Scientific analyses were carried out to determine the effect of ozone formation based on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at the central area of Seoul from October 17 to November 11 in 2021 during Satellite Integrated Joint monitoring of Air Quality (SIJAQ 2021) campaign. VOCs including formaldehyde (HCHO) can be emitted by biogenic, primary emission, and secondary formation in urban areas. In this study, HCHO were collected using a 4-hr integrated sequence sampler equipped absorption tubes including 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH). Liquid Chromatography/Quadruple Time Of Flight (LC/QTOF) was utilized to determine the quantitative analysis of HCHO. As a result, overall average of HCHO is presented as 7.4 ppb, which is about 2.4 times higher than toluene concentrations. Strong diurnal pattern as in day-time maximum indicates that secondary HCHO is dominant. A quarter of measured ozone could be originated from HCHO from ozone formation potential model. The current result can be applied to reduction strategies for ozone and verification of satellite HCHO monitoring.

This study evaluated the characteristics of PM2.5 pollution and long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) at the Baengnyeong and Jeju Air Quality Research Centers in South Korea during 2018~2020. The mean concentration of PM2.5 was constant in Baengnyeong but decreased in Jeju owing to COVID-19. The significant seasonal variations of OC, EC, and NO3- in Baengnyeong and Jeju with the highest concentrations in winter may be due to the influence of high PM2.5 episodes. Meanwhile, the concentrations of SO42- and NH4+ were constant throughout the year in Baengnyeong, resulting from regional inflow from surrounding areas. The influence of anthropogenic sources and secondary formation of PM2.5 increased in summer and decreased in autumn at both sites, which was also observed at other background sites. The dominance of NO3-, K+, and Cl- in Baengnyeong was due to the influence of combustion sources and LRAT. The source of SO42-, NH4+, V, and Ni in Jeju was identified as industrial activities with the highest contribution in summer. The secondary formation of PM2.5 with external inflow effects was dominant in Baengnyeong and Jeju. The main emission source area of PM2.5 for both Baengnyeong and Jeju was East China (Hebei, Shandong, Jangsu, and Anhui), but the chemical composition and sources of PM2.5 were different between Baengnyeong and Jeju. The result of this study can be a basis for future monitoring and modeling studies on the influence of LRAT in background areas. © 2022, Journal of Korean Society for Atmospheric Environment.

Characteristics of Air Quality Measurements during the 2018 Intensive Observation Period in Gangneung Port

Despite the importance of air pollution emissions in port areas, traditional air quality monitoring has mainly been carried out in populated areas or industrial complexes. However, air pollutants emitted in port areas also make an important contribution to local air quality. Therefore, the particle number concentrations and NO 2 concentrations were measured using the optical particle counter (OPC) and the gas detector during the air quality intensive observation period from October 11 to November 1, 2018 at Gangneung Port (37.76°N, 128.954°E). The averaged particle number concentrations increased mainly under land breeze conditions rather than sea breeze wind, and the contribution of pollutants originated from the surrounding area was greater than that from the coastal ocean. The hourly change in NO 2 concentrations showed a relatively high correlation with air temperature and ship operation frequency. Diurnal change of NO 2 concentration also followed the photochemical reaction cycle according to the change of insolation. Overall, the particle number concentrations and NO 2 concentrations measured at Gangneung Port were largely influenced by the local emissions and weather system. Additional research will be able to provide information on air quality changes and impacts in the port area.
