Background: The prevalence of Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) in the Italian population of gamers is unknown. Several risk factors, including time spent playing (TSP), are proposed as an epiphenomenon of emotional dysregulation. Methods: The study estimated the prevalence of IGD in at-risk Italian online gamers, and the interplay between alexithymia and other risk factors. 5,979 responders were surveyed. IGDS-SF9 estimated pathological gaming. TAS-20 measured Difficult in Identifying (DIF) and Describing Feelings (DDF), and Externally Oriented Thinking (EOT). Results: 43% of participants had pathological IGD scores. Male gender (OR=1.2, 95% C.I.=1, 1.5, p=0.019), TSP (OR=7.6, 95% C.I.=5.5, 10.6, p<0.001), DIF (OR=1.5, 95% C.I.=1.1, 2.1, p=0.003), boredom/loneliness feelings (OR=1.8, 95% C.I.=1.5, 2, p<0.001), recent negative events (OR=1.1, 95% C.I.=1, 1.3, p=0.026), and a behavioral addiction (OR=2.1, 95% C.I.=1.2, 3.9, p=0.009) independently increased its risk. Conclusions: Almost one on two players joining online communities presented IGD. Some risk factors were crucial, including TSP, independently from emotional dysregulation.

Background: The current study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the Adverse Childhood Experiences – International Questionnaire (ACE-IQ) with individuals engaging in non-suicidal self-injury. Numerous studies have supported the association of adverse childhood experiences with non-suicidal self-injury. However, the majority of the measures used were limited to basic forms of abuse and neglect, indicating a need for the use of a more inclusive measure, such as the ACE-IQ. The psychometric properties of the measure though have only been briefly investigated with other populations, suggesting that a more thorough examination might be beneficial before its use. Method: Two hundred eighty-four adult participants (77.5% females) with a mean age of 23.4 (SD=5.7) were recruited online via specific self-harm groups on social media platforms. Participants were asked to complete an online survey consisting of three self-report measures regarding early childhood experiences and engagement in non-suicidal self-injury. Results: The findings of this study supported ACE-IQ’s reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.854), convergent validity (r= 0.85, p<0.001 with the CTQ-SF), predictive validity (R 2 = 0.12, p=0.001 of the SHI total score) and discriminant validity (F-value = 13.90, p<0.001). An exploration of the factor structure demonstrated a 5-factor solution (physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, exposure to violence, family environment). Conclusions: It was concluded that ACE-IQ is a reliable and valid measure to be used for research or clinical purposes with individuals engaging in non-suicidal self-injury, although further research is needed on its factor structure. Research and clinical implications are discussed.

Adopted adolescents show high rates of emotional-behavioral problems and they could also be more vulnerable to alexithymia, a risk factor for psychopathology in adolescents, that is more frequent in case of early relational trauma(s), often experienced by adoptees in pre-adoption life. However, no studies investigate alexithymia in adopted adolescents, therefore this pilot study aimed to: (a) assess the prevalence of alexithymia in adoptees in comparison with a national representative sample; (b) examine the relationships between alexithymia and emotional-behavioral problems in adoptees. Participants were 33 adoptees aged 10-19 years (54.5% boys), enrolled through social services. Measures were the self-report questionnaire Toronto Alexithymia Scale 20-item to measure participants’ alexithymia, and the Youth Self Report 11-18 years to assess emotional-behavioral problems. Main results highlighted: 1) 71% of adoptees with moderate-to-high levels of alexithymia, with adoptees as significantly more border-alexithymic (55%) than in normative peers; 2) Alexithymia and its factors Difficulty to identifying Feelings and Externally Oriented Thinking were related to more total, internalizing, externalizing and other problems (social, attentional, thought, binge-drinking, substance abuse, suicidality, etc...); 3) The difficulty identifying feelings was the unique predictor for 38% of total problems, 40% of internalizing ones, 22% of externalizing ones and 30% of other problems. In conclusion , the results suggest the clinical and scientific relevance of continuing the study of alexithymia in adopted adolescents, and future directions of research are suggested.

Health programs offer screening activities for the early detection of cancer in vulnerable population, but record very low participation rates. The authors have a theoretical framework to investigate the complexity of the phenomenon, in the psychodynamic and ethical dimensions, specific to women. In this study, the authors used semi-structured interviews and interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore the meaning-making processes of women who do not practice breast and cervical cancer prevention in Southern Italy neither in the public health-care system, nor in private health facilities. Three superordinate themes have emerged: taking care of oneself would be to love oneself; difficult contact with a sexual body;at the end, the fate decides . We highlight three levels in the psychism that underlie the behavior of not doing prevention: body-> affects-> thought. Understanding these psychic level mechanisms permits to support women's health policy, reducing costs and promoting health.

Social isolation and the loss of control associated with the COVID-19 lockdown led to elevated levels of perceived stress in many countries. The present study examines the effectiveness of 13 different coping strategies (SVF-78) and the personality trait grit (Grit-S) on perceptions of stress (PSS-10) in 438 participants (362 women, M age = 33.45 years, SD = 12.48) from the second to third week of lockdown. A structural equation model showed that coping strategies acted as a complete mediator of the relationship between grit and perceived stress, indicating that grit does not directly affect perceived stress but that people with higher levels of grit choose more effective coping strategies and that results in lower perceived stress. Overall, active emotion-focused strategies such as minimization and positive self-instruction were associated with lower levels of helplessness and a higher self-efficacy to cope with stress. Taking into account the different ways participants adopted coping strategies and relied upon grit, non-hierarchical clustering identified four specific profiles: gritty persons, easy-goers, avoiders, and people feeling powerless. The implications for each group are discussed.

