Graph-based retrieval of PET-CT images using vector space embedding
Ashnil Kumar, Jinman Kim, D. Feng, M. Fulham
Graph-based content-based image retrieval (CBIR) techniques, which use graphs to represent image features and calculate image similarity using the graph edit distance, achieve high retrieval accuracy. However, such techniques suffer from high computational complexity. In this paper, we present a graph-based CBIR algorithm that achieves improved retrieval efficiency. We compute a vector space embedding for every graph, using their distances from a set of prototype graphs, so that each vector component represents a distortion from a prototype. This process is performed offline. We compare images by computing the Euclidean distance of the vector embeddings, which is a faster process than calculating the graph edit distance. We evaluated our work using 50 combined positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PET-CT) volumes of patients with lung tumours. Our results show that our method is at least 21 times faster than the graph edit distance with a mean average precision difference of less than 4%.

Cardiovascular variability and nociception/anti-nociception balance during anesthesia
A. Castro, P. Amorim, M. Coimbra
Cardiovascular variability and homeostasis control in response to precise noxious stimuli and different analgesic doses were analyzed. Cardiovascular variability was altered in response to noxious stimulation, and amplitude responses varied in a dose-dependent manner with the analgesic. Responses were more pronounced to laringoscopy/intubation, when compared to tetanic and incision stimuli. Homeostasis control was also altered in response to stimulation, demonstrating that dynamic cardiovascular control relations are modified in response to precise noxious stimuli and anesthetic drugs.

The Smart-Condo interdisciplinary team (including computing science, industrial design, health psychology and occupational therapy) conducts research on putting ICT in the service of health care, focusing on empowering individuals to take control of their health management. This past year, the focus of our activities has been the development of a framework for the design and development of mobile apps to encourage behavioral changes. Grounding our framework the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Intention-Behavior Gap Theory, we explicitly designed all the functions in our applications to influence behavior. From a technical perspective, the applications support personalization, easy data recording and interactive reviewing, and subtle interventions (reminders and personalized information) to help behavior change. The user interface, informed by design theory, is conceived to make the applications engaging and easy to navigate. Bringing these three areas of knowledge together in the design of our apps will enable the systematic construction of a family of applications that together will have the potential to affect significant behavior change. In this paper we discuss the framework and the first two applications we have developed with it.

A secure RBAC mobile agent access control model for healthcare institutions
Cátia Santos-Pereira, A. B. Augusto, R. Correia, M. Correia
In medical organizations, healthcare providers need to have fast access to patients' medical information in order to make accurate diagnoses as well as to provide appropriate treatments. Efficient healthcare is thus highly dependent on doctors being provided with access to patients' medical information at the right time and place. However it frequently happens that critical pieces of pertinent information end up not being used because they are located in information systems that do not inter-operate in a timely manner. Unfortunately the standard operational mode for many healthcare applications, and even healthcare institutions, is to be managed and operated as isolated islands that do not share information in an efficient manner. There are many reasons that contribute to this grim state of affairs, but what interests us the most is the lack of enforceable security policies for systems interoperability and data exchange and the existence of many heterogeneous legacy systems that are almost impossible to directly include into any reasonable secure interoperable workflow. In this paper we propose a RBAC mobile agent access control model supported by a specially managed public key infrastructure for mobile agent's strong authentication and access control. Our aim is to create the right means for doctors to be provided with timely accurate information, which would be otherwise inaccessible, by the means of strongly authenticated mobile agents capable of securely bridging otherwise isolated institutional eHealth domains and legacy applications.

An automatic method for the estimation of Arteriolar-to-Venular Ratio in retinal images
B. Dashtbozorg, A. Mendonça, A. Campilho
This paper presents an automatic approach for the estimation of Arteriolar-to-Venular Ratio (AVR) in retinal images. The method was assessed using the images of the INSPIRE-AVR database. A mean error of 0.05 was obtained when the method's results were compared with reference AVR values provided with this dataset, thus demonstrating the adequacy of the proposed solution for AVR estimation.

