Effectiveness evaluation of the TSV fault detection method using ring oscillators
Nikolaos Georgoulopoulos, Alkiviadis A. Hatzopoulos
During the 3D Stacked ICs fabrication, various defects in TSVs could come up, resulting both in performance and reliability reduction. These defects could produce serious problems in the early stages of fabrication. The situation gets more difficult because there is limited test access to TSVs, before and after wafer thinning. An analysis of effectiveness on oscillation-based pre-bond TSV test methods, based on frequency difference between a fault-free and a defective TSV, is presented. TSVs are embedded, modeled as RC elements, in a ring oscillator and the frequency is measured. When a defective TSV is inserted to the ring oscillator, it results to variations in the frequency of the circuit. The alteration of the frequency can lead us to the detection of leakage and resistive open faults. Many Monte Carlo simulations are used in each case (fault-free or faulty), to verify the robustness of the test. 65nm CMOS technology models were used for the design of the ring oscillators.

In this paper, a current-controlled fractional-order memristor model and its emulator are proposed. The emulator is built using two second generation current conveyor (CCII) and fractional-order capacitor. It is shown that the effect of the fractional order is clearly noticeable in the circuit response. PSPICE simulations are introduced for different values of the fractional order showing noticeable variations of the pinched-loop hysteresis curves. The fractional order model shows wider frequency of operation and larger pinched loop hysteresis area than the integer one.

The increase of the luminosity in the High Luminosity upgrade of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) will require the use of Tracker information in the evaluation of the Level-1 trigger in order to keep the trigger rate acceptable (i.e.: <1MHz). In order to extract the track information within the latency constraints (<5µs), a custom real-time system is necessary. We developed a prototype of the main building block of this system, the Pattern Recognition Mezzanine (PRM) that combines custom Associative Memory ASICs with modern FPGA devices. The architecture, functionality and test results of the PRM are described in the present work.

Pole-zero estimation and analysis of op-amp design with negative Miller compensation
Muhaned Zaidi, I. Grout, A. A'Ain
In this paper, pole-zero estimation, analysis and simplification of the transfer function for a two-stage operational amplifier (op-amp) is presented. The circuit design considered is a folded cascode complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) op-amp incorporating both Miller and negative Miller frequency compensation. The design was created using a 0.35 µm CMOS fabrication process and analyzed for DC gain, unity gain frequency, gain margin, phase margin and open-loop pole and zero locations. Cadence Virtuoso was used for design entry and the Spectre simulator used for circuit level simulation studies. The extracted poles and zeros were used to create the circuit transfer function which was then analyzed using MATLAB. This allowed the transfer function to be simplified by reducing the numbers of poles and zeros for comparison with the frequency response of the original circuit. Finally, a Verilog-A model was created and compared to the original circuit and the MATLAB simulation study results.

Fifth generation (5G) wireless technology is a promising solution for multi-Gbps data rates in future mobile communications. The new devices are expected to operate at millimeter wave frequencies. To address the 5G requirements novel antennas have to be developed. In this paper the Teaching-Learning-Optimization (TLBO) algorithm is applied in order to design a dual-band E-shaped patch antenna. The geometrical parameters of the aperture-coupled antenna are the inputs of the optimization algorithm. The method gives acceptable design solutions achieving simultaneously S11 minimization and low VSWR at the frequencies of interest (25GHz and 37GHz).

Millimeter wave communication in vehicular networks: Challenges and opportunities
M. Giordani, A. Zanella, M. Zorzi
The next generations of vehicles are expected to support advanced services, such as object detection and recognition, risk identification and avoidance, car platooning, and others, which will require data transmission rates of the order of gigabits per driving hour. This unprecedented amount of data to be exchanged goes beyond the capabilities of existing communication technologies and calls for new solutions. In this regard, the millimeter wave (mmWave) band is very appealing due to the potentially huge bitrates that can be achieved through mmWave links. This potential, however, is hindered by the harsh nature of the mmWave transmission channel, even more so in an automotive environment. This paper investigates the challenges that need to be addressed in order to enable mmWave automotive scenarios. Furthermore, we provide a preliminary analysis of coverage and connectivity in an automotive communication scenario based on mmWave links.

A comparative study between ordinary and fractional order pid controllers for modelling and control of an industrial system based on Genetic Algorithm

This paper applies the Genetic Algorithm as an optimization technique to find the optimal parameters of classical and fractional order controllers for the Hydraulic Servo System (HSS). It also presents the implementation of a non-linear mathematical model of Hydraulic Servo System based on the physical laws which govern that system. It is known that, the Hydraulic Servo System plays an elegant role in industrial applications in different fields. Furthermore, the studied hydraulic system has a nonlinear effect due to the friction between cylinders and pistons, fluid compressibility and valve dynamics. Due to these effects, the simulation results show that when using fractional order controllers, it gives better response, better performance indices, improved disturbance rejection behaviour, and distinguished sinusoidal trajectory than the conventional Proportional-Integral-Derivative PID)/Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers.

A smart phone image processing application for plant disease diagnosis
N. Petrellis
Although professional agriculture engineers are responsible for the recognition of plant diseases, intelligent systems can be used for their diagnosis in early stages. The expert systems that have been proposed in the literature for this purpose, are often based on facts described by the user or image processing of plant photos in visible, infrared, light etc. The recognition of a disease can often be based on symptoms like lesions or spots in various parts of a plant. The color, area and the number of these spots can determine to a great extent the disease that has mortified a plant. Higher cost molecular analyses and tests can follow if necessary. A Windows Phone application is described here capable of recognizing vineyard diseases through photos of the leaves with an accuracy higher than 90%. This application can easily be extended for different plant diseases and different smart phone platforms.

A dual band antenna based on a Quarter Mode Substrate Integrated Waveguide
Marcy S Alvarez, C. Kalialakis, F. Mira, S. Goudos
In this work, a new dual band antenna is presented. The antenna is implemented on a quarter mode Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) technology by introducing a slit shaped modification. The dual band antenna concept has been demonstrated for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi bands but the approach is readily applicable to centimeter and millimeter wave applications due to the low loss characteristics of SIW. Good agreement has been observed between simulations and measurements on a prototype.
