Universities in Hong Kong implemented a new 4-year undergraduate curriculum in 2012, and many initiated academic advising programs to help students from different academic backgrounds and with various levels of preparedness to review their options and manage challenges in college. For this study, we administered a questionnaire survey to discover students' views on and expectations for academic advising. The results show an overall positive evaluation of academic advising from students, who expected academic advisors to help them understand their study options and preferred a developmental over a prescriptive approach. Students reported that discussing career issues was their greatest need for academic advising.

We examined the lived experiences of male undergraduates on the campus of a high-research-activity university in the northeastern United States. Interviews with 8 male undergraduates with a grade-point average lower than 2.0 revealed that their poor academic performances resulted from a combination of the following experiences: a disconnect between high school and university academic expectations, adherence to rigid male gender roles, an inability to set priorities and engage with faculty and staff, and the manifestation of mental health issues. We implemented the study as a front-end analysis to understand better these learners and their learning contexts. Recommendations for advising intervention are offered.

Frequency of First-Year Student Interactions With Advisors 一年级学生与导师互动的频率
Pub Date : 2017-11-22 DOI: 10.12930/NACADA-15-048

Although acknowledged that academic advising helps students adjust to and deal with the challenges of college, little is known about students' frequency of interactions with advisors. Using data from 52,546 full-time, first-year students at 209 diverse institutions, we examined the frequency with which students met with academic advisors and the way these interactions vary by student and institutional characteristics. We found that the typical first-year student met with an advisor 1 to 3 times during his or her first college year; however, the number of meetings varied across student subpopulations and institutional types.

Think about It: Philosophy and Dialogic Advising. 思考它:哲学和对话建议。
Pub Date : 2017-11-22 DOI: 10.12930/NACADA-15-045
A. L. Colgan
Effective advising requires practitioners to engage in analysis of theory and practice. Philosophical underpinnings regarding notions of self can shape the advising encounter and determine the level of receptiveness of advisors toward the whole student. A brief review of Western philosophies of the self provides context for Martin Buber's radical dialogic philosophy of the self. Buber offered a foundation for an overarching theory of advising and addressed the selection and timing of particular advising methods in response to students. His idea of the dialogic self, I-You, consists of powerful, relational encounters with the other. Advisors bring an openness to students' contextual reality so an advisor is immersed in a student's world for that moment by applying dialogic advising.
