Comparative Study of the Opinions and Beliefs of Undergraduate Students in Nigeria and the United States toward Family Size 尼日利亚和美国大学生对家庭规模的看法和信念的比较研究

Abstract Previous studies have indicated that fertility tends to be inversely related to level of education. Thus the author hypothesized that there would be no difference between the undergraduates of a Nigerian university and those at an American university with regards to opinions on family size. This null hypothesis was found to be untrue; Nigerian students, both male and female, preferred large families when compared to their U.S. counterparts.

Russian Influenza in Two University Communities 两个大学社区的俄罗斯流感

Abstract The H1N1 influenza A virus (A/USSR/90/77) appeared first in China, then spread to the United States in January 1978, causing significant outbreaks of influenza among younger age groups. Because college students were particularly affected, epidemiologic investigations were done to define the impact of illness on university populations. We describe influenza outbreaks involving two college campuses (the Universities of Michigan and Colorado). At both schools, illness attack rates were significantly higher for students than for older faculty and staff members. At the two respective campuses, 25 and 36% of those ill who were surveyed sought medical care. Bed confinement averaged 3.8 days at one school (Michigan). At the other school (Colorado), ill students missed an average of 2.8 days of class. Influenza A (H1N1) virus was isolated from specimens from acutely ill students at both campuses. These investigations illustrate the practical usefulness of college campuses as sites for monitoring the activ...

Some Correlates of Emotional Well-Being Among New England College Students 新英格兰大学生情绪幸福感的相关因素

Abstract In a questionnaire survey of New England college students, a large number of undergraduate men and women reported problems related to their personal, social, or academic adjustment. Given a list of 22 items described as “common concerns or feelings experienced by college students,” respondents were asked to rate the extent to which each item had been a problem for them in the past year. Most students (86%) reported having very much or somewhat of a problem with one or more items on the list. Pressure to do well in school, problems with weight control, anxiety, poor concentration and depression were among the most commonly reported concerns. The prevalence of these self-reported concerns and problems was found to be significantly associated with the respondents' sex, their perceptions of their health status, and academic standing.

Abstract A pilot project designed to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of a health-related employee assistance program was implemented at the University of South Carolina. One hundred interested participants were randomly selected from university faculty and administrative staff. The project utilized the following methods: 1) psychophysical tests including health risk appraisals, health knowledge levels, physical activity assessments, psychological batteries of tests, and biophysical data obtained through a treadmill stress test, percent body fat, blood analysis, blood pressure, and pulmonary function; 2) individual health consultants who served to inform, model, and encourage participants to practice healthful behaviors; 3) group programs related to self-care/wellness promotion techniques; 4) mass media contact to repeat and reinforce healthful behaviors; 5) wellness-oriented social activities, such as fun runs, meatless covered dish dinners, etc. Results of the project included statistically sign...
