The reproducibility of some solid-state phase transition temperatures, as deter- mined by differential scanning calorimetry, is assessed by a literature search and also by analysis of results obtained in the limit of zero heating rate for KNO3, CsCl, and anhydrous Li2SO4, using different instruments. The study is complemented by an overview of previously published results for the phase transition temperatures of several inorganic materials commonly used for temperature calibration of thermal analysis instruments. Reproducibility among the onset temperature of solid-state phase transitions of inorganic salts, as determined by differential scanning calorimetry, can be conservatively estimated to be within ±1 oC under favorable circumstances and around ±2 oC in general.

Hybrid polymeric membranes with the addition of graphene and derivatives are currently being developed and studied due to the unique properties of this material, whose addition in membranes is related to the enhancement of physical and mechanical properties and separation performance. In this study, polysulfone (PSU) membranes containing graphene oxide (PSU/GO) and reduced graphene oxide (PSU/RGO) were developed at a concentration of 0.5 wt.%, and their morphology, physical-chemical and thermal properties, and separation performance were evaluated. Membrane morphology was evaluated by SEM, thermal stability by TGA/DTG, functional groups and material structure by FTIR, mechanical properties by pressure test, and gas permeation using synthetic air. Agglomeration of GO and RGO was verified, a factor that may have interfered with the performance of the membranes. There was no change in the thermal stability of the membranes with the presence of GO/RGO, nor the occurrence of new bands observed in FTIR spectra, indicating that the interactions between PSU and GO/RGO were physical. All membranes resisted the maximum system pressure (6 bar), and it was not possible to identify whether the addition of graphene-derived materials had a positive effect on the mechanical strength. PSU/GO membranes had a better performance regarding synthetic air permeability in the gas permeation test than PSU and PSU/RGO membranes, possibly due to the functional groups present in GO, which facilitated the mass transfer within the polymer structure.

Water contamination by micropollutants is increasing, including steroid hormones. Indiscriminate use, incorrect disposal, inefficient treatment of water and effluents, and less restrictive legislation promote the contamination of effluents and water, with harmful consequences for the environment and human health. In this work, it was evaluated the use of reverse osmosis in the removal of ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel, synthetic steroids that are components of contraceptives. The hydraulic permeability of the membrane was assessed before, during, and after reverse osmosis of an aqueous solution of contraceptive, as well as the retention of hormones, of a synthetic solution of contraceptive used as the feed. 95.6% retention of the compounds was observed, demonstrating the efficiency of reverse osmosis in the removal of solutes. In addition, there was no important reduction of the hydraulic permeability of the membrane when compared to the clean membrane and after reverse osmosis, demonstrating that the cleaning step was efficient in removing fouling or other interferents formed during the process. Reverse osmosis was efficient in the removal of constituents of contraceptives from aqueous solutions, being an option in the treatment of water and effluents aiming to attain better potability and smaller toxicity risks for the environment and human health.

Energy consumption based on the building heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems is sharply rising daily. At this point, heat recovery ventilation systems save energy while contributing to indoor air quality and thermal comfort. This work mainly focuses on designing the air-to-air cross-flow heat exchanger system and duct lines. First, the ducts, bends, vents, and heat recovery ventilation unit are placed around the selected domain complying with the ASHRAE 55 and 62.1 standards. The requirements on temperature levels of the cold and hot streams, air flow rates, number of vents, velocity at the supply air vent outlets are considered. Then, calculations are conducted for the cross-flow air-to-air heat exchanger to determine the number of layers, heat transfer surface areas, flow regime, and heat transfer rate. Thermal calculations of the recuperator system are initially performed by effectiveness-number of transfer unit (ϵ-NTU) method as the outlet temperatures are not known at the beginning of the design. In addition, the findings are compared and validated via logarithmic mean temperature difference methodology. The results show that the fresh air temperature can increase from 5 °C to 13.32 °C when the exhaust air temperature is at 26 °C in winter. Furthermore, the heat transfer rate of air-to-air heat exchanger system is analytically calculated as 1806.7 W and 1807.5 W via ϵ-NTU and logarithmic mean temperature difference (LMTD) methods, respectively.
