Heterodyne laser interferometry has proved to be a valuable technique for high accuracy optical displacement metrology. In many applications in science and engineering, it is required a highly accurate measurement of multiple degrees of freedom of a critical device with regard to a mechanical system reference. An example is the primary calibration of standard accelerometers by interferometry. In this context, it is proposed a multi-channel system based on a heterodyne interferometer for simultaneous measurement of piston and wobble of the accelerometer top surface. The implemented system is based on a Michelson interferometer, with four parallel beams of equal intensity that enable simultaneous measurement of different points of the surface. The parallel approach reduces the complexity due the simultaneous use of common units (laser source, modulators and some optics), maintaining the high resolution associated with interferometric sources. In this paper we present a new metrology concept based on heterodyne interferometry that can allow the simultaneous measurement of a surface piston and wobble movement, detailing the physical model of the sensor, the prototype implementation and the performance characterized by the test result. The future steps towards an implementation in a primary standard accelerometer calibration setup are also described.

This work presents numerical results related to an in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer used as a refractive index sensor. The in-line Mach-Zehnder is based on abrupt tapers in standard single mode optical fiber. Numerical simulations were carried out using commercial software based on Beam Propagation Method in order to analyze the sensitivity response in terms of wavelength shift when this sensor is bent at certain radii of curvature. We realized that application of bending in the In-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer enhanced considerably the sensitivity of this sensor to the external refractive index. The best result was achieved for a radius of curvature of 10 mm (~500 nm/RIU for the refractive index range of 1.33 to 1.41) improving the sensitivity about eight times in comparison with the case with no bent.

In the last twenty years the growth of bacterial colonies has been studied experimentally using images with different growth patterns, but the resolution of those images is in areas of tenths of microns without range information. On the other hand, theoretical studies considering the bacteria as systems with collective behavior controlled by a reduced number of parameters have been developed. The present work aims to study morphological and dynamic growth of Bacillus polymyxa colonies by the technique of digital image analysis in wide-field microscopy, which provides high resolution, both in texture and topography. Getting a three-dimensional behavior of dynamic biological systems is useful to create structures and materials with different physical and biological properties for industrial applications.

The advancement in face recognition algorithm has a strong relationship with the availability of face databases that exhibit varying factors reflecting real life scenarios. The GUCLF face database is the first of its kind that can strongly influence the advancement in face recognition technology. In this paper, we introduce and describe our new face samples database collected using Lytro light field camera. The database consists of 200 reference samples and 303 probe samples collected from 25 subjects. The reference samples are collected in the controlled conditions using Canon EOS 550D DSLR camera. While probe samples are captured using both conventional digital camera (Sony DSC-S750) and Lytro light field camera. The probe samples are captured in three different scenarios: indoor, corridor and outdoor to include all possible real life conditions. In addition to the database description, this paper also elaborates on possible uses of the collected database and proposes a testing protocol. Further, we also present the quantitative results from the baseline experiments using the Kernel Discriminant Analysis (KDA).

In this work, a technique for measuring high frequency micro-vibrations by using non holographic fiber specklegram sensor is experimentally demonstrated. In our setup, a laser source emitting at 632nm is coupled to a structure of Singlemode-Multimode-Singlemode fibers which produce a filtering effect that is used as optical transducer. Mechanical perturbations of controlled amplitude and frequency are applied to the Multimode fiber, which is fastened at the ends to induce vibrations. Perturbations higher than 3 KHz and below one micron are perfectly recovered by the system, which additionally, exhibits a linear response. Due to the low cost and the simplicity of the technique, it becomes an interesting method for the implementation of fiber sensors in a wide range of engineering applications.

To measure different parameters of lower tear meniscus height (TMH) by using photography with open software of measurement. TMH was addressed from lower eyelid to the top of the meniscus (absolute TMH) and to the brightest meniscus reflex (reflex TMH). 121 young healthy subjects were included in the study. The lower tear meniscus was videotaped by a digital camera attached to a slit lamp. Three videos were recorded in central meniscus portion on three different methods: slit lamp without fluorescein instillation, slit lamp with fluorescein instillation and TearscopeTM without fluorescein instillation. Then, a masked observed obtained an image from each video and measured TMH by using open source software of measurement based on Java (NIH ImageJ). Absolute central (TMH-CA), absolute with fluorescein (TMH-F) and absolute using the Tearscope (TMH-Tc) were compared each other as well as reflex central (TMH-CR) and reflex Tearscope (TMH-TcR). Mean ± S.D. values of TMH-CA, TMH-CR, TMH-F, TMH-Tc and TMH-TcR of 0.209 ± 0.049, 0.139 ± 0.031, 0.222 ± 0.058, 0.175 ± 0.045 and 0.109 ± 0.029 mm, respectively were found. Paired t-test was performed for the relationship between TMH-CA – TMH-CR, TMH-CA – TMH-F, TMH-CA – TMH-Tc, TMH-F – TMH-Tc, TMH-Tc – TMH-TcR and TMH-CR – TMH-TcR. In all cases, it was found a significant difference between both variables (all p < 0.008). This study showed a useful tool to objectively measure TMH by photography. Eye care professionals should maintain the same TMH parameter in the follow-up visits, due to the difference between them.

Among many applications quantum weak measurements have been shown to be important in exploring fundamental physics issues, such as the experimental violation of the Heisenberg uncertainty relation and the Hardy paradox, and have also technological implications in quantum optics, quantum metrology and quantum communications, where the precision of the measurement is as important as the precision of quantum state preparation. The theory of weak measurement can be formulated using the pre-and post-selected quantum systems, as well as using the weak measurement operator formalism. In this work, we study the quantum discord (QD) of quasi-Werner mixed states based on bipartite entangled coherent states using the weak measurements operator, instead of the projective measurement operators. We then compare the quantum discord for both kinds of measurement operators, in terms of the entanglement quality, the latter being measured using the concept of concurrence. It’s found greater quantum correlations using the weak measurement operators.

The main goal of this study was to investigate the effect of accommodation on eye's optical quality. Wavefront aberrations data of 35 young emmetropic eyes were measured with the L80 Wave+: (1) ocular aberrations were measured with the wavefront sensor, while the subjects fixated at far and near (40 cm), (2) corneal wavefront aberrations were computed from the Placido disk system's data for distance vision conditions and (3) the internal wavefront component of the eye were determined as the difference between ocular and corneal wavefront aberrations. Wavefront aberrations data of 35 young emmetropic eyes were measured with the L80 Wave+: (1) ocular aberrations were measured with the wavefront sensor, while the subjects fixated at far and near (40 cm), (2) corneal wavefront aberrations were computed from the Placido disk system's data for distance vision conditions and (3) the internal wavefront component of the eye were determined as the difference between ocular and corneal wavefront aberrations.
