /SIMULINK. And, also this paper shows the effectiveness of proposed method by simulating at the field distribution systems.

Selection of custom power device for sags and interruptions mitigation has been a challenge in the utility and customer for many years. It usually depends on technical and economic characteristics of the device. Nevertheless, most mitigation method is selected by rule of thumb or empirical method. In this paper, the life cycle cost analysis is performed using either the deterministic or probabilistic approach. The difference between a deterministic and a probabilistic cost analysis approach is illustrated with five different case studies. The probabilistic cost analysis approach using Monte Carlo simulation which is powerful for iterative process provides comprehensive and alternative results.

This paper proposes a practical method for transmission expansion planning. This method suggests the optimization grid planning by integer programming using branch and bound method, which utilizes a network flow approach and the maximum flow-minimum cut set theorem to minimize investment budget of transmission line construction and subject to deterministic criterion using a program Cmexp. For. The timing priority of new line construction is determined on the comparison of probabilistic reliability indices of each new system using TRELSS 6.2 program. The new power system is verified an operation conditions as like as the power system stability by using a PowerWorld program. The proposed method has been tested on IEEE-MRTS.

This paper proposes a new method for extracting features of electricity price in power markets The proposed method is based on SAX(Symbolic Aggregation Approximation) of time-series data conversation. Under the deregulated and competitive power markets, it is important to extract the features of electricity price. To understand the complexity of electricity price behavior, this paper proposes a stream mining method with SAX that transforms the data into a symbol of alphabet. It is useful for efficient dimensionality reduction of time series and distance measures. The proposed method classifies time-series data into clusters with symbolic representation, and extracts the features from each cluster. The technique clarifies complicated data in a simply way of symbol representation. The effectiveness of proposed method is demonstrated for real market data of PJM.

This paper proposes a technique to detect fault locations in a three-bus transmission system using discrete wavelet transform (DWT). The comparison among the first peak time in first scale of each terminal (buses) that can detect fault is performed and the two fastest first peak time obtained from comparison are used as an input data for traveling wave equation later. A comparison of results obtained from three different types of mother wavelet is discussed in order to identify the fault locations with an application of traveling wave theory. It is shown that the db4 mother wavelet produces better results than those from ‘sym4’ and ‘coif4’, with a mean error of less than 400 m.

This paper proposes a novel method for distribution network loss minimization in distribution networks. The proposed method makes use of parallel meta-heuristics under PC cluster environment The liberalization of power networks with distributed generation makes distribution networks more complicated. To compete with other players, saving cost is of main concern. In this paper, a unified method is proposed to minimize the network loss with both network reconfiguration and capacitor control The formulation may be expressed as a combinatorial optimization problem. In this paper, parallel meta-heuristic method is proposed to solve the problem. The proposed method evaluates the solution with the PC cluster system. The proposed method is tested in sample systems.

This paper investigates the variations of wind power in Korea-Jeju and discusses the amount of reserve needed to handle unpredicted short-term variations. Construction of wind power plant has been rapidly increased since Korea-Jeju is known as the most suitable for wind power plants in Korea. But implementing wind power generation inevitably introduces new challenges due to its intermittent nature. In the paper, it is introduced the present and prospect of wind plant construction in Jeju. And it provides an indication of the variability of wind power plant and discussed the reserve of conventional power station for wind power fluctuation in Korea-Jeju power system. So, this paper proposes the way of secure operating in Korea-Jeju power network.
