remained about double the national standard of lake class Concentrations of stable and radioactive carbon isotopes of organic matter were determined for suspended solids in surface water from the shallow and semi-closed Lake Kiba, Japan during June 2014 – March 2016. Particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations were 0.44–5.01 mg L -1 , and δ 13 C and ∆ 14 C values were, respectively, –30.3 to –22.8 ‰ and –156 to –33 ‰. The organic matter in suspended solid samples consistently showed depleted 14 C, with an average ∆ 14 C value of –81 ± 37‰. The carbon isotopes showed seasonal variation, being higher in summer, and with a positive correlation to POC contents. These results suggest that the POC characteristics are controlled by a mixture of two endmembers, organic matter produced by phytoplankton activity within the lake and the watershed organic matter, under a shallow and semi-closed environment.

After the Fukushima nuclear accident, the public acceptance of nuclear energy use has become more severe than ever. The public’s concern stems not only from the worry over the safety of nuclear power plants (NPPs) but also from that over the management of high level radioactive waste (HLW). In order to alleviate the public’s concern over the management of HLW, transmutation of long-lived radioactive nuclides can be an effective measure from the viewpoint of reducing the life, heat and toxicity of HLW. The three systems of fast reactor (FR), accelerator-driven system (ADS) and molten salt reactor (MSR) are compared in terms of the efficiency of transmutation of HLW or minor actinide (MA) waste, the main component of HLW.

in the marine environment after the accident, for the first time, we determined Pu isotope ratio ( 240 Pu/ 239 Pu) in addition to 239+240 Pu activity in seawater collected in the near coastal area (mostly within the 30 km zone) off the FDNPP site. The 239+240 Pu activities were 4.16-5.52 mBq/m 3 and the 240 Pu/ 239 Pu atom ratios varied from 0.221 to 0.295. These values were compared with the baseline data for Pu distribution in the near coast seawaters before the FDNPP accident (2008-2010). The results suggested that there is no significant Pu contamination in seawater in the near coastal area off the FDNPP site from the accident two years after the accident.
