Benthic foraminifera picked out from the interval of 43.02~26.27 mbsf(meters below seafloor) of ODP 807(3°36.42′N,156°37.49′E,water depth 2 803.8 m,length 822.9 m)on the Ontong-Java Plateau, western Pacific was studied for understanding the changes in paleoproductivity and its relation with deep water circulation during the period of 2.5~1.6 MaBP.The benthic foraminifera accumulation rate(BFAR),Epifaunal/Infaunal ratio(E/I),percentage of Uvigerina spp.and total organic carbon(TOC%) were used as the proxies of paleoproductivity in this study. Results show that the change in paleoproductivity was generaly high in glacials but low in interglacials during the period of 2.5~1.6 MaBP.,except Bulimina alazanensis,of which the paleopruductivity was low in glacials but high in interglacials. It may suggest that B.alazanensis, opposite to the others, preferred a warmer environment with lower nutrients. The benthic foraminiferal fauna was dominated by Uvigerina spp.in the samples, indicating that the western Pacific deep water was under the control of the North Pacific Deep Water Mass during Early Pleistocene.

Based on the high-quality seismic profiles acquired from the northern South China Sea(SCS),we performed a detailed seismic sequence stratigraphic study.Correlation of the results with core samples and logging data from ODP Leg 184 and other deep sea records have been carried out to detect the difference and connection between geological and geophysical research methods,so as to reconstruct the sedimentary history of this area.About 14 seismic horizons are recognized by thin-bed tracking and seismic terminations analysis(including onlap, downlap, toplap, and truncation),including six continuous boundaries, three discontinuous boundaries, and five local boundaries. Then six seismic sequences are established.Detailed analyses of their reflecting characters, top and bottom ages, thickness and sedimentary rate helped build a Quaternary seismic stratigraphic framework at a resolution of ~10 ka.Consistency between seismic profiles and drilling data of ODP Sites 1144 and 1146 indicates that high resolution seismic analyses can produce a direct, detailed and reliable stratigraphic division scheme better than the traditional petrographic description sometimes. The correlation of seismic sequence framework with deep sea sediment records suggests that most of the reflector boundaries correspond to glacial periods or colder intervals of interglacial periods.6 continuous boundaries corresponding to large glacials in the Quaternary were identified.Besides, the seismic sequence results are correlated well with the climate change revealed by different proxies in marine sediment such as oxygen isotopes, carbon dust deposition, and water-layer structure. The most typical is SB 6 equivalent to the Middle Pleistocene Transition,a remarkable global climate event found in marine sediment, ice core, loess and geomagnetic records. Our results prove that integrated geological and geophysical researches can bring up a better understanding to the sedimentological evolution history of the studied area.

The carbonate content of bulk samples was analyzed for the sediment cores of MD06-3050 taken from Benham Rise, western Philippine Sea.The fluctuations in carbonate content for the past 150 ka show a general pattern of the "Atlantic type" of carbonate cycle,i.e.lower in glacials and higher in interglacials. Both sediment coarse fractions and foraminifera fragment ratios were used as indicators of the dissolution intensity of carbonate, and show a similar pattern to carbonate content change since 150 ka.TOC content in bulk samples was also measured, which showed a good consistency with carbonate content. In contrast, the primary productivities derived from the relative abundance of coccolith species F.profunda, yield significantly different trend.By comparison of above proxies,it is inferred that there may be multiple factors controlling the variation in carbonate content, but dissolution is certainly the most important. This dissolution pattern maybe related to the Corg/CaCO3 rain ratio and the ventilation of deep water.

Core MD06-3052 was taken from the continental slope off the Luzon Island in the western Philippine Sea.Multiple proxies such as AMS14C dating, sediment grain size and foraminiferal oxygen isotope were used to reveal the 5 turbidite events since 150 kaBP.The turbidites have coarser grain size than the normal layers, mostly composing of sand and silt. The occurrence time of the 5 turbidite events was calculated by AMS14C dating and oxygen isotope as 13.3,20.4,34.3,41.7 and 121.8 kaBP,separately,of which the latter 4 ones occurred in the low sealevel stages of the last glacial, especially in MIS 2-3,and the earliest one at the relatively low sealevel stage in MIS 5e,indicating that rapid sealevel oscillation during low sealevel stages was probably the main cause of the turbidite events. However, the steep slope may be a favorable topography for the sediment instabilities in Core MD06-3052.

Major elements were studied for reconstruction of sediment provenance and paleoenvironment over the last 24 kaBP with the samples collected from Core PC-1 in the northern Okinawa Trough. In addition to major elements, grain size of 402 samples and planktonic foraminifer δ18O of 344 samples have been analyzed that leads to an average resolution at centennial scale. The study offers a new high resolution material for reconstructing the history and main control factors of the sediment input in the northern Okinawa Trough over the last 24 ka.In according to the variation in major element compositions, the core could be divided into three distinct depositional units, separated by two volcanic layers at 7.3 and 12.7 cal kaBP respectively. Both provenance discriminating plot and R-mode factor analysis indicate that vertical changes in major elements are mainly contributed by the nearby terrestrial materials, whereas the contribution from hydrothermal activity, marine biologic deposition, and volcanism are minor. In particular, the contribution of nearby terrestrial materials show an obvious change trend and can be well correlated with the sea level fluctuation and the evolution of the Tsushima Warm Current. It seems that paleoclimate renders no significant impact on the change in terrigenous sediment provenance.

28 towing samples for plankton were collected from the upper waters of the Nansha Islands and its adjacent sea areas in the spring of 2002 and 2004 for understanding the distribution pattern of modern radiolarians and their annual changes in the upper waters of Nansha sea area before and after the summer monsoon onset. The results showed that the dominant species in the spring of 2002 and 2004 were consisting of the tropical-subtropical warm species;however there were obviously annual differences in abundance distributions of radiolarians and their typical species.Noticeably, the radiolarian abundance and its dominant species were significantly different before and after the summer monsoon onset, suggesting that there was a response of radiolarians in upper waters to summer monsoon onset in the South China Sea;The radiolarian abundance after the summer monsoon onset was significantly higher than that before the summer monsoon onset, indicating that the marine environment after the summer monsoon onset would be good for the survive of radiolarians. However,it is necessary to further study the mechanism of the change and try to find more direct environmental parameters to indicate the changes in distribution pattern before and after the summer monsoon onset. This study also confirmed that T.octacantha and S.glacialis could be proxies for upwelling processes in the tropic.