Background: The literature shows that mathematical achievement can be influenced by affective factors, metacognitive abilities, and personality traits. The aim of the present study is to investigate the relationship between mathematical achievement, mathematical anxiety, perfectionism, and metacognitive abilities in a sample of secondary school students. Method : The sample was composed of 272 students of secondary school, 43.8% males, and 56.3%, with an average age of 12.08 (SD=.89). The Evaluate Metacognition, Negative Attitudes, and Mathematics Anxiety, and the Almost Perfect Scale were administered, while the data on academic performance in mathematics was based on the average scores earned on written tests across all participants during the current school year. Correlational and path analyses were performed. Results: The results showed significant correlations between the variables investigated. Furthermore, mathematics achievement was positively predicted by control in performing, mathematics attitudes, beliefs related to mathematics, and adaptive perfectionism, while it was negatively predicted by math anxiety, and maladaptive perfectionism. Conclusion: This study has important educational implications for teachers as it highlights the role of metacognitive, affective, and personality factors in the learning and achievement of mathematics.

By their textual and musical dramaturgy, operatic mises en scene offer a perfect view of the conflicts inherent in human nature. The passions of Madam Butterfly - the eponymous opera of G. Puccini - foment a tragic fate that is paradigmatic of masochism and melancholy. This remarkable opera offers avenues for figuration and identification that can help inform psychoanalysts and psychotherapists in their understanding and treatment of patients with extreme psychical organisations, where neither loss and separation nor ambivalence (which links together love and hate) can be elaborated. Having recalled the bases of the dialogue between psychoanalysis and cultural productions and introduced the story of Madam Butterfly and the figures making up the narrative, the article proposes to examine the cathectic process at work. Through the many twists and turns in her story, Madam Butterfly is seen to invest in Pinkerton, irremediably sealing her fate as a young wife. The Butterfly figure is a perfect illustration of the different forms of masochism, of passiveness and the snare of melancholy. These movements highlight the intensity of the narcissistic challenges so strongly expressed through the confrontation with the loss of the object. Butterfly cannot mobilise any form of ambivalence towards Pinkerton. Only such ambivalence would, however, in the recognition of otherness, have afforded her the means to survive the admittedly painful openness to the reality of loss. She offers and abandons herself to the one who derives pleasure from breaking her butterfly wings, stubbornly refusing to turn to any other person for succour, irremediably sealing her fate for eternity.

This study concerns male clients in substance abuse treatment, who were or had been football supporters, engaged in violence. Previous research has acknowledged the connection between football and violence, substances, homosociality and masculinity. Desire and treatment needs have however not been investigated. This study contributes to this knowledge gap. It is written from a treatment viewpoint, acknowledging current psychodynamic/analytical perspectives on gender, relationships, and affects. The study is based on the author’s clinical encounters with supporters who were in psychodynamic treatment due to problems with substance use. A thematic analysis of the author’s memories of the clinical encounters was performed. Three themes were identified; Alcohol and drugs, Desire and Clinical interaction. The results show that consumption of alcohol and cocaine was intermingled with the homosocial supporter-culture and accordingly with the clients’ social life, which needs to be acknowledged in treatment. Moreover, violence was not only connected to homosocial strivings and hypermasculine behaviors, but also to desire. Same-sex desire could for example arise during fighting, which could be an alluring part of violence, while simultaneously shame-provoking. The study shows that supporters, and possibly other homosocial groups, are more diverse than sometimes presented. Accordingly, clinicians who encounter committed football supporters should be open to questions of desire, including non-normative sexual experiences, while acknowledging that the topic might be difficult for clients. Clinicians also need to understand how intertwined supporter-culture and substances are, and discuss affects and relationships with clients.

Clinicians also need to understand how intertwined supporter-culture and substances are, and discuss affects and relationships with clients.","PeriodicalId":18428,"journal":{"name":"Mediterranean Journal of Clinical Psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2020-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48888248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Background: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is often measured through self-report questionnaires focused on measuring symptomatology (Y-BOCS, OCI-R, and PI). The scientific literature identifies the Pt scale as a distinctive marker, but does not report data related to a specific OCD profile of the MMPI-2 test. Therefore, based on some clinical considerations and preliminary investigations, the following study aims to identify a specific MMPI-OCD configuration marked by the presence of significant indicators able to describe its psychological functioning and its key features in cognitive, emotional and affective terms. Method : In order to explore the expected relationships, 395 participants were involved (average age: 34.20 years) and evaluated through the MMPI-2 test and the Yale-Brown interview. Results : MANOVA, Multiple Linear Regression Analysis and Discriminant Function Analysis confirm that the OCD is marked by the recurrence of three elevated clinical scales (Pt, D, Sc). Hyper-prudential reasoning and some reasoning bias, typically employed by these subjects, could justify such results. Conclusions: This specific configuration could therefore support the clinician during the assessment phases and lead him to identify – as well as differentiate – his characteristics from those of other psychological disorders, thus stimulating him to deepen during the interpretation of the results.
