Effect of Body Weight in Growing Period on Laying Performance of Korean Native Chicken Breeders 生长期体重对韩国地方种鸡产蛋性能的影响

This study was to investigate the relationship between chick weight in the growing period and the laying performance of Korean native chicken (KNC) breeders. We measured the body weights of 1,384 KNC breeders at 1-140 days of age at two-week intervals. The age at first egg laying, hen-day and hen-housed egg production, and the egg weights were investigated. Correlation coefficients between the body weight and egg production traits were analyzed. The results showed that the correlation coefficients between body weight and age at first egg laying were significantly positive before 4 weeks, but negative after 8 weeks of age. The correlation coefficients between body weight and egg production rate were estimated to be negative before 8 weeks and positive after 12 weeks of age. Coefficients of hen-day and hen-housed egg production were similar. There was little correlation between body weight and egg weight at 32 weeks of age, whereas a low positive correlation was with egg weight at 50 weeks. In conclusion, there was little correlation between body weight and laying performance before 8 weeks of age, whereas a significant positive correlation was with body weight after 12 weeks. The results suggest that as the chick's weight increases in the late growing stage, sexual maturity is faster, the egg production rate is higher, and the egg weight increases. Therefore, the weight management of KNC female breeders is very important in the late growing stage, and the body weight of chicks must be maintained above the standard weight.

Effect of Feral Peach Sugar Extracts and Gomchwi Extracts on Physicochemical Properties and Shelf-Life of Woorimatdag Chicken Marinated with Red Pepper Sauce 野桃糖提取物和枸杞提取物对红椒汁腌制乌里马达鸡理化性质和保质期的影响

This study was designed to evaluate the effects of feral peach ( Prunus persica Batsch var. davidiana Max.) sugar extracts (peach extracts) and Gomchwi ( Ligularia fischeri ) extracts on physicochemical properties of Woorimatdag 1 breast marinated with red pepper sauce during cold storage for 18 days. Experimental groups were divided into five groups; CON: marinated breast with basic red pepper sauce, GP15 and GP30: added with 15% and 30% of peach extracts into CON, respectively, GG5 and GG10: added with 5% and 10% of Gomchwi extracts into CON, respectively. Moisture and fat contents of GP30 were lower than those of CON, GG5, and GG10 ( P <0.05). Cholesterol content of GP15 was similar to that of CON, while it was lower than the other treatments. GP15 and GP30 showed significantly lower pH than the others. Especially, GP30 showed significantly lower total aerobic bacteria count than other treatment on day 10. During storage, peach and Gomchwi extracts were not significantly effect on meat shear force. Overall acceptability of GP15 was higher than that of GG10 at day 10 and 15 ( P <0.05). These results indicated that the treatment of peach extracts has a tendency to improve the storage stability maintaining the sensory preference of marinated Woorimatdag 1 breast compared to Gomchwi extracts. Further study would be needed to identify the specific flavor-enhancing factors of GP treatments.

Association between Paternal Telomere Length and Offspring Production Performance in Korean Native Chickens 韩国土鸡父系端粒长度与子代生产性能的关系

The effect of paternal telomere length on reproductive performance, relationship between paternal and offspring telomere length, and association between paternal telomere length and offspring production performance were investigated in Korean native chickens. Using 22 paternal chickens and 329 offspring, the paternal reproductive performance such as fertility, embryo mortality, and hatchability, as well as the offspring production performance such as survival rate, body weight, and weight gain were analyzed. Telomere length was analyzed through quantitative fluorescence in situ hybridization using lymphocytes. No significant differences were observed in fertility, embryo mortality, and hatchability between paternal chicken telomere lengths ( P<0.05 ). These results indicate that paternal telomere length had a weak negative correlation with fertility and embryonic death rate but a weak positive correlation with hatchability. The correlation coefficient between paternal telomere length and offspring survival rate was r=0.17 ( P>0.05 ). The group of offspring with long paternal telomeres showed relatively poor growth performance. Moreover, a significant negative correlation was estimated between paternal telomere length and offspring growth performance ( P<0.05 ). The correlation coefficient between paternal and offspring telomere lengths was r=0.075 ( P>0.05 ). In conclusion, there was a weak association between paternal telomere length and reproductive performance, offspring survival rate, and offspring telomere length, respectively. However, paternal telomere length and offspring growth performance showed a negative relationship. Such results could be due to the re-extension of telomere length by telomere reprogramming in the early embryonic stage and the different degree of telomere shortening between individuals with increasing age after birth.

