Pub Date : 2016-09-28 DOI: 10.12930/NACADA-15-026A
J. Vianden
To affect college retention, academic advisors should act as agents of student relationship management by strengthening the connection between students and their institutions. Satisfaction and dissatisfaction with academic advising as perceived by 29 college students at 3 midwestern comprehensive institutions are described. Discussion is framed in the context of student relationship management theory and the critical incident technique. Recommendations for academic advising practice are offered.

Advising Doctoral Students in Education Programs
Pub Date : 2016-09-28 DOI: 10.12930/NACADA-15-013

Because almost one half of students enrolled in American doctoral programs do not complete their degrees, the factors that lead to doctoral student attrition need to be identified. Research suggests that the nature of the advisor–advisee relationship contributes to the persistence levels of doctoral students. In this study, we conducted a content analysis of institutional documents related to advising in two types of doctoral programs in education. Using data collected from a purposeful sample from universities, we analyzed policies, procedures, and expectations related to doctoral student advising. The findings lead to important implications for clarifying roles of advisors and expectations for graduate student advising.

Developing Competency-Based Advising Practices in Response to Paradigm Shifts in Higher Education.
Pub Date : 2016-09-28 DOI: 10.12930/NACADA-15-033
Giovanna E. Walters
Competency-based programs have gained prominence in recent years for two primary reasons. First, more students are seeking ways to apply nonclassroom learning experiences toward a degree. Second, a paradigm shift in higher education encourages postsecondary curriculum developers to accept nonclassroom experiences as demonstrations of skills and competencies and to adapt curriculum to include these experiences. Educators must realize that the traditional classroom learning necessary to earn credits toward graduation must also apply to life outside academe and must reflect student experiences. Like educators in the classroom, advisors must respond to this change in perspective through inquiry-based practices and democratic relationships with students.

International Student–Athlete Adjustment Issues: Advising Recommendations for Effective Transitions
Pub Date : 2015-11-01 DOI: 10.12930/NACADA-14-015
Emily M. Newell
Through an extensive literature review, student–athlete college transition issues as well as concerns of international student-athletes are identified. Research on general student advising, developmental advising, and mentoring literature points to successful tactics for assisting domestic students, international students, and student-athletes through the transition to college life. This review culminates in a table that combines findings from previous studies into a set of suggested practices for academic advisors working with international student-athletes. Advisors can use this research to support international student-athletes during recruitment and throughout their collegiate career.

Strengthen the Bond: Relationships Between Academic Advising Quality and Undergraduate Student Loyalty
Pub Date : 2015-11-01 DOI: 10.12930/NACADA-15-026
J. Vianden, P. Barlow
Extant research suggests that student loyalty, a strong bond between the student and university, positively affects important student outcomes, most notably retention. In this article, we advance the notion that academic advisors should become managers of the student–university relationship. We examine the correlation between respondents' perceived quality of academic advising and their loyalty to the university as measured by our recently developed Student University Loyalty Instrument, administered to 1,207 undergraduates at three comprehensive midwestern institutions. Results suggest that a positive relationship exists between the perceived quality of academic advising and student loyalty, other meaningful indicators of the student–university relationship, and specific student demographic characteristics. Recommendations for academic advising practice are shared.
