Pap smear is a widely accepted screening method used to detect potentially precancerous and cancerous processes in the cervix. Objective: To find out the prevalence of abnormal pap smear conditions in women attending Gynaecology out-patient department. Methods: This retrospective study was carried out in the Gynaecology unit during January 1st 2018 to December 31st 2018 on 537 pap smear samples. The data was entered in excel and was presented in percentages. Results: 43.45% had complaints of white discharge. 5.5% had epithelial cell abnormality; around 85% were negative for intraepithelial lesion or Malignancy. 4.35% of the study population had Atypical squamous cells high grade cannot be excluded ASC-H and also Adenocarcinoma. None had atypical glandular cells. Conclusion: Regular screening camps should be organized by local government and medical fraternity to benefit women to reach the whole community.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.24321/2454.8642.201910 Background: Caesarean Section (CS) is one of the most commonly performed operations in obstetrics. The rate of caesarean section is increasing throughout the world and not surprisingly also in India. Caesarean sections are done due to various reasons, and often used liberally. We conducted this study to assess the rate of Caesarean deliveries and its indications in a tertiary care hospital in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India. Methods: This was a prospective observational study where data was collected for all Caesarean sections performed from January 2018 to December 2018 and the data was statistically analysed by MS Excel and frequency distribution tables. Result: There were total 2646 deliveries over the study period of one year with caesarean rate of 38.51%. 73.61% were emergency CS. Most common indications of CS were post caesarean pregnancy (24.73%) and fetal distress (15.11%) and more than 75% were primary caesarean section. Conclusion: A high CS rate with a high percentage of primary caesarean section was observed in this study. Indications included mainly post caesarean pregnancies, fetal distress and non-reassuring cardiotocography, portraying the low threshold for CS. Standard national protocols and practice of evidence-based obstetrics along with maintenance of institutional audits are needed to decrease the escalating CS rate.

Background: Blood banks should be aimed at high quality of transfusion practices in terms of standard practices from screening of donors, collection, separation and issue of blood and blood products. Regular transfusion audits should be carried out in the blood bank to know the utilization trends. Aims and Objectives: To study the utilization pattern of blood and blood components in a tertiary care hospital. Materials and Methods: It was a retrospective cross-sectional study carried out at the blood bank of a tertiary care hospital for a period of three years from 2015-2017. Details of collection of whole blood, preparation of components, departments requesting blood products were collected from the records of the blood bank. Data entered in excel and frequency and distribution of variables were calculated. Result: A total of 10072 blood components were prepared during the study period of three years. Out of the 2372 whole blood collected during the study period, 1981 (83.5%) were utilized. Out of the 4961 components prepared, 4726 (95.3%) of packed cells, 2942 (59.3%) of platelets, 4516 (91%) of Fresh frozen plasma was utilized. During the study period, Obstetrics and Gynecology department requested 3610 (35.8%) blood products, followed by Orthopedics department 2098 (20.8%). Conclusion: Every blood bank should audit the pattern of utilization of blood and blood products which can serve as an internal quality control for the effective functioning of blood bank. A good communication between the clinicians and the blood bank personnel will minimize the inappropriate usage of blood and blood products.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.24321/2454.8642.201907 Introduction: Knowledge of the anatomy of occipital condyles is very useful for the surgeon during condylar drilling to avoid injury to neural structures. Material and Methods: This study was conducted on occipital condyles in 100 dried human skulls of unknown age and sex. The morphometric analysis was performed for the length, width, height, anterior intercondylar distance and posterior intercondylar distance of occipital condyles on both sides. Results: The mean values were found to be 24.6 mm (right) and 22.65 mm (left) for the length, 12.48 mm (right) and 13.32 mm (left) for the width and 9.37 mm (right) and 9.49 mm (left) for the height. The mean anterior and posterior intercondylar distances were found to be 21.48 mm and 42.3 mm respectively. Conclusion: The knowledge of morphometric parameters can be used for the planning of the extent of condylar resection during transcondylar approach without damaging the neurological structures.

were collected from all the 40 patients of abnormal vaginal discharge presenting with pruritus vulvae. The smears were studied cytologically and sensitivity of each method was calculated Vaginals swabs were taken for culture. Results: A total of 40 cases of abnormal vaginal discharge presenting with pruritus vulvae were studied. Total of 80% cases were in the reproductive age group (i.e. 20-50 years). LBC could diagnose 13 cases of bacterial vaginosis while CP diagnosed 14 cases with a sensitivity of 86.67% and 93.3% respectively. 6 cases were diagnosed cytologically as candidiasis by LBC and by 5 CP with a sensitivity of 75% and 62.5% respectively. LBC and CP both had a sensitivity of 50% in the detection of Trichomonas vaginalis. Conclusion: Due to its cost effectiveness CP is as good as LBC in detection of specific infections especially in resource poor countries.