The Link between Birds and Dinosaurs: Aves Evolved from Dinosaurs 鸟类和恐龙之间的联系:鸟类是从恐龙进化而来的

Aves including chickens are currently one of the most representative vertebrates on the planet. More than 10,000 bird species are distributed among various regions around the world. Dinosaurs, which evolved from archosaurs, were once assumed to have gone extinct during the Cretaceous-Paleozoic extinction period. Since the mid-1990s, abundant dinosaur fossils have been found in China and various other parts of the world. Research articles on phylogenetic, evolutionary, and genomic studies of fossil taxa show that birds are living theropod dinosaurs. This review describes the link between birds and dinosaurs based on studies of their skeletal structures, feathers, respiratory organs, chromosomes, and metabolism. Birds are the only theropod dinosaurs that survived the mass extinction 66 million years ago. Dinosaurs did not go extinct and we are still living in the age of the dinosaurs.

Effect of Photoperiod Considering Animal Welfare for Growth Ability and Blood Properties in Broiler Chicks 考虑动物福利的光周期对肉鸡生长能力和血液特性的影响

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of three different photoperiods on growth performance, blood properties, and stress indicators in broiler chicks between 1-7 days after hatching. Two hundred and fifty-two 1-day-old male broiler chicks (57.0±0.12 g) were divided into three treatments, with 4 replicates per treatment and 22 birds per replicate subjected to three different photoperiods of 24L, 22L/2D and 18L/6D. A light-emitting diode bulb served as the light source, with an illuminance of 30 lx. As an experimental diet, a commercial feed based on a corn-soybean meal, with 22% CP and 3,150 kcal/kg ME diet, and water were fed ad libitum . Body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and liver weight ratio showed a statistically significant difference between the 18L/6D and 24L treatments ( P <0.05), but with no significant difference between the 22L/2D treatment and either the 24L or 18L/6D treatment. The breast meat ratio was 5.59% in the 18L/6D treatment group, which was lower than that of other treatment groups ( P <0.05). The triglyceride levels were highest ( P <0.05) in the 18L/6D treatment among treatments, but alanine aminotransferase levels were significantly higher ( P <0.05) in the 22L/2D treatment than in the 24L treatment. Levels of cytokines, i.e., Interleukin-6 and Tumor Necrosis Factor- α did not show a significant difference among the treatments, but corticosterone content was significantly higher ( P <0.05) in the 24L treatment than in the 18L/6D treatment. In conclusion, 22 hours of lighting is appropriate between 1~7 days after hatching, considering growth performance and the overall health of broiler chicks.

The triglyceride levels were highest ( P <0.05) in the 18L/6D treatment among treatments, but alanine aminotransferase levels were significantly higher ( P <0.05) in the 22L/2D treatment than in the 24L treatment. Levels of cytokines, i.e., Interleukin-6 and Tumor Necrosis Factor- α did not show a significant difference among the treatments, but corticosterone content was significantly higher ( P <0.05) in the 24L treatment than in the 18L/6D treatment. Supplementation of Microalgae (Tetradesmus sp.) to Pre-Starter Diet for Broiler Chickens 微藻(Tetradesmus sp.)在肉仔鸡预开饲粮中的添加

This study aimed to determine the effects of dietary microalgae (Tetradesmus sp. (TO)) on intestinal immunity and microbiota of pre-starter broilers. One hundred and twenty 1-day-old birds (Ross 308) were allocated to two dietary treatment groups with six blocks in a randomized complete block design. The two experimental diets consisted of a corn-soybean meal-based basal diet and a diet with 0.5% TO powder instead of cornstarch in the basal diet. After feeding the experimental diets for ten days, all birds' body weight and feed intake were measured, and representative eight birds were selected from each treatment group. Small intestinal lamina propria cells were isolated using flow cytometry to examine the frequency of immune cells. Cecal feces were harvested for 16s rRNA gut microbiota analysis and fecal IgA levels. Here, we found that 0.5% TO supplementation increased CD3 + CD4 + T cells in the small intestine, but decreased CD3 + CD8 + T cells in the small intestine. Gut microbial analysis showed that TO supplementation significantly increased the alpha diversity of the gut microbiome. Taxonomic analysis showed that TO treatment increased the abundance of Firmicutes and decreased that of Bacteroidetes at the phylum level. The distribution of Enterobacteriaceae containing many harmful bacteria at the family level, was lower in the TO group. In the LEfSe analysis, the TO group had a significantly enriched abundance of Agathobaculum at the genus level. Overall, results show that Tetradesmus sp. supplementation influences intestinal T-cell immunity and induces the expansion of beneficial gut microbes in pre-starter broiler chickens.

