Effects of Probiotics on Antioxidant Biochemical Parameters and Antioxidant Enzymes in the Blood, Intestinal Mucosal Tissues and Liver of Broiler Chicks under High Ambient Temperature Conditions 高温条件下益生菌对肉仔鸡血液、肠黏膜组织和肝脏抗氧化生化参数及抗氧化酶的影响

Four-d-old broiler chicks were randomly assigned to 3 groups with 9 replicates (8 birds/cage) under high ambient temperature; birds fed a basal diet (CON), a basal diet supplemented with 0.25% of probiotic complex (LPB, 1 × 10 6 Lactobacillus plantarum , 1 × 10 6 Bacillus subtilis , and 1 × 10 6 Saccharomyces cerevisiae ) and 0.5% probiotic complex (HPB). Immediately after 28-d feeding trial, 6 birds having average body weight per group were sacrificed for evaluating the effects of probiotics on antioxidant parameters in the serum, intestine, and liver of birds. As results, serum biochemical parameters of nitrogen components including total protein, albumin, urea nitrogen, and glutathione were unaffected by dietary probiotics. In addition, serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities, and lipid peroxidation (MDA) were not changed by dietary probiotic supplement in birds. In the intestinal mucosa, SOD activity in the HPB group significantly ( P <0.05) increased compared with that in the CON and the LPB groups. Lipid peroxidation in the HPB group significantly ( P <0.05) decreased compared with that in the CON group. However, there was no statistical difference in GPX, and GST activities in the intestinal mucosa among treatment groups. In the liver, the activities of SOD, GPX, and GST, and the level of MDA were unaffected by probiotic supplement. In conclusion, 0.5% of probiotics significantly increased SOD activity and decreased lipid peroxidation in the intestinal mucosa, suggesting that probiotic complex could be potential to improve the small intestinal antioxidant capacity of bird under high ambient temperature conditions.

Overcoming Ethical Conflicts and Dilemmas in Farm Animal Welfare: Investigation of Correlation between Ethical Awareness Level and Compliance with Animal Welfare-Related Regulations in Korean Layer Farms 克服农场动物福利中的伦理冲突与困境:韩国养殖场伦理意识水平与遵守动物福利相关法规的相关性调查

Animal welfare was introduced relatively late to Korea in comparison with Western countries. Nonetheless, the Korean government has continuously improved animal welfare-friendly regulations as policy instruments. Given the current situation, it is predicted that spontaneous settlement of the animal welfare policies will be difficult and may cause conflict in the farm animal industry. To identify and categorize conflicts caused by animal-welfare-related policies in the last five years, we investigated the awareness of animal welfare among Korean hen farms and the level of compliance with the animal welfare regulations. We collected a sample of 53 egg-laying chicken farm operators (e.g., owners or head managers) was collected through the on-site survey (90% confidence level (Z-score: 1.65) and 10.18% tolerance, based on a number of 797 egg-laying farms in 2020). Ethical conflicts on the farms were categorized into three different types according to the hen farm's ethical awareness level: passive, moderate, and active. Additionally, we investigated the correlation between compliance with regulations and ethical consideration. This study confirmed that compliance with animal welfare-related regulations significantly correlated to the level of ethical consideration of farm operators. Interestingly, we also observed that farm operators did not comply with the regulation despite their high level of awareness of animal welfare. This conflict implies contradiction and unresolved ethical dilemmas. Therefore, this study argues that the policies cause conflict in the field despite the certain level of effectiveness on animal welfare regulations.

Effects of Crude Protein and Phytase in the Diet on Growth Performance and Excretion Contents of Nitrogen and Phosphorus in Broiler Chicks 饲粮中粗蛋白质和植酸酶对肉仔鸡生长性能和氮磷排泄含量的影响

This study was conducted to investigate the appropriate levels of crude protein (CP) and phytase in the diet of broiler chicks in order to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus contents in feces while maintaining performance of broilers. Six hundred forty-eight 1-day-old male broilers (41.9±0.91 g) had a total of 3 × 3 complex factor of 3 levels of CP (22%, 21%, 20%) and 3 levels of phytase (1,000, 800, 500 FTU/kg) in the diet. Divided into 9 treatments, 4 replications per treatment, 18 birds per replication, were completely randomly assigned and reared in a metabolic cage for 7 days. Seven-day-old body weight (BW) and body weight gain (BWG) of broilers were significantly lower at CP 20% treatment ( P <0.05), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) was significantly lower at CP 21% and phytase 800 FTU/kg treatment ( P <0.05). Nitrogen and phosphorus contents in chicken excreta were significantly lower in CP 20% and phytase 500 FTU/kg treatment, respectively ( P <0.05). Interactions between CP and phytase in the feed were shown for nitrogen and phosphorus in feces ( P <0.05). In conclusion, considering the broiler performance and excretion contents of nitrogen and phosphorus, it is thought that CP and phytase levels of broiler chicks diet can be reduced by 21% and 800 FTU/kg, respectively.

