The paper discusses the issues associated with the segregation of the radiation safety and RW management systems. It highlights the need for further upgrading of regulations and methodological provisions establishing the rules for waste categorization as radioactive as it comes to the lists of radionuclides and the numerical values involved; radioactive waste categorization as non-removable waste, identification of the potential hazard periods, selection of decommissioning strategies with the focus placed on the priority radionuclides. The study demonstrates that considering all spent nuclear fuel reprocessing scenarios no alternative can be proposed to the deep radioactive waste disposal option.

The article considers a wide range of problems associated with the management of radioactively contaminated soils (RCS). It presents and analyzes the main research milestones, as well as modern approaches, in particular, those addressing the nuclear legacy decommissioning stage involving the cleanup of relevant nuclear sites. The paper describes the subject area dealing with RCS. It presents the developed requirements for the implementation of a process flowchart providing RCS management considering an "ideal" facility. The paper also considers the recommendations on the development of a high-performance operational flowchart.

Federal State Unitary Enterprise RADON has considerable experience in the implementation of the soil modification process at surface-type storage facilities. The modification process involves modifying solution injection performed under pressure through a system of process wells into the rocks of the border zone. Upon penetrating into the rocks, the solution interacts with them reducing their hydraulic permeability, which eliminates the risk of radionuclide release into the environment and increases the efficiency of the natural barrier. The report presents the results of an overview discussing available soil modification methods, evaluates laboratory and pilot-industrial research and recommendations on the selection of a promising modifier for the modification of border zones around storage facilities operated at FSUE RADON’s industrial site.

The article presents the results of a survey carried out at a storage facility for intermediate- and high-level waste established during the operation of MP and RFT research reactors at the site of the Russian Research Center Kurchatov Institute. Relevant survey methods were selected based on the personnel safety requirements for measurements, permissible individual and collective annual exposure of personnel and the population, standards for contaminated environmental objects. All RW containers held in the storage cells were certified and handled properly to ship them from the site of the RRC Kurchatov Institute. The decommissioning designs for this storage facility will be developed based on the data obtained.

The paper considers the basic strategy for further R&D focused on the development of engineered safety barrier system (EBS). It places particular emphasis on materials and structure of the buffer layer with relevant research implemented under the Comprehensive R&D Program aimed at demonstrating the long-term safety of RW disposal in a deep disposal facility (DGR) and optimization of the repository performance indicators. The paper identifies the key areas for the required R&D. It notes that a comprehensive research program will result in some numerical characteristics necessary to provide a mathematical description of the processes occurring in the EBS at operational and post-closure stages. They may be also applied to adjust the developed models narrowing down the scope of work at subsequent stages and optimizing further research plan required for EBS design development.
