An impulse noise detection method for decision-based or switching filters is presented, which uses one-dimensional Laplacian operators. Fuzzy logic has been used to further improve the performance of the proposed detector. Extensive simulations show that the proposed methods provide better performance than the existing techniques. The non-fuzzy method also has the advantage of computational simplicity.

This paper provides several research results about a technique of high quality telephony over LAN. Firstly, the value of the technique is discussed. Secondly, the delay performance of Ethernet LAN is tested by experiments both for the network layer and the application layer. Thirdly, a software architecture orientated to a real-time process like speech communication is proposed against the major reason of the overall transmission delay. Finally, as a conclusion, the possibility of realizing high quality telephony over LAN is demonstrated.

This investigation proposes a possibility to synthesise a true 3D sound field over loudspeakers. A new approach concerning the distance coding is presented. We tried to combine the benefits of using both the wave field synthesis (WFS) approach and higher order ambisonics (HOA). Therefore the proposed system can be divided into two main parts. Firstly the determination of the driving functions of the sound sources using a derivative of the WFS approach. Secondly the coding for transmission and/or storage whereby the scheme is based on the ambisonics approach using higher orders. The paper is organised in four sections. The first section gives a brief introduction about the WFS and the HOA approaches. In the second section the derivation of the driving functions is presented and the coding scheme of the derived source signals is explained. Results are given irk section three. Finally the paper is concluded and further possible research directions are identified.

The paper presents a novel clustering algorithm supervised by statistical tests. It deals simultaneously with three key data analysis problems: cluster tendency; cluster analysis; cluster validity. It provides an effective tool to analyze the validity and reasonableness of unsupervised pattern classification, especially in the case of a large number of samples. The experimental result illustrates its effectiveness.

Combination methods of neural networks and fuzzy logic are briefly surveyed. Then, a novel combination model is presented for synthetic integration of rainfall. The presented model is composed of four network layers: input layer, membership function construction layer, inference layer and defuzzification layer. The combination model is applied to synthetic integration of forecasted rainfall data produced by gradual regression method, periodic analysis plus multi-layer method and model output statistics method. The model is trained by short-term rainfall data of Zhejiang Province from 1980 to 1997. The synthetic integration (forecast) results from 1998 to 2000 show that the presented model can obtain satisfactory forecast performance.

A new method for recognizing the start and the end of each word in a Chinese continuous sentence is discussed. We define a new recognition characteristic called periodic gradual change (PGC). A continuous speech sentence can be separated into many single words by a combination of the new method of PGC and other characteristics such as zero crossing rate (ZCR), instantaneous swing (E characteristic) and linear predictive coding (LPC) parameter. The recognition rate is improved for continuous speech segmentation by the new method.

To research the combined effect of noise and vibration on the articulation, changes of acoustic characteristics of Chinese single syllabic utterances were investigated under the combined factors. The experiment conditions combined noise and vibration, simple noise, simple vibration, and control. The results showed that, as compared with simple noise, simple vibration or control conditions, the fundamental frequency, energy, and duration of the articulation under the combined conditions increased significantly.

In this paper describes a method for adaptive, parameter-independent, on-line channels' weight estimation, based on entropy in the output probabilities from ANN classifiers, rather than the noise level or SNR estimation. A recursive formula for channel combination calculation, based on the approximation of all possible channels combination, is deduced. The proposed method has been used to develop a multi-channel distributed speech recognition (DSR) system. From experiments a conclusion can be drawn that the use of the proposed method results in an absolute system accuracy improvement of 12.4% in comparison with the base one-channel DSR system from the ETSI Aurora Project.

Gabor function and log Gabor function are compared in this paper. The log Gabor wavelet is developed and its performance is analyzed. Compared with Gabor wavelet, the excellent performance of log Gabor wavelet is shown. Finally, log Gabor wavelet is applied to image edge detection, and it is shown that using log Gabor wavelet can not only improve the detection property, but also save about half the computational load compared with Gabor wavelet, in the case of similar detection effect.