A Study on the Production Performance of Korean Native Chickens for amgye Chicken Production 韩国土鸡生产性能的研究

This study aimed to develop a high-productivity breed of Korean native Samgye chicken. We evaluated the production performance of six Korean native chicken combinations (KNC-SCYC, SCYD, SDYC, SDYD, SYYC, SYYD) and GSP-Hanhyup Korean native chickens, with Baeksemi chickens used as a control group. The performance test was conducted from hatching to 7 weeks of age on 756 chickens, and we measured survival rate, body weight, shank length, feed utility, and carcass yield. The overall survival rate was nearly 100% for all strains. However, body weight showed significant differences between strains at all ages ( P <0.01), with Baeksemi weighing 863.8±76.9 g, GSP-Hanhyup weighing 804.7±72.5 g, and KNC-combinations weighing 543.0±61.8 g at 5 weeks of age. The duration needed to reach 850 g was estimated to be 34.5 days for Baeksemi, 37.5 days for GSP-Hanhyup, and 45.8-48.8 days for KNC-combinations. Carcass yield percentage was highest for KNC-SYYD combination at 63.3%, followed by Baeksemi at 60.4%, and GSP-Hanhyup at 56.1%. Shank length at 850 g body weight was 7.6 cm for KNC-SYYD combination, 7.8 cm for Baeksemi, and 8.0 cm for GSP-Hanhyup. The feed conversion ratio at 850 g body weight was 1.81 for Baeksemi, 2.17 for GSP-Hanhyup, and 2.27 for KNC-SCYC combination. Our results suggest that the KNC-SYYD combination and GSP-Hanhyup breed have the potential to be used in Samgye production due to their moderate growth performance, higher carcass yield, and shorter shank length, despite their lower growth productivity and feed efficiency when compared to Baeksemi.

Farm Survey on Eggshell Quality and Egg Vitamin D3 Contents in Laying Hens Fed Vitamin D3-enriched Diets 饲粮添加维生素D3对蛋鸡蛋壳品质和鸡蛋维生素D3含量的影响

Vitamin D3 is an essential nutrient which plays an important role in calcium metabolism for eggshell formation, in calcium and phosphorus metabolism for bone mineralization, and in maintaining host immunity. Although there have been a great deal of studies investigating the role of vitamin D3 in eggshell quality and vitamin D3 contents in eggs, no attempts have been made to monitor the eggshell quality and vitamin D3 contents in eggs at farm level. Thus, this survey was conducted to measure eggshell quality and vitamin D3 contents in eggs laid from laying hens fed diets containing different levels of vitamin D3. Eggs from four commercial laying hen farms were sampled before and 1, 2, 3 and 5 weeks after provision of the vitamin D3-enriched diets added with the level of 16,500 IU and 29,000 IU. Dietary vitamin D3 did not affect the eggshell color and breaking strength, but increase the eggshell thickness. In addition, vitamin D3 contents in eggs were elevated as vitamin D3 in diets was increased. It is concluded that addition of dietary vitamin D3 into the diets of laying hens at the commercial laying hen farms could improve eggshell quality and vitamin D3 contents in eggs. It is expected that the prediction equation for egg vitamin D3 contents might be produced if more data on vitamin D3 contents in diets and eggs at the farms are to be analyzed.

Poultry By-Product Meal as a Potential Protein Source in Broiler Diets with Exogenous Protease Supplementation 添加外源蛋白酶的肉仔鸡饲粮中家禽副产物粕作为潜在蛋白质来源的研究

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of exogenous protease supplementation in diets formulated with poultry by-product meal on growth performance, small intestine magnitudes, and meat physiochemical characters in broiler chickens from 21 to 35 days post-hatch. A total of 120, one-day-old "Arbor Acres Plus" broiler chickens (male: female - 50:50) were allocated one of two dietary treatments to give six replicates and ten birds per cage. Two dietary treatments included a control diet (CON) and a diet supplemented with protease (CON+Pro). At day 35, body weight and feed intakes were measured to calculate the feed conversion ratio for the entire experiment period. Two birds from each pen were euthanized to measure the relative lengths and relative weights of three small intestine sections and meat samples were collected for physiochemical characteristic analyses at 35 days post-hatch. Exogenous protease supplementation did not influence ( P >0.05) growth performance but showed a tendency to improve FCR ( P =0.082). Protease supplementation showed a tendency to reduce proximal small intestine length ( P =0.091). Broilers offered dietary treatments influenced minced meat color where protease supplementation resulted in lower CIE b * ( P <0.001) colorimetric value for yellowness and showed a significant trend ( P =0.059) on reducing meat redness CIE a * . In conclusion, the addition of exogenous protease to a broiler diet formulated with poultry by-product meal did not affect the growth performance, small intestine magnitudes, and meat physiochemical parameters (except CIE b * ) in broiler chickens.

