Dissolved gas-in-oil analysis (DGA) is one of the most useful methods to detect transformer incipient faults. Among the diverse conventional DGA methods, IEC three-ratio method is widely used, but in many cases this method can not accurately diagnose(such as no matching, multiple faults). This paper proposes a fuzzy three-ratio method; it is considered that the drawbacks of the conventional three-ratio method lie in: when the ratio crosses the coding boundary, codes change sharply, but in reality the boundary should be fuzzied. Based on this assumption, this paper first propose the fuzzy membership functions for codes "zero", "one", "two", then it transfer the conventional logic "AND" and "OR" used in IEC three-ratio method into fuzzy logic and put forward the diagnosing steps of this method. Simulation proves the proposed method can overcome the drawbacks of the conventional three-ratio method that can not diagnose multi-fault and no matching codes for diagnosis, thus, it greatly enhanced diagnosing accuracy

In this paper, a new application of time frequency distribution algorithm (TFD) is introduced for analyzing subsynchronous resonance (SSR). A computation algorithm is derived to utilize the information obtained from TFD for detecting of subsynchronous modes. Three different study systems with different network configuration and different series compensation arrangements are used to measure the effectiveness of TFD and the computation algorithm in detecting network eigenvalues. Comparison between the results obtained from TFD computation algorithm and from the mathematical model is presented for each study system

This paper presents the effective use of a unified power flow controller (UPFC) and its characteristics in a computational approach. To demonstrate the flexibility of UPFC in controlling line flow transmission, a 5-bus network system is developed with line(s) congestion and operated as per-normal flow to identify the cause of line congestion and also possible solutions in mitigating the congestion with UPFC, effectively. The programs used in this study are power world simulator (PWS) and power system analysis toolbox (PSAT). The use of PSAT is reported and discussed along with its requirements of operation and its newly developed features. The embedment of UPFC in PSAT using Matlab as platform applicator to solve line congestion in steady-state condition is also explained. The use of UPFC in network planning of rural electrification is proposed at the end of the paper

Based on GPS technology and differential equations, two new methods of live line measurement of the parameters of transmission lines with mutual inductance are proposed. The principles and mathematical models of the steady differential method and the transient differential method are explained in details. Data processing algorithm by least square method is introduced in the measurement. The hardware structure of the measuring system and digital simulation results are given. Finally, an example of live line measuring 500 kV transmission lines with mutual inductances in Northeast China power network is given. Comparison of results among the steady differential method, the transient differential equation method and the conventional method is also shown. The field measurement results prove that the new methods can meet the needs of live line parameter measurement of transmission lines

The under going rapid world wide deregulation of electricity market leading to more competition, increased volatility in energy prices and exposing participants to potentially much greater risks. Along with the market deregulation, a primary derivative market has been established, within the derivative market, long and short term futures and options are being traded. The purpose of establishing the financial market is to facilitate the electricity utilities to hedge the risks. The major concern now on the market development is how efficient the market is. To the market participants, it will be hard for them to determine the operating strategy without realizing the market efficiency level. The paper emphasizes the issue of testing market efficiency, discussing the unique characteristics of electricity prices series and how to choose the proper efficiency testing model. Augmented Dickey-Fuller test on stationary for Australia real spot market prices and future contracts prices series and rational expectations model for market efficiency test have been conducted

Multi-layered feed-forward artificial neural network (ANN) trained by back-propagation algorithm is used to solve the problem of combined economic and emission dispatch in this paper. The system of generation associates thermal generators and emission involves oxides of nitrogen only. Equality constraints on power balance as well as inequality constraints on generation capacity limits of the generators and transmission loss are also considered. The idea is to minimize total fuel cost of the system and control emission. The problem is first optimized by Lagrange multiplier technique and the result is used to train the ANN wherein tuning parameters eta & alpha are altered to check their effect on convergence rate. The trained ANN is then used to generate test data. It is found that the convergence characteristic of the algorithm is excellent and the results achieved by the proposed method are quite accurate and faster in comparison to the conventional method

This paper describes an innovative approach of co-optimizing the energy and ancillary services markets in the Australian National Electricity Market. A heuristic based technique called horizon scan is applied as the optimization procedure to find optimal solution for the problem. Horizon scan is a heuristic based technique to search for optimal solution in a non-linear solution space. The performance of horizon scan in optimizing the energy market has been reported in a separate paper. The paper also includes several case studies depicting simplified market models. Optimal schedules resulting in economical dispatch costs are obtained when horizon scan is applied to optimize trading between multi-regions with inter-connectors. Linear and non-linear constraint equations are also included in the model to take into account dynamics of the power system

The simulation system is realized based on real-time simulation and control technique by MATLAB and data acquisition card, the cage induction motors and power electronics converters with relative control strategies are adopted for basic control. The control strategies, including field oriented control and synchronous current PI control, are described in detail. In order to test the simulation system, a 30 W prototype is built. The simulation and experimental results indicate that the simulation system is valid, and provides a good reference for the realization of future large power simulation system

This paper deals with voltage stability phenomena in a large interconnected grid like Indian grid. The main purpose of work presented here is to study the effects of different controllers like generator field current limiter and under load tap changing transformer on voltage stability of major load area of this large grid. For the analysis of voltage stability of a system, dynamic simulation of entire power system is required which is dealt in detail in this paper. For the large interconnected grid all power system components are modeled in detail in SIMULINK toolbox of MATLAB platform. Critical buses from two major load area are simulated for voltage stability and the bus voltages and nearby generators field currents plots are presented here
