In accordance with the development of recent computer technology, the dependency of railway signaling system on the computer software is being increased further, and accordingly, the testing for the safety and reliability of railway signaling system software became more important. This thesis suggested an automated testing tool for coding rules on this railway signaling system software, and presented its result of implementation. The testing items in the implemented tool had referred to the international standards in relation to the software for railway system and MISRA-C standards. This automated testing tool for railway signaling system can be utilized at the assessment stage for railway signaling system software also, and it is anticipated that it can be utilized usefully at the software development stage also.

This paper analyzes and compares the stability of a power system when either a new ac transmission line or a dc link based on VSCs is connected in the grid. The location of the new transmission line is determined by the restrictions in the transfer of power. From the controllability point of view, this is not the most suitable location for a VSC-HVdc to provide damping. However the voltage support capability of the VSC-HVdc can be exploited to keep the system from losing synchronism due to voltage collapse.

This paper presents a new method of modeling using a Dynamic Link Library (DLL) function in the Electro-Magnetic Transients Program — Restructured Version (EMTP-RV), in which we have simplified the procedures of over-current reclosing relay modeling. The EMTP-RV is the enhanced computational engine. and EMTPWorks is a new Graphical User Interface (GUI) of EMTP. The major improvements to EMTP-RV are a new approach with built-in models and encapsulation, user-defined modeling, and a code structure designed to be expandable to specialized toolboxes using the DLL function. The DLL function is designed to allow EMTP-RV users to develop advanced program modules and interface them directly and intimately with the EMTP-RV engine. The modeled over current reclosing relay is verified by simulating the various types of faults in the distribution system. The results show the validity of the over current reclosing relay model.

A HVDC test line that functions as a prototype variation was constructed in Korea, after considering the main functions and characteristics of diverse ±500kV DC transmission test line towers and the results of the analysis of the line's insulation, environment, fitting, transmission equipment, economic feasibility, and operational efficiency. The variable prototype test line has advantages in line-related researches, including in the fitting design, insulation coordination design, line construction technology and transmission equipment development, and does not require high-cost towers, unlike overseas test lines. The maximum applied voltage of the newly constructed DC test line was ±600 kV, and a measurement system was established around the line to evaluate the interference factors. Tests on various environmental characteristics will be performed to derive the optimal pole arrangement coordinates for the Korean environment, while changing the pole arrangement and height of the line using a large hoist installed at special arms in tower No. 2 and 3.

The deregulation of electric power utilities has been progressing all over the world including Japan. Therefore, it is useful for coming full liberalization to analyze current market price and its structure. In this paper, we analyze the market prices of JEPX (Japan Electric Power Exchange) by simple regression equations, of which explanatory variables are a value related to demand and the power price of 24 hours ago. The results of JEPX price data compare with the results of New England electricity market price data. Furthermore, as the regression analysis for the winter peak period is not good, we add temperature or crude oil price data as a new explanation variable to improve the coefficients of determination.

The diagnosis was investigated by using the acceleration measurement for mechanical failure and degradation of a SF6 gas circuit breaker (GCB). The mechanical model GCB was fabricated to produce similar acceleration characteristics to a real GCB. The MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical System) sensor was adopted for the purpose of confirming its applicability with the well-established piezoelectric accelerometer. The acceleration characteristics of the model GCB was generally similar to the real GCB of 300kV class, except the high frequency component. The MEMS sensor application was feasible with some limitations. It was indicated a mechanical failure could be detected by the acceleration measurement.

Through the development of phasor measurement units (PMU), various aspects of power system dynamic behavior could be monitored and diagnosed. Monitoring dynamic voltage stability becomes one of achievements we can obtain from PMUs. It is very important to select the method appropriate to the KEPCO system since there are many voltage stability indices. In the paper, we propose an advanced WAVI (Wide Area Voltage Stability) for monitoring dynamic voltage stability. It reflects the PMU installation plan of KEPCO, thus it is suitable for KEPCO system specially. The salient features of the proposed index are; i) it uses only PMU measurements without coupling with EMS data. ii) it is computationally unburden so that it can be applied to real-time situation. The proposed index is applied to the KEPCO test system and the result shows that it successfully predicts voltage instability through the comparative studies.

This paper addresses grid interconnection tests of a 3kW transformer-less photovoltaic (PV) inverter to verify the effectiveness of the PV inverter and promote its wide use. The 3kW transformer-less PV inverter, which was equipped with intelligent protection and control svstem, was manufactured. A hardware test bed was constructed for performance tests of the PV inverter. Control performance and grid protection tests were carried out using the test bed. Test results verify the performance of the power control and grid protection functions of the developed transformer-less PV inverter.

To investigate and evaluate the mechanics of how failures spread in power grids, this paper introduces a methodology for a credible list of critical N-k contingencies that would threaten the grids. The methodology is based on the concept of delta centrality. The list of critical contingencies will provide the look-ahead situation awareness for operators on any impending large power grid blackouts. We also propose novel indices which are simple to interpret and can be used to determine and identify locations of critical components caused by cascading failures. Build-ups of potentially high risk cascading failures can be monitored by these indices thus, providing wide area visibility of power system dynamics against threatening events. Results from 118 test bus system show a promising application for enhancing power system against rare and catastrophic outages.

Many critical control systems are developed using formal methods. When software applied to such systems is developed, the employment of formal methods in the software requirements specification and verification will provide increased assurance for such applications. Earlier error of overlooked requirement specification can be detected using formal specification method. Also the testing and full verification to examine all reachable states using model checking to undertake formal verification are able to be completed. In this paper, we proposed an eclectic approach to incorporate Z(Zed) formal language and ‘Statemate MAGNUM’ which is formal method tools using Statechart. Also we applied the proposed method to safety-critical railway signaling systems for the formal requirement specification and analyzed the specification results.
