In 1715, a French observer commented that Salvador appeared to be a "New Guinea", due to the diversity of slave origins. However, in spite of this diversity, Salvador had a high concentration of enslaved Africans who shared similar origins. These slaves came primarily from the Bight of Benin, the second largest slaving region in Africa. The article aims to discuss the presence of gbe-speakers (ardras, minas and jejes, primarily) in Bahia in the eighteenth century. The work by Luis Nicolau Pares, A formacao do candomble, highlights the presence of Africans from the gbe-speaking area in eighteenth-century Bahia. Yet, it is necessary to investigate the Atlantic dynamics resulting in the deportation of gbe-speakers to the Americas on the light of new sources. In exploring the connections between the political events in the Bight of Benin and the Bahian slave trade, the article also seeks to discuss the numbers and origins of those exported to Bahia. I intend to combine quantitative analysis on the numbers of the transatlantic slave trade and the records in the probate and baptismal records in order to shed light on the lives of these West African groups in eighteenth-century Bahia.

Study concerning the administrative practices and social relations established by the directors of a microcosm of the brazilian administration: the Military Settlement of Sao Pedro de Alcântara do Gurupi. It investigates, stemming from the diverse historiographical approaches on the thematic and by an exhausting documentary research, the different forms in which the imperial administration in the Second Reign was carried through, taking as both starting and arriving point the Military Settlement of Gurupi. Created in 1853, this colony was an enterprise of the Brazilian government in the Empire, installed in the right edge of the Gurupi river, in the border between Maranhao and Para. The guardianship of the State ended in the year of 1878, excited by the recurrent questionings on the efficiency of this enterprise. This study stems from the historiographical debates about State and power, as well as the debate about the public administration in Brazil. It is based, basically, in primary documentation, resting upon the historical and sociological literature concerning the thematic.

Abstract: Through a critical examination of the possibilities of social improvement available to black women and their descendants, this article discusses social mobility among Afro-descending people in the town and precincts of Sabara, Minas Gerais, in the eighteenth century. Using various notarial documents (inventories, wills, deeds of sale, etc.) and papers from the municipal council of Sabara, this study investigates the types of economic success enjoyed by women of Afro-descent and the limits to their social mobility; the impact of inheritance procedures on the transfer of socio-economic resources from one generation to the next; and the strategies black women employed to ensure that transmission of their property to their children would translate into social advantages.

The Provedoria-Mor da Saude of Pernambuco (Brazil), the government agency which took care of public health in Pernambuco, was created in 1810. Thereafter, slave ships that arrived at Recife were visited by health agents who verified if the recently arrived enslaved people carried diseases which were considered contagious, according to the 19th century medical sciences. Only those who carried the said maladies were sent to the Santo Amaro Leprosarium to be treated. Once they were healed, they were returned to their owners to be sold. The employees of that health agency examined slave ships that carried more than 47 thousand people to Recife. Their reports help us to understand how the slave trade was carried out in a major Brazilian harbor, before it was declared illegal in 1831.

This article discusses the issue of domestic slavery in coffee plantations located in the Paraiba Valley during the second half of the XIXth century. It is divided into two main parts. The first discusses how Brazilian historiography treats this topic and emphases the importance of studying domestic slavery in rural areas. The second analyses the relations between slaves and masters inside the big houses taking as a example the Pau Grande plantation.
