In this paper, a new disc-type ultrasonic motor is introduced. Its stator is a circular disc with a bonded PZT plate serving as a driver. The rotor is driven by a lateral elliptical motion occurring at the stator edge. An analytical formulation of the lateral elliptic motion based on the wave equations is derived to show the operation principles. The driving frequency, the force and the revolution speed induced from the lateral elliptic motion are obtained following the analytical derivation. The relationship between the new disc-type ultrasonic stator and its boundary condition is discussed. A laser vibrometer is used to verify the analytical model. The result proves that the stator with three non-equal-triangular fixed points (120deg-90deg-150deg) near the edge achieve the best performance.

A wiring machine, driven by a brushless DC motor (BLDCM), is designed and implemented applying integration considerations of mechatronics system for a successful prototype development and described in this paper. Stable speed response during wiring operation with variations of load conditions could be achieved by making use of the portion shift of the overall system design efforts for this wiring machine. Features of its mechanical structure and mechanism of the developed wiring machine both can obviously lower the firmware requirements and level down sophisticated control algorithms, hence it is applicable to realize design concept and control methodology in two 8-bit data processing chips of PIC18F4431 and PIC18F8720. Description based on design issues of this wiring machine is also arranged for showing feasibility of the presented concept and its realization approach herein. Meanwhile, it demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed simple control strategy for the low-cost high performance wiring machine system.

Carbon nanotubes have attracted great attention as future electronic and mechanical materials. However, manipulating techniques are not well developed yet. We propose to use electrostatic drop-on-demand devices to eject micro-droplets of micelle-suspended single walled carbon nanotubes. A simple electrostatic force analysis and photographic studies of droplet ejection process are presented. The analysis shows that semiconducting species have higher electrostatic force density. However, the enrichment of specific electronic types is not clear at large size droplets produced in this study. A micro-scale jetting device is being produced to prove the suggested behavior.

A compliant microgripper system is designed, fabricated, and tested. The gripper mechanism is optimized to achieve design objectives. By employing excimer-laser ablation, a polyurethane microgripper is fabricated. The input-output behavior of microgripper mechanism is analyzed by FEA and compared with experimental testing. The microgripper driven by piezoelectric actuator is finally integrated and the operational behavior is identified. The application of holding and transporting a wire (200 mum) is finally tested.

Most of the vehicle directional dynamics analysis has been carried out based on a linearized model and the assumption of constant forward speed. However, the nonlinearities found in the vehicle dynamical system can give rise to a variety of phenomena such as instabilities and bifurcation that escape detection during standard linear analysis. In this paper, a nonlinear vehicle model was developed based on the concept of Lagrange equations of motion. The assumption of constant forward speed is considered, as a constraint to define the driving force, which in turn is reduced to a study of nonlinear zero dynamics. The equilibrium surface (manifold) is constructed and used to identify bifurcation points of the nonlinear vehicle model in terms of two parameters: speed and steering angle. As illustrated in a numerical example, this strategy has been successfully used to analyze the nonlinear behavior of vehicle planar motion.

This paper proposes an intelligent aircraft automatic landing controller that uses fuzzy-neural controller with particle swarm optimization to improve the performance of conventional automatic landing system. Control gains are selected by a parameter searching method called particle swarm theory. Comparisons on different control schemes are given. Simulation results show that the proposed automatic landing controller can successfully expand the safety envelope of an aircraft to include severe wind disturbance environments without using the conventional gain scheduling technique.

In this dissertation, a multi-functional optical biochip system was presented. This biosensor is developed by integrating ellipsometry and SPR detection techniques, which adopted a paraboloidal mirror and a spherical mirror to vary the incident angle, a LCD phase modulator to control incident light beam retardance, a reference optical path to calculate the phase modulated by LCD, and a flow-injection system to drive bio-samples to biochip. The other important function of this biosensor is to observe SPR phenomenon by using the ellipsometric configuration. By using this method, the SPR resolution could be significantly enhanced, and the characteristics of ellipsometry give detailed information for bio-tech analysis. Information such as film thickness, physical parameters, concentration, mass, density, kinetic constants, binding specificity, etc. can all be retrieved. This biosensor was named ESPR which is an acronym of Ellipsometry-SPR. In summary, ESPR could serve both as a research and development tool as well as a manufacturing tool in biomedical area.

The identification of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) complex systems using frequency response data has received much attention from control engineers all over the world. Magnetic bearing, as an example of a highly nonlinear, unstable and multivariable system, demands extensive research studies in control and identification. This paper focuses on identifying a magnetic bearing system using plant frequency response data. Subspace system identification methods developed using Laguerre network and an instrumental variable method in the frequency domain were used to identify a MIMO continuous time transfer function for a test-stand magnetic bearing apparatus. Simulation studies based on the experimental data show that a continuous time multivariable model was successfully identified.

The automation of fiber-optic alignment is the most challenging among fiber-optic packaging issues and therefore is a critical manufacturing technology for reducing its cost. Because of its advantages of fast convergence and easy-implementation, this paper studies the feasibility of applying a modified simplex method to fiber-to-optic alignment process on a real fiber-optic alignment machine. A series of experiments were conducted for the alignment of a single mode fiber coupled with laser diode. The performance of the alignment process using this method is investigated, and the relevant problems are discussed. Through these experiments, an optimal initial simplex size is found to guarantee a successful alignment for all initial positions and a satisfactory convergence speed.
