Researchers in 14 countries recruited families of toddlers between the ages of roughly 18 and 36 months. These samples ranged from 48 to 119 participants, for a total N of 853. Primary caregivers completed the Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire (ECBQ) regarding temperament; the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) regarding behavior problems; adaptations of Socialization Goals and Parental Ethnotheories questionnaires regarding parental beliefs; and new questionnaires concerning daily activities and parent responses to temperament displays. Cultural orientation scores were obtained from archival data.

Research connecting children’s sleep and parental bedtime practices to temperament and behavior problems has typically focused on sleep problems and Western cultures, and this chapter examines relationships between child sleep and parental bedtime practices with toddler temperament and behavior problems from a cross-cultural perspective. Between- and within-country correlations revealed cross-cultural differences in how children’s sleep and parental bedtime practices relate to temperament and behavior problems. Thus, results provide support for culture-specific relations between child sleep, parental bedtime practices, child reactivity/regulation, and emerging behavior problems.

Cross-cultural comparisons of parent-reported behavior problems in toddlers revealed substantial effects of culture. Internalizing and total problems were highest in Collectivist and high Power Distance countries, such as China, Brazil, and Russia; and were low in the US and European nations. Externalizing problems were not clearly associated with cultural orientation, but were elevated in Latin American countries (Brazil, Chile, and Mexico) countries, and in Russia and Finland, with low externalizing reported in South Korea and the US.

Analyses in this chapter were aimed at identifying potential mediators classically defined as intermediaries that convey effects of other independent variables on outcomes. For mediation to be considered, all variables involved had to demonstrate significant correlations with one another. We thus considered 16 mediation possibilities. Six models deemed reflective of mediation were categorized as either involving “Think about It” Discipline as the mediator between Individualism/Power Distance and behavior problems or linking Power Distance to Internalizing through aspects of parenting involving sleep. Both cultural orientation dimensions address negotiating relationships between the individual and her social group, also relevant for family life.

Introduction to the Joint Effort Toddler Temperament Consortium (JETTC) 联合努力幼儿气质联盟(JETTC)简介
Pub Date : 2018-11-07 DOI: 10.4324/9781315203713-1
Gartstein, S. Putnam, H. Slobodskaya, C. Weerth
The conceptual basis for the Joint Effort Toddler Temperament Consortium (JETTC) is outlined, with culture characterized as a force influencing how individual differences in social-emotional functioning develop. Rothbart's psychobiological model, defining temperament as constitutionally based reactivity and regulation, as well as concepts integral to the developmental niche, including the child's routine and parental psychology (i.e., socialization goals for offspring and ethnotheories concerning appropriate parenting) are introduced. Our model of culturally driven influences on child behavioral outcomes guiding the book, with parent psychology and children’s daily context as mediators of cultural effects, including those linked to Hoftede et al. cultural orientation dimensions, is described.

Activities of daily living reflect critical contextual influences, operating via toddlers' exposure to culturally influenced learning over the course of early childhood. This chapter discusses the cross-cultural differences of various aspects of play, media exposure, and parent involvement in daily routine. Short-term cultural orientation was associated with more frequent play of both high- and low-intensity. Additionally, parents from more collectivistic cultures reported more TV exposure for their children than did parents from more individualistic cultures. Other, more nuanced patterns emerged as well, and are discussed with regard to existing literature and future exploration.
