This study investigated whether female aesthetic athletes (a subset of athletes including dancers, gymnasts, figure skaters) who recall receiving critical comments about their weight/shape report poorer wellbeing compared to those who do not. Female aesthetic athletes (N= 381) completed measures assessing psychological wellbeing (self-esteem, anxiety), disordered eating and compulsive exercise behaviours/attitudes. Participants who recalled receiving a critical comment about their weight/ shape (N= 251) reported higher levels of disordered eating, compulsive exercise, and anxiety, and lower levels of self-esteem. Greater awareness is needed of the potential negative impact that such critical comments may have on athlete wellbeing.

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that can have life-long implications; however, the term ‘concussion’ is typically viewed as less severe than ‘mild traumatic brain injury’. Sports-related concussion is receiving increased attention from UK Parliament and media; earlier research and in-game protocols addressed single concussive incidents, now attention is shifting towards the consequences of multiple subconcussive events such as repeated ball heading. Other considerations are sex-based differences in symptomology and recovery, as well as the implications of children participating in contact sports. Further research, implementation of policy and protocols, and improved public understanding of concussion are required.

A disunity seems to exist between psychology and psychiatry, stemming from their distinct theoretical backgrounds, with a notable disconnect in how to approach and treat severe mental health conditions. This reflective piece will seek to discuss and attempt to answer the questions – is there room for psychology and psychiatry to grow by addressing their disunity? And consequently, can more be done for those with these more severe mental illnesses by mirroring the efforts and advancements of clinical psychology for those with more ‘low intensity’ mental health conditions?

There has recently been a promising increase in focus on co-production and participatory methodologies, with the views of patients and their families becoming an integral part of service development. People with lived experience of mental health difficulties also enter the mental health profession across a range of roles. Drawing upon personal reflections and recent literature, this discussion piece considers several topics relevant to professionals with lived experience including perspectives and experiences of stigma, self-awareness, self-disclosure and ethical practice. Implementing onward policies and strategies to address the barriers faced by mental health professionals with lived experience and promote a more inclusive working environment is essential.

The focus on mental health has increased since the pandemic began. The idea of self-care has been placed on top of any and every hierarchical structure, encouraging people to embrace certain factors of stability. This article is a reflective piece exploring the struggle of a graduate psychologist in finding job opportunities to provide support to others, and how an education in psychology can contribute to the practice of self-care. It further reflects on feelings of self-doubt and the sense of putting theory into practice by showing gratitude to one’s surroundings.

Clinical supervision is a professional activity, facilitated through a collaborative process between supervisor and supervisee. Our supervision group, of one supervising clinical psychologist, a co-supervising trainee clinical psychologist, and five assistant psychologists, kept reflective journals on weekly online supervision sessions during the first Covid-19 lockdown. Group members’ reflections were combined, and several themes identified through an iterative process: Significance and Purpose of Supervision, Managing Online Distractions, Negotiating Communication, The Impact on Connection and Advantages of Technology. We aimed to capture the transition to online supervision and discuss themes and learning points from the reflections, which can be applied when adapting to online supervision.

In theory, we as psychologists know that mental health does not make someone weak, it does not make someone incompetent. Yet in practice, we often challenge these ideas with fears of disclosure, stemming from a cognitive dissonance between being a patient and practitioner of psychology. But how do such issues arise? And how can we as psychologists address this? This article is a reflection on navigating the world of postgraduate mental health from both sides of the fence.