Integrating echocardiogram reports with medical imaging
Luís Bastião, Samuel Campos, C. Costa, J. Oliveira
Healthcare institutions are increasingly taking advantage of information and computational systems to enhance the efficiency and quality of their services. These IT systems are normally able to handle huge amounts of digital data, and to extract relevant fingerprints useful to improve the quality of clinical practice. However, building automatized processes to achieve this over multiple and heterogeneous databases is still a challenge. This paper presents a new approach able to collect and index information from distinct medical data sources, allowing us to identify important metrics to evaluate the performance and quality of clinical services. A case study combining information from ultrasound medical images and echocardiogram clinical reports is also presented.

Investigating post-processing of scanning laser ophthalmoscope images for unsupervised retinal blood vessel detection
Gavin Robertson, E. Pellegrini, C. Gray, E. Trucco, T. MacGillivray
We explore post-processing of scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) images for the automatic detection of retinal blood vessels. The retinal vasculature is first enhanced using morphological and Gaussian matched filters before a thresholding technique produces a binary vessel map. Such permutations of post-processing techniques are commonly used to achieve unsupervised classification of the vasculature in fundus images, and it is the purpose of this study to investigate their applicability to SLO imaging. We compare the results of vascular detection as performed on SLO and fundus images.

Adaptation of marching cubes for the simulation of material removal from segmented volume data
S. Wijewickrema, I. Ioannou, G. Kennedy
Virtual reality surgical simulators contain anatomical models constructed from 3D medical image data such as CT or MRI scans. Typically, data is segmented to identify anatomical structures of interest and visualised using a rendering algorithm. Rendered surfaces in surgical simulators must be updated in real time to reflect user interaction within the virtual environment, such as cutting or drilling. Since its introduction in 1987, marching cubes has become a popular rendering algorithm for use in medical image visualisation, due to its simplicity and speed. However, the algorithm is designed for use with continuous data rather than discrete data, as is the case with segmented data. Applying marching cubes to segmented data results in blocky surfaces that require smoothing. In addition, marching cubes uses a single threshold (iso-value) to define the rendered surface and does not provide a means of rendering surfaces based on an upper and lower threshold (iso-interval). This ability is necessary if we wish to render individual segments within a segmented data volume. We introduce modifications to the marching cubes algorithm to enable the use of iso-intervals to construct smooth surfaces representing different segments from segmented volume data. We also discuss a way to render real-time material removal from the constructed surfaces. Our evaluation shows that the performance of this method compares favourably to an existing method, with decreased memory requirements and shorter start-up times.

As telehealth systems are increasingly being adopted by healthcare providers, a growing number of medical practitioners need to learn to use such systems. Despite this, however, most medical schools do not currently include telehealth-related content in their curriculum. In this paper we demonstrate, through examples from our own experience, how the Problem Based Learning method can be used to incorporate telehealth systems in medical science education. We also present a survey of medical students and faculty, conducted at a university in Brazil, to gain the participants' opinions on the nu-case mobile telehealth system. The results of the survey show that nu-case provides support for a range of tasks that a telehealth system needs to cater for in the context of our application area.

Learner's satisfaction within a breast imaging eLearning course for radiographers
Inês C. Moreira, S. R. Ventura, Isabel Ramos, P. Rodrigues
Background: An asynchronous eLearning system was developed for radiographers in order to promote a better knowledge about senology and mammography. Objectives: to assess the learners' satisfaction. Methods: Target population included radiographers and radiography students, in order to assess eLearning satisfaction according to different experience levels in breast imaging. Satisfaction was measured through a questionnaire developed especially for eLearning systems, using a seven-point Likert scale. Main topics related are content, interface, personalization and learning community. Results: Overall, 85% of learners were satisfied with the course and 87,5% considered that the course is successful. Main areas that were evaluated by most learners in a positive way were interface and content (between six and seven-point); on the other hand, learning community presented a wider distribution of answers. Conclusions: The course provides an overall high degree of learner satisfaction, thus providing more effective knowledge gain on breast imaging for radiographers.
