A comparative economic evaluation of bucking deciduous trees: A Case study of Oriental beech ( Fagus orientalis ) stands in Northeastern Turkey Abstract: The optimum bucking method assists loggers to determine optimum bucking combinations that maximized total economic value of harvested trees. Several previous studies investigated performance of optimum bucking method on coniferous trees in Turkish forestry. In this study, economic gain of using optimum bucking method was evaluated in deciduous forest of Oriental beech ( Fagus orientalis ) trees in northeastern region of Turkey. Network 2000 program was used to run optimum bucking method in a sample application. The findings of sample bucking application in Giresun Forest Regional Directorate were deemed to represent the optimum bucking data in nearby regional directorates (Artvin and Trabzon). Then, the economic gain of using optimum bucking method in producing Oriental beech ( Fagus orientalis ) was estimated for whole northeastern region of Turkey. The capability of optimum bucking method was evaluated by comparing study results with the results from traditional bucking method. The results indicated that optimum bucking application using Network 2000 program increased, although statistically not significant, the average economic value of harvested deciduous trees by 14.37%, comparing with traditional method, mainly relying on loggers’ experiences. The overall economic contribution of using optimum bucking in producing Oriental beech ( Fagus orientalis ) logs was estimated as 2,686,182.93 Turkish Lira (TL). A Perspective on various alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) application areas Abstract: Alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) is a common sizing agent, which is suitable for any kind of cellulose and its derivatives. To control of the penetration of liquids from paper surface is important by terms of printability and protecting the products from liquids. AKD sizing applications are becoming increasingly important in parallel with technologic development of industrial applications. It is necessary to examine the present state of the paper industry and the traditional practices in order to successful sizing. Pulp and paper industry, still major practitioner of the AKD, has the proper experience about AKD production and application. Besides that, there is growing interest about AKD applications certain area of engineering. This review is a brief outline showing experiments on AKD from researchers. Assessment of desertification hazard in Abu-Ghoveyr Plain, Dehloran, Ilam Province of Iran Abstract: The present study aims to evaluate the desertification hazard and determine the effective criteria affecting desertification in Abu-Ghoveyr Plain in Ilam Province, using the 9 criteria Iranian Model of Desertification Potential Assessment (IMDPA). To this end, first, work units maps (geomorphologic facies) were created using slope, geology, and land use maps. Using this method, work units were considered as the main unit of desertification and a map was generated for each index according to assigned weights, such that the qualitative map of the desired criteria were obtained using the geometric mean of indicators. Then, through integration and determining the geometric mean of layers obtained from criteria and finally classification of the obtained maps, map of the current status of desertification in the studied area was prepared. The obtained results indicated that 31.67% of the area was in the medium class of desertification (II) and 68.33% belonged to the intense class (III). The assessment of management practices on rangelands exploitation using state and transition model in central arid regions of Iran Abstract : Rangeland management in arid and semi-arid regions requires comprehensive attention to ecological processes and consider the interrelationship of those processes. Considering discard the theory of climax and rangeland succession model in recent years especially in arid regions and shrub lands, the new theory known as the state and transition model is taken into consideration by natural sciences and environmental specialistsb in the world. In present study, state and transition model and its application in rangeland management will be discussed and wil be peresented a case study of Iran for more description. As a case study, Nir rangelands of Yazd province will be introduced. In this rangeland, both status of enclose and grazing livestock evaluated and grazing livestock has been introduced as threshold of these two conditions. Rangelands of arid regions are biologically fragile and in the case of little degradation, a long time will be needed for compensation. The definition of different situations, thresholds, transitions and indicators will help managers to follow change trend among different plant communities and establish an ideal community. But due to very slow and very small changes in arid regions rangelands, use of models in these areas is not possible. Keywords: Model, state and transition, Nir of Yazd, threshold, arid region. Ozellikle kurak bolgelerde, klimaks ve mera suksesyon modelinin terkedilmeye baslanmasi ile beraber, devlet ve gecis modeli olarak bilinen yeni bir teori son yillarda doga bilimleri ile ugrasan uzmanlar tarafindan uygulanmaya baslamistir. Bu calismada, devlet ve gecis modelini konu alan mera yonetimi uygulamasi ele alinacak ve daha fazla aciklama icin Iran'in Yazd eyaletinde bulunan Nir meralarinda yapilan bir ornek calisma sunulacaktir. Kurak bolgelerde yer alan meralar biyolojik olarak hassas ve kirilgandirlar, dolayisiyla bozulmalari durumunda, toparlanmalari icin uzun bir sure gerekli olacaktir. Meralarda olusacak gecisler ve degisimler yardimiyla yoneticiler farkli bitki topluluklari arasinda degisim trendini takip ederek ideal bir bitki toplumu kurabilmektedirler.