Correlation between Egg Breakage and Cumulative External Forces on Eggs during Egg Collection in Laying Hen Farms 蛋鸡场采蛋过程中鸡蛋破损与鸡蛋累积外力的相关性研究

This study was conducted to analyze the correlation between egg breakage rate and cumulative external forces on eggs during the egg transfer system in 12 commercial layers farms. The commercially available electronic egg device was used to detect the external forces on eggs during egg collection systems. In addition, egg breakage rate per farm was collected. It was found that the external force on eggs were greater in the order of washer and dryer connection part, conveyor connection part, transfer, sorter, collecting elevator, packer, egg transfer connection part, and egg tray. A positive relationship between the external forces on eggs during egg transit system and the incidence of cracked eggs per farm was noted. The external forces on eggs varied from 5G to 38G depending on the location and the egg breakage rate ranged from 3.2 to 14.5% per farm. Although efforts to produce eggs with high eggshell quality are considered important, extra care should be made to lower the external forces on eggs during the egg transfer system from laying house to egg packing center.

Effect of Combined Supplementation Catechin and Vitamin C on Growth Performance, Meat Quality, Blood Composition and Stress Responses of Broilers under High Temperature 复合添加儿茶素和维生素C对高温条件下肉仔鸡生长性能、肉品质、血液成分和应激反应的影响

The study was carried out to investigate the effects of dietary combined supplementation of antioxidants as catechin and vitamin C on growth performance, meat quality, blood profiles and stress responses of broilers exposed to high temperature. For this experiment, a total of 360 21-day-old male Ross 308 broilers were used. Treatments were assigned with 6 replicates per treatment and 10 birds per replicate in a 2 × 3 factorial design with vitamin C (0, 250 mg/kg) and catechin (0, 600, 1,200 mg/kg). The heat stress environment was maintained at temperature 32±1 ℃ and relative humidity 60±5% for 24 hours until the end of the experiment. The supplemented antioxidants had no significant difference in weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio ( P >0.05). The content of total cholesterol in blood had no interaction, but decrease ( P <0.01) in the supplemented catechin group. Also, the supplementation with catechin showed increase in the SOD activity of blood, and lower corticosterone and IgM levels of broilers. The contents of HSP70 and MDA in liver decrease ( P <0.05) with the supplementation of antioxidants, and HSP70 showed an interaction between groups. DPPH radical scavenging ability in breast meat increased ( P <0.01) in catechin, but meat quality did not show difference according to treatments. Respiratory rate decreased ( P <0.05) in catechin, but no interaction with vitamin C. In conclusion, the combination of vitamin C and catechin can alleviate stress under high temperature, such as HSP70 and MDA, but further study on the optimal supplemental level is needed.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of vitamin E and nanoparticle-sized vitamin E (NVE) in a broiler diet on growth performance, blood profiles, and meat quality. A total of 45 one-day-old Arbor Acres broilers (initial body weight of 37.00 ± 0.41 g) were used in this experiment for 28 days. All broilers were randomly allocated into three dietary treatments in a randomized complete block design. The dietary treatments were as follows: a basal diet (CON), a basal diet supplementing with 380 mg/kg of vitamin E (T1), and a basal diet supplementing with 380 mg/kg of NVE (T2). Each treatment had five replicates with three birds per cage. On days 0-7, the T1 and T2 groups significantly increased (P<0.05) body weight gain compared to the CON group. Also, the T1 and T2 groups significantly increased (P<0.05) vitamin E content in blood and breast meat compared to the CON group. In shearing force, the T2 group showed a lower tendency (P=0.070) than the CON group. The T1 group showed a higher tendency (P=0.086) in the b* (yellowness) value than the T2 group. On day 7 after the end of the experiment, the T2 group significantly decreased (P<0.05) TBA values compared to the CON group. In conclusion, supplementation with vitamin E or NVE can improve broiler growth performance in the starter period, reduce TBA value through the antioxidant action of vitamin E, prevent lipid oxidation, and improve shelf life. In shearing force, the T2 group showed a lower tendency (P=0.070) than the CON group. The T1 group showed a higher tendency (P=0.086) in the b* (yellowness) value than the T2 group. On day 7 after the end of the experiment, the T2 group significantly decreased (P<0.05) TBA values compared to the CON group. In conclusion, supplementation with vitamin E or NVE can improve broiler growth performance in the starter period, reduce TBA value through the antioxidant action of vitamin E, prevent lipid oxidation, and improve shelf life.
