Since non-singular signals and random signals have different modulus maxima spread characterizations in the wavelet transform, the maxima corresponding to noise are removed and the original signal can be reconstructed. Thus we derive the correlation template from the denoised signal, and the accurate position of echo in strong noise environments is detected by correlation analysis. Therefore, the depth of the oil well between the ground and oil surface is obtained. A comparison is given between the correlation signal that used wavelet analysis and the one that did not, from which we can see the superiority of wavelet analysis.

A new method of radar target recognition is presented. Aircraft number for a radar target is recognized by IF radar echoes. For a received IF echo signal, the complex envelope of the signal is obtained by the FFT and spectrum shift, and its autocorrelation matrix is computed. The feature vector is the eigenvalue of the autocorrelation matrix. Also, using a method based on subspace division, precise reference templates are built.

This paper discusses the problem of array calibration. Using cyclic statistics, the sensor gain and phase can be different for each signal. Our method is applied to both narrowband and broadband signals.

A high-speed multi-channel data acquisition and processing system for coherent radar is introduced in this paper. The system can sample the radar intermediate frequency signal, video signal or I, Q signal at a sampling frequency up to 200 MHz, it can analyze and process sampled data in real time. The system is composed of high-speed multi-channel data acquisition equipment, a high-speed parallel processor, radar grating display system and a microcomputer. The technical features of the system include: the use of a coherent sampling technique and the sampling frequency up to 200 MHz can meet the requirements of various types of radar signal processing and radar target recognition. The high-speed parallel processor is designed in a block structure, so that the programming interconnection structure of its signal processing boards can be determined by the host microcomputer, which may meet the needs of various parallel recognition algorithms. FPGA ICs are adopted in the radar grating display system to implement the glow display of radar echoes on the grating monitor so that the sampled targets can be observed clearly and its position can be determined conveniently by an operator on the grating monitor. The system can be properly used in sampling, storing and processing coherent radar target echoes. By cooperating with associated software, it can be used as a radar target recognition system.

Measurement of pupil diameter and the rate of pupil diameter fluctuation have been found to be a possible determinant of measures of physiological vigilance. This paper reviews an initial study of an imaging method for pupillometric analysis. The pupil parameter determination is based on a dynamic threshold approach, which accurately segments the pupil from the retina. A video camera is used to capture the pupil while the patient is attending to a vigilance task. The accuracy of pupil radii and area measurements were found to be of the order of 5%. Examples of several images and results are given in the paper. The pupillometric imaging technique will subsequently be extended to evaluate its sensitivity to measures of fluctuating arousal amongst normal sleepy individuals and subjects suffering from a sleep disorder, narcolepsy.

A digital limiter/compressor/expander/noise gate with variable parameters for audio signals is presented. This is a feedforward side-chain system which uses a minimum gain method for selecting the section and generating the control gain and a first-order IIR filter for the attack and release processings. The static and dynamic characteristics are analysed, the function block diagram and the realization techniques are described. The device has been real-time implemented using Motorola DSP56002.

We use the head-related transfer functions (HRTF) made available to the public by Gardner and Martin of MIT Media Laboratory. Our objective is to refine the HRTF so as to exaggerate the perceptual differences for the sounds coming from different directions, and emphasize the pinnae effects. With the refined HRTF, we demonstrate reduced front-back reversal rates.

In this paper, we describe an approach for finding character information in a scene image and estimating the camera viewing direction relative to the found character board. First, character candidates are extracted as subregions with high spatial frequency and large variance of grey-level. Next, we select characters using several heuristics for characters and character arrangements. Furthermore, by calculating the coordinate value of the vanishing point of two parallel signboard edges in a scene image, the relative orientation of the camera to the signboard can be estimated from the single view, which is useful for repositioning the robot and capturing a new image with less distortion of characters. Experimental results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The rapid growth in wireless communications has pushed semiconductor manufacturers to seek low cost, highly integrated and multi-standard designs for wireless handsets due to the current marketing situation i.e. the existing different air interfaces of wireless systems. This paper will focus on the description of: 1) Different kinds of multi-standard DSP based transceiver architectures including the analog mixing function, 2) The advantages and a technical overview of the different kinds of multi-standard transceiver and, 3) Describe the new architecture: single conversion band pass sampling DSP based multi-standard receiver. The paper also looks at the different standards and focuses on a high level design example of a new receiver architecture for this multi-standard specification such as GSM, DCS1800, DECT, PHS, FHSS-DCT and FHSS-WLAN.

This paper focuses on the design of an adaptive lossless compression algorithm for audio waveforms, which aims to be used in Internet, PC game, library archive applications, etc. Windows based software is developed which can also be used in DOS or UNIX operating system. The lossless compression is based on the Rice code (Rice and Plant, 1971), and a scheme to adaptively select a best set of Rice code parameters to enhance the compression ratio is proposed. In order to obtain a higher compression ratio, an adaptive linear predictor is employed. Our software achieved a slightly higher compression ratio than a known commercial Windows based package and is compatible with another more efficient DOS based package.
