ABSTRACT This paper examines India’s environmental policies and budget allocations from 2016–2024, revealing a focus on infrastructure that may overshadow environmental conservation. Significant discrepancies between policy rhetoric and budgetary commitments suggest that there is a need for realignment. Advocating an ‘environment-centric’ approach, the study calls for increased budgetary commitments to environmental protection, a strategic shift away from fossil fuels, and stringent regulatory oversight, all essential to ensure sustainable development in India.

ABSTRACT The authors report a cross-sectional study in Tamale, Ghana, using a stratified simple random sample of 270 households to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of households, in relation to the disposal of plastic waste. Data gathered using a structured questionnaire and in-depth interviews revealed that 48% of respondents had moderate-to-high levels of knowledge, 87% of respondents showed a negative attitude, and 46% performed poor practices in plastic waste disposal. There was a statistically significant association of education level and employment status of residents with plastic waste disposal. The knowledge, attitude, and practices of households were unsatisfactory though not significantly associated with plastic waste disposal. There is a need to use formal and informal education on waste management and improve access to affordable waste disposal services.

ABSTRACT The use of plastics since they were first mass produced in the 1940s has increased by over 250% owing to their versatility, high durability and low cost. Increased usage with irresponsible disposal and the high molecular weight of plastic that prevents quick and natural degradation has made this versatile material into an environmental hazard that is threatening life both on land and in the oceans. With estimates of more plastics in the ocean than the fish by 2050 under a business-as-usual scenario, marine plastic litter has begun to affect human sustenance. This paper aims to provide a review of the efforts to reduce plastic litter worldwide.

ABSTRACT This study examined occupational risks associated with waste picking and pickers well-being in Lagos, Nigeria. A convenience sampling technique was employed to select 152 landfill-waste pickers, and the respondent-driven sampling technique was used to select 53 street-waste pickers. We discovered that waste pickers were exposed to occupational health risks such as body pain, tiredness, twisted ankles, chest pain, and eye soreness. Non-use of personal protective equipment contributed to waste pickers’ susceptibility to occupational health risks. Most waste pickers were dissatisfied with their well-being connected to the unhealthy conditions in which they work, the extreme poverty they live in, and the stigmatisation they experience. The study concludes that waste pickers’ well-being is critical for effective solid waste management; hence, they should be considered adequately in policy design and implementation programs/strategies.

pollution has failed to make any significant impact on plastics pollution: several contributors have emphasised the complexity and, commonly, the invisibility of the issue. The final chapter, Redressing the Faustian bargains of plastic economies, argues for a legally binding international treaty on plastics pollution comparable to the Montreal Protocol on CFCs and other ozone-depleting chemicals, focusing on the full life cycle of plastics from extraction to recovery. That would be a good start.

A flock of terns

Sir, It’s blowing an easterly gale down Beach Road, whipping up sand, from aspiring dunes in gutters, unswept for days. Once on the beach, stinging sand, keeps away, early morning striders. So, I have the whole place to myself! When I approach the intertidal fence to the bird sanctuary, alarmed, a sudden flock of terns, takes off from the mud flats at the Lourens river’s estuary, into the wind. Fifty plus give aloft, from a standing start, (joined by some Hartlaub’s gulls) in perfect unison, an aerial display, second to none. In unerring formation, they split into two groups and spiral up, then peel left and right, bank, dive, swoop and spread, split again, half peeling right, half, left. They combine, soar, advance, and just before they reach me, split again, bank right and left, circle inwards, cross paths, wingtip to wingtip, almost touching, in perfect formation. Enthralled, I cheer! Then there’s a victory swoop and a perfect landing, yonder, at the water’s edge; in the ripples. The gulls, equally enthralled, copy the flight perfectly; breathless, but beaming.
