Control components are a vital aspect of any industrial process. It is argued that costly shutdowns can be minimized or eliminated through a complete understanding of the control devices along with a conscientious maintenance program and troubleshooting procedure. The electromechanical design of various types of starters, contactors, and overload relays are analyzed in terms of operation, application maintenance and troubleshooting. Specific suggestions for troubleshooting procedures are offered for various problem scenarios.<>

In recent years, the employees of a major American pulp and paper manufacturer have begun to notice a marked change in the company's style of management. The changes have occurred since the company formerly part of a closely held stock corporation based in the United Kingdom, broke away from the parent organization and formed a separate US stock corporation. The changes also coincide, however, with a general rise in employee empowerment in American industry and with a burgeoning global marketplace. The results of a survey of the causes and effects of the changes in management styles are discussed. The goal of the survey was to determine whether the changes are a result of differences between American management styles and British management styles, a result of the general trend in American management styles, or some combination of the two.<>

The impact of current regulations, both international and domestic, on the cost and availability of halon fire protection is discussed. Continuing adequate fire protection in control rooms requires changes in the method previously used to design and use halon systems. Programs undertaken to keep using the current halon agents, including design changes, modification of the NFPA standards and initiation of halon recycling, are described. The new extinguishing agents coming to market that provide additional options for the fire protection professional are also described. It is argued that the combination of halon initiatives and new agent development will allow ample time for conversion of existing halon systems to the next generation of fire protection technology.<>

The need for higher levels of motor efficiency is increasing significantly. Numerous opportunities are available to reach these levels, many of which are being influenced by changes in government regulations, rebate programs and industry standards. The opportunities available to achieve higher performance levels, the activities that are driving these higher levels and the impact of adjustable frequency drives are discussed. Future required performance levels and the method of demonstrating compliances are summarized. The relationship and tradeoffs between efficiency and power factor are addressed.<>

The implementation of an adaptive controller using an orthogonal function space to represent the plant transfer function is described. This approach for modeling continuous functions is similar to the common Fourier series orthogonal function set used to approximate periodic functions. It is shown that the use of orthogonal filters permits rapid transfer function identification with a minimum of prior process information while maintaining robust control under a wide range of operating conditions. The mathematical model, the development of a computer algorithm, and the results of several applications at industrial sites are presented. The basics of proportional-integral-derivative control and adaptive control are reviewed.<>

The use of flexible fiber optic cables on high-speed log handling cranes in the pulp and paper industry is described. On these machines, the fiber optic technology provides a noise free communication link for the control system and enables clear video signal transmission from the crane's legs through the festoon system to the drivers cabin to support the crane operators for safe truck unloading. A basic description of fiber optic transmission systems and an overview of the types of fiber constructions available are presented.<>

Two different ways of regulating the paper web tension in an off-machine coater, by using either a tension controller with load cells, or a position controller using dancer rolls, are compared. The two systems are analyzed from the regulation point of view: system stability and response times. The stability and response analysis was performed on a computer model using data from an offline coating machine. The machine is equipped with both systems and can be run with either tension or position control. Practical results based on measurements made on-site included.<>

Integrated action graphics and integrated performance views, two concepts for simplifying a user's ability to evaluate a greater number of design options for large industrial facilities and for providing an enhanced understanding of the transient and steady state performance of power systems, are described. The traditional power system study, the traditional user-program interface, and the limitations of each are discussed. It is suggested that power engineers familiar with conventional system study techniques will readily adapt to the interactive-graphical method of analysis with minimum effort. Operating and plant engineers may find the technique invaluable in the study of system disturbances, for increasing operational efficiency, and for better preparing operators for critical emergencies. The advanced mathematical techniques used in this program make it an effective tool for the study of large power systems on a personal computer.<>

A method of assigning monetary value to induction motor design features and operating and maintenance practices is presented. The economic model can be implemented on a standard personal computer spreadsheet program and can be easily duplicated. The method is used to make better engineering decisions and communicate the reason to others. It is shown that assigning economic value to life expectancy enhancements along with the traditional first cost and energy consumption life costs enables the engineer to quantify quality. Present worth and probability theory are reviewed to assist in understanding the presentation.<>