In Vitro Antibacterial Effects of the Chimeric Peptides from Chicken and Pig Antimicrobial Peptide NK-Lysin 鸡和猪抗微生物肽nk -溶酶嵌合肽的体外抑菌作用

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) play an important role in innate immunity against pathogenic infections. AMPs exterminate pathogenic bacteria by disrupting cell membranes or inhibiting intracellular molecules. NK-2, first identified in pigs and derived from NK-lysin, has antimicrobial effects against bacteria and parasites. In this study, chimeric peptides (cpNK) of chicken and pig NK-2 and cpNK-derived peptides (cpNK-a1 and cpNK-a2) were synthesized, and their antimicrobial effects against various pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes , Staphylococcus aureus , and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) were investigated. The structure of chimeric peptides from chicken and pig NK-2, cpNK, include α -helix like NK-2 and peptide net charge was +9 like porcine NK-2. The cpNK peptide showed powerful bactericidal effects against most bacterial species, including MRSA, especially against gram-negative bacteria. Furthermore, cpNK-derived short peptides, cpNK-a1 and a2 also showed bactericidal activity, but the effects were weaker than those of cpNK. Therefore, we conclude that cpNK- and cpNK-derived short peptides have the potential to be used as antibiotic alternatives.

Correlation between Internal and External Egg Quality Indicators in the Early Phase of Hy-Line Brown Laying Hens 海兰褐蛋鸡早期蛋品内外指标的相关性研究

This study investigated correlations between egg quality indicators to identify external egg quality traits to predict internal egg quality using non-destructive and convenient measurements. Thirteen indicators, including Haugh unit, albumen height, eggshell breaking strength, eggshell thickness, eggshell color (CIE L * , CIE a * , CIE b * ), and reflectivity value, egg weight, egg length, egg width, shape index, and yolk color, were investigated. A total of 180 brown eggs were obtained from one 27-week-old flock of Hy-line brown-laying hens raised in a cage system. Correlations were evaluated using Pearson's correlation coefficient (r). The results showed strong correlations between Haugh unit and albumen height, eggshell color CIE L * and reflectivity, egg weight and width, egg weight and length, eggshell color CIE L * and CIE a * , eggshell color CIE a * and reflectivity, and shape index and egg length ( P <0.001). Moderate correlations were observed between eggshell breaking strength and eggshell thickness, eggshell color CIE a * and CIE b * , and shape index and egg width ( P <0.001). Eggshell color CIE L * was correlated with eggshell breaking strength ( P <0.01), and eggshell color CIE a * was correlated with Haugh unit, albumen height ( P <0.01), and eggshell breaking strength ( P <0.001). The present study showed significant correlations between eggshell color and other quality indicators. Effect of Culture Medium Containing Chicken Serum on Growth and Differentiation of QM7 Quail Muscle Cells 含鸡血清培养基对QM7鹌鹑肌细胞生长分化的影响

QM7 cell, a quail muscle cell line, has been used in various studies. In cell culture, it is well known that the culture medium has a significant influence on cell growth and maintenance of cell characteristics. This study aimed to adjust the culture medium to make it more suitable for QM7 muscle cells. A culture medium was prepared by adding 2% chicken serum (CS) instead of 10% tryptose phosphate broth (TPB) to the conventional culture medium. In the culture medium prepared with CS, the QM7 muscle cells changed from a pointed, thin to a broader shape. In addition, they grew and divided more rapidly in the new culture medium than in the conventional culture medium. The number of cells increased faster in the CS-containing culture medium from day two after passaging, and significantly increased from day three. The muscle cells grown in the medium containing CS maintained their undifferentiated state prior to differentiation. Myotubes formed well when the cells were maintained in CS-containing medium, resulting in a longer length and uniformity. According to the above results, it is clear that the culture of QM7 myocytes using a medium containing CS rather than TPB helps obtain better results in cell maintenance and differentiation.
