Abstract Lecanora caledonica is described as new to science. Molecular analyses show that it belongs to the L. intumescens group. It is also rather similar in appearance to L. intumescens, but differs mainly chemically in containing only atranorin and an unknown UV+ ice blue substance. There are also anatomical and morphological differences to the other species of the group. The new species has a pronounced oceanic distribution and is so far known only from western Norway and Scotland.

Alan Orange, who died on the 5th February aged only 67, will be missed more than he would ever have guessed by members of the British Lichen Society and lichenologists across the globe. He was an outstanding naturalist and taxonomist who made detailed studies of difficult groups of organisms, from lichens and bryophytes to mites. His knowledge of sterile crusts and aquatic lichens was unrivalled. He investigated every aspect of his chosen organisms, from their morphology to their chemistry and genetics, in order to describe them taxonomically and to assess their relationships to other lichens. Alan was born in Leeds but soon afterwards the family moved to Longhope in the Forest of Dean, where his surroundings provided plenty of opportunities for botanical and other exploration, often with his cousins Heather, Margaret and Stephen, and the family’s dogs. Early on he developed his botanical skills and his taste for sorting out difficult groups of organisms, and his parents complained that his collection of brambles had taken over his bedroom! He also showed exceptional talent as an artist, producing detailed botanical drawings and sketches which he continued for the rest of his life. He was accepted for his first degree in Science at Bristol University and then for a master’s degree in Pure and Applied Plant Taxonomy at Reading University, which he completed with distinction. After graduating in the early 1980s, he worked as a field botanist based at the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology field centre at Newbridge-on-Wye, Powys. Tasked with undertaking botanical survey work on the upper reaches of the Rivers Wye, Usk, Severn and Teifi, this tall, immensely quiet but undoubtably talented character with hair below his waist rejected the proffered car to drive. Instead, a motorbike was acquired. As part of a very successful team, he helped lay the foundation for the science behind the statutory conservation of rivers and so began his own fascination with the hugely variable community of aquatic lichens. In 1977, while still an undergraduate, Alan was employed by the Nature Conservancy to survey the trees and flora in the permanent transects within Lady Park Wood in the Lower Wye Valley. The resulting records were so neat, thorough and accurate that they have been used as a basis for all subsequent recording. This, now possibly the largest and most enduring long-term study in Europe of how natural woodlands behave, would have been abandoned in its youth without Alan’s contribution. When he returned in 2014 to check the lichens for the Lady Park book (Peterken & Mountford 2017), he appeared to have no idea his work had been so significant. In 1986 he was appointed Curator of Lichens at the National Museum of Wales (NMW), now Amgueddfa Cymru-Museum Wales. His talent for illustration was quickly put to good use, producing a useful beginner’s guide to lichens on trees (Orange 1994). He held the post of curator until 2013 when he became

Abstract A novel lichen species occurring on rocks was collected from three different localities within Deosai National Park, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. Phylogenetic analyses of the nrDNA ITS and nuLSU regions revealed that it clustered within the genus Anamylopsora. Further chemical and morpho-anatomical analyses confirmed its uniqueness, and it is described here as a new species under the name A. pakistanica. The distinguishing characters are: an irregularly squamulose appressed thallus on rocks without rhizines; an epinecral layer up to 25 μm thick; ascospores that are hyaline, simple, thick-walled with a smooth surface; septate paraphyses with a pigmented apical cell in a gel-like matrix; globose to subglobose pycnidia with hyaline and bacilliform pycnidiospores. In particular, the species is distinguished from other members of the genus by morpho-anatomical features including the coloration of the thalli, the presence of a thick lower cortex (up to 100 μm), and the presence of simple, thick-walled ascospores. Specimens were found at altitudes up to 4587 m, the highest elevation yet reported for Anamylopsora. A key and comparison to all existing species of the genus Anamylopsora is also given.

Abstract The type species of Squamarina has two varieties, S. gypsacea var. gypsacea and S. gypsacea var. subcetrarioides. In this study, a phylogenetic and taxonomic analysis of these two varieties shows that S. var. subcetrarioides merits treatment as a species separate from S. gypsacea. Therefore, we raise this variety to species level as S. subcetrarioides (Zahlbr.) Y. Y. Zhang. Squamarina subcetrarioides is phylogenetically not closely related to S. gypsacea and differs from that species in the thallus forming rosettes when young, later becoming cracked and irregular in outline, and consisting of numerous small squamules.

Abstract A new lichen species, Lecanora zeorina Li J. Li & Printzen is described here from the south-west of China. Lecanora zeorina is characterized by its somewhat areolate-squamulose thallus, zeorine to lecanorine apothecia, an epihymenium without crystals around expanded paraphyses tips, an amphithecium with large calcium oxalate crystals and the production of atranorin. A new combination, Lecanora crystalliniformis (B.G. Lee & Hur) Li J. Li & Printzen, is based on Protoparmeliopsis crystalliniformis B.G. Lee & Hur, which was described as a new species from South Korea. Collections from China are almost identical in morphology and chemistry, and are phylogenetically closely related. Phylogenetic reconstructions based on ITS and mtSSU suggest that these two lecanoroid species belong in Lecanora s. str. where they form a sister group to sorediate species such as L. barkmaniana Aptroot & Herk and L. variolascens Nyl. Detailed descriptions, discussions, distributions and phylogenetic trees, based on multiple collections, are presented.

Phylogenetic reconstructions based on ITS and mtSSU suggest that these two lecanoroid species belong in Lecanora s. str. where they form a sister group to sorediate species such as L. barkmaniana Aptroot & Herk and L. variolascens Nyl. Detailed descriptions, discussions, distributions and phylogenetic trees, based on multiple collections, are presented.","PeriodicalId":18124,"journal":{"name":"Lichenologist","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2023-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42608774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Abstract This study re-examined the status of species of Diorygma Eshw. known from the Western Ghats using an integrative taxonomy approach that includes morphological and chemical data, as well as multigene phylogenetic analyses. Prior to this work, the two species D. karnatakense and D. dandeliense were distinguished primarily on lirellae morphology (branching pattern) and the number of ascospores per ascus. Our study of the morphology, chemistry and molecular phylogeny (mtSSU, LSU and RPB2) of freshly collected samples and re-examination of type material suggests that both names should be synonymized. Consequently, D. karnatakense is accepted as the correct name, with D. dandeliense as a newly proposed synonym. Phylogenetically, D. karnatakense is allied to D. antillarum and D. hieroglyphicum.
因此,D.karnatakense被认为是正确的名称,D.dandliense是一个新提出的同义词。

Abstract Microsatellite markers can provide valuable information about gene flow and population history. We developed and tested new microsatellites for the nitrophilic lichenized fungus Xanthoria parietina and studied its genetic diversity and structure within the urban area of Munich, Bavaria. We compared its local genetic pattern with that of its photobiont partner Trebouxia decolorans, for which existing microsatellites were applied. For comparison, a reference site with clean air was included in the sampling. We found support for three genetic clusters in the fungus X. parietina, which occurred intermingled in collecting sites. There was a high degree of admixture within fungal populations and individuals, and analysis of molecular variance revealed a lack of population structure in the mycobiont. The Trebouxia photobiont, in contrast, exhibited structured populations which grouped into two to five genetic clusters, and individuals showed less admixture than in the mycobiont. This indicates that the two lichen partners differ in their ability to move around in the landscape. The microsatellite markers we report are polymorphic and are suitable for population genetic studies.
