High level decontamination is seen as a method providing the reprocessing of ion-exchange resins: they are treated with specifically selected solutions to achieve high degree of radionuclide elution. In 2021, Research Manufacturing Technological Bureau Onega launched an experimental study aimed at reducing the activity of spent ion-exchange resins unloaded from ships undergoing maintenance. Under the study, a few experiments were performed to select appropriate regenerating solutions, optimal methods for spent ion-exchange resin processing and treatment of regenerating solutions on sorbents of NZрS and TsMPA types. Based on the study, a method was proposed with an appropriate processing flowchart developed to manage spent ion-exchange resins at the ship repair site Zvezdochka.

Assessment of personnel exposure from various operations performed inside radioactive waste (RW) storage facilities is seen as an essential task under the safety assessment of such storage facilities. However, radiation scattered from the structures inside the premises of RW storage facilities is often not taken into account in the assessment of personnel exposure doses. Characteristics of the radiation field from RW containers have been calculated under a few studies. For example, the radiation fields were calculated based on some engineering approaches and the Monte Carlo method using specialized software. This paper focuses on the Monte Carlo calculations of the gamma radiation dose rate from a volumetric cylindrical source located in a RW storage facility. The study evaluates the contributions of scattered radiation from the walls, floor and ceiling of a storage premise to the absorbed dose also considering the case of a flooded floor. The paper compares the calculated radiation dose rates with those evaluated by integrating the source volume for axisymmetric geometries with no account taken of scattered radiation. The calculations show that depending on the distance from the source if no scattered radiation from all the wall, floor and ceiling structures of a storage facility is accounted for, the dose rate may be underestimated by up to two times.

The paper discusses methodological approaches providing experimental evaluation of coefficients presenting radionuclide distribution on clay materials. Based on the implemented approach, sorption properties of samples differing in their composition may be compared under unified conditions (simulating actual conditions at radioactive waste storage facilities, if necessary).

The article evaluates the efforts implemented by the Russian Federation on fulfilling the obligations arising from the Joint Convention undertaken since its ratification and their main results. It overviews the drivers that prompted the development of the Joint Convention, its goals and scope. The article also provides some suggestions seeking to improve the effectiveness of mechanisms for the selection of a best practice recently proposed under the Joint Convention.

The article presents the results of experiments on the interaction of model phosphate waste form materials of various phase compositions containing simulators of RW elements with leaching solutions simulating groundwater and changes in its composition due to the impact produced by bentonite barrier material, radiolysis and alkaline plume from Portland cement concrete at temperatures of 25, 90 and 120°С under static water mode considered typical for deep RW disposal facilities. It provides numerical data on the equilibrium saturation concentrations of leaching solutions saturated with barrier and waste form components and simulators of RW elements during phosphate waste form leaching. The paper also discusses the degree of influence produced by the main leaching factors (the phase waste form composition, elevated temperature, the consequences of radiolysis and groundwater interaction with barrier and structural materials) on the concentrations of elements in RW phosphate waste form leachates under the disposal conditions.

The paper discusses the comprehensive measures implemented to ensure the uniformity of measurements as regards the RW characteristics demonstrating their compliance with waste acceptance criteria for disposal. Under this framework, the following regulations have been developed by JSC VNIINM: the Unified Industry Guidelines for the Measurements of Radiation Waste Characteristics, standard measurement and test procedures, as well as the standard of the State Corporation Rosatom for monitoring physical and chemical property indicators and characteristics of the RW form.
