Firstly, a fuzzy associative memory pattern classifier (FAMPC) based on fuzzy set maps and the generation method of fuzzy rules is presented. Secondly, a fuzzy neural network is developed to realize the classifier based on fuzzy-neural hybrid system theories. Finally, the advantages of FAMPC are shown with an experiment by comparing it with the conventional method. The results show that FAMPC can obtain satisfactory recognition performance.

This paper presents an accurate estimation formula for the minimum filter length of optimum (the minimax criterion-based) FIR low-pass digital filters. The authors have proposed an accurate estimation formula for the particular case that the passband and stopband ripples are identical. Now we expand the formula for the general case. The accuracy of the proposed formula is evaluated in comparison with that of the conventional formulae. We also describe how to apply the proposed formula for the design of other types of filters.

We present a random sampling and voting approach for the estimation of two-dimensional planar motion of a planar object moving in a plane parallel to the camera image plane. Since we are using random sampling, the correspondences between points in two different image frames are not required. However, the point correspondences can be determined after the planar motion is computed.

A new algorithm for effectively removing impulsive noise in digital images is proposed. Our computationally efficient algorithm first classifies corrupted pixels and then performs median filtering only for them. We introduce new efficiency factors to compare the performance of the noise detection algorithms. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than the existing methods in terms of both objective and subjective evaluations.

This paper, on the basis of the connection weights of robust binary feedforward neural networks (robust BNNs) being -1, 0 or +1, points out that the extraction of logic rules from robust BNNs is much easier than that from ordinary feedforward neural networks. It also puts forward the point that robust BNNs are a perfect unification of a logic knowledge database, an inference machine and an interpretation machine.

ATM is one of the most important techniques for next-generation communication networks. There are some new demands on a speech codec in ATM networks. This paper proposes a new scheme of speech compression that has variable bit rates for speech communication over ATM networks. Based on a new defined parameter named distribution entropy, we classify input speech into three different types and use wavelet filters to split input signals. Subband speech is then coded by VQ. The optimal length of analysis frame and parameters of our codec in the ATM environment are also discussed.

Most natural object pictures have fractal characteristics. This paper deals with a new approach for smoothing an enlarged image based on fractal geometry. The case study shows that the enlarged image quality using this new approach is much better than the conventional method.

Signal processing in non-Gaussian noise environments has attracted much attention recently, due to the poor performance of conventional systems based on the Gaussian assumption. The Middleton class B model has been shown in the literature as an appropriate model to describe certain non-Gaussian interference phenomena. However, its use is often limited because the probability density function has a very complicated form. We derive a mixture representation for the Middleton class B model where the density function is expressed as a weighted sum of chi-distributions with positive and monotonically decreasing coefficients. Therefore, the user can chose a finite linear combination of these simple distributions to approximate the Middleton class B density function to any desirable accuracy. The results presented help to extend the applicability of the Middleton class B model in practice.

This paper describes the use of genetic algorithms as feature selectors in a texture classification system. This is part of a system developed within a research project concerning the classification of genuine texture. An attempt is made to underline why an automatic feature selector is a useful part of the texture classification system. Furthermore a way of including the genetic algorithms into the system and the necessary feedback structure is explained.
