There are an increasing number of systems for various applications that require highly dependable operation, often in safety critical applications. One of the latest areas to experience significant growth in this requirement is the automobile. As electronics continues to become a larger part of the design of a new vehicle, systems are performing many more functions under the control of microprocessors and consequently mechanical and hydraulic systems are being replaced by 'by-wire' configurations of sensors, microprocessors and actuators.

In this paper, we propose a fast cell search algorithm compatible with the standard cell search algorithm of the WCDMA system The proposed algorithm can acquire the synchronization of slot and frame times, and the code group identification using only one synchronization channel while the standard algorithm employs two synchronization channels called P-SCH and S-SCH. The proposed synchronization channel structure is the same as the P-SCH structure of the WCDMA system. However, the P-SCH is modulated with a specific polarization code, which is one element of new code group codes. The proposed algorithm can reduce both the BS transmission power and the complexity of the receiver as compared with the conventional one since only one synchronization channel is used. It is shown through computer simulation that the proposed algorithm yields a significant improvement in terms of cell search time compared with the standard especially in low SNR environments.

This paper focuses on power amplifier dimensioning applied to WCDMA wireless networks. First a modeling of the downlink capacity is given which allows determination of the relationship between the signal to interference ratio and required downlink power per user. In the second part, following a similar methodology to those presented in Sipila et al. (2000) and Hiltunen et al. (2000), an average approach to estimate the total Node B output power according to design and capacity requirements is presented This method is based on assumptions, which could differ from real network situations. Therefore in a third part, the difference between the previous average approach and extended simulations is studied in different cases: mobiles are randomly drawn in the cell and parameters such as orthogonality and frequency reuse factor are not constant. It is shown that Node B power, at the Node B antenna connector, determined by the average approach is not enough to guarantee desired capacity. This comparison leads us to define margins, which are mandatory to ensure the capacity with the required quality of service (QoS).

The paper looks at performance evaluation of a Local Multipoint Distribution Service (LMDS) system extended to support mobile users. The N-state Markov chain is used to model the LMDS wireless channel with Nakagami fading. Realistic traffic models of file transfer protocol (FTP), voice sources, and real video traces are used. Discussion of the numerical simulation results is presented.

The Multimedia Integrated network by Radio Access Innovation (MIRAI) architecture was proposed by the Communications Research Laboratory in Japan in Spring 2001. At the same time a basic access network (BAN) was proposed as a common access network dedicated to signaling in the MIRAI. This paper focuses on the signaling such as paging, packet filtering, and wireless system discovery as essential functions of the BAN and presents a signaling example and advantages of the BAN.

Characterizing the traffic generated by common user applications could prove useful in the design of mechanisms for medium access, admission control, etc. As an example, centralized algorithms that use knowledge of traffic patterns to schedule transmission of stations in access networks could be developed efficiently utilize network resources. Traffic characterization can be done in two steps. In the first step the applications that use network resources are identified, as well as the percentage of time they are active. The second step describes the traffic generation pattern of an active application. In this work we analyze network traces generated by four Internet game applications in order to characterize their traffic generation pattern. This characterization is achieved by obtaining a statistical description of different parameters associated with a traffic model. The model is shown to be robust, that is, the parameters of the model can be characterized using the same probability distributions independent of the application. It is shown that the gamma and uniform distributions can be used to characterize the random parameters of the model. Observed values of the parameter moments are presented.

In this paper, we study the performance of the OFDM receiver using FFT based on the log number system (Log-FFT) in a wireless environment. By using the log number system (LNS), complex multiplications of the FFT are reduced to simple additions. The effect of finite bit precision on the receiver performance is analyzed theoretically under the AWGN channel. Simulation results for both AWGN and fading channels are presented. It is shown that the bit width requirement of the receiver is quite small. In a coded OFDM system, there is no degradation in bit error rate performance when only two fractional bits are used for the LNS under a slow fading channel. The size of the look-up tables are small and the complexity of the log-FFT implementation is simple. Thus log-FFT is an attractive implementation method for the OFDM receiver design in wireless environment.

Due to the increasing interest in mobile multimedia applications requiring high bandwidths, channel models need to be derived which represent properly broadband mobile radio channels. Previously defined models, e.g. for GSM by COST 207, are not verified for systems having such large bandwidths. In contrast, the presented new propagation models have been derived based on broadband measurements, taken by a channel sounder applied to a DVB-T network, and on the WSSUS theory, which is well known and adaptable to existing narrowband simulation systems.

This paper proposes a soft-iterative multiuser receiver of low complexity, based on the principle of turbo decoding. A serially concatenated system is used, where every user employs a convolutional code, interleaver, space-time block code (STBC) and the spreading operation. The proposed receiver uses a soft-input soft-output (SISO) multiuser detector-decoder, which is basically a soft interference canceller for the space-time coded wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) signal. In each iteration, extrinsic information is interchanged between the different SISO blocks giving asymptotically unbiased estimates. The introduction of STBC adds decorrelation between the different user signals, relaxing the interleaver design and less iterations are needed for the system to converge. The receiver allows the use of a less complex soft matched filter instead of a minimum mean square error (MMSE) filter. It achieves nearly single-user performance, and gives an excellent trade-off between implementation complexity and performance for advanced WCDMA multiuser receivers.

This paper relies on a characteristic function based approach to compute the level crossing rate and average outage duration of interference-limited wireless communication systems. The analytical results are quite general and are applicable to systems in which users are subject to nonidentically distributed Rician fading. These results are confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations and some numerical examples are discussed and interpreted.
