Transverse-mode dynamics in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers excited by fast electrical pulses 快速电脉冲激励下垂直腔面发射激光器的横向模动力学

Summary form only given. With modulation bandwidth of 10-15 GHz, vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) have become a suitable choice for optical interconnects. However, the presence of higher order modes in the cavity can cause rapid variations of the spectral, spatial and noise characteristics of the laser beam that can affect the gigahertz performance of these devices. Herein we present measurements of the response of VCSELs excited by 0.8-1-ns pulses that show the importance of mode competition and spatial hole burning in the dynamics in VCSELs.

Periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) is an attractive nonlinear medium on account of its very large effective nonlinearity and the fact that with suitable period it can provide noncritical phase-matching for generation of any wavelengths in its transmission range. Here we report the first (to the authors' knowledge) operation of a PPLN synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator.

The objective of the Precision Laser Machining Technology Reinvestment Project (PLM TRP) is to develop the next generation laser machine tools and advanced manufacturing processes for both commercial and military applications. This is a government-industry cost-share program sponsored by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) to provide the most advanced and affordable U.S. military systems, and the most competitive commercial products in the global marketplace for the automotive, aircraft/aerospace, heavy equipment, and shipbuilding industries. To accomplish the objective a consortium of twenty organizations that represent industrial users, process developers, system integrators and technology developers has been established forming a user-driven, horizontally and vertically integrated team.

Contradirectional two-wave mixing with partially coherent waves in photorefractive crystals 光折变晶体中部分相干波的双向混频

In this paper, we present the results of theoretical analysis and experimental investigation of contradirectional two-wave mixing with partially coherent waves in photorefractive crystals using coupled quasi-monochromatic pump and signal waves. Because the complex amplitudes are stationary random processes of time we can define the corresponding self coherence functions and mutual coherence function. Because the coherence time of a wideband laser source is substantially less than the relaxation time of a typical photorefractive material, the position and profile of the photorefractive grating are nearly temporally constant. As an approximation, the amplitude of the grating is proportional to the mutual coherence of the two waves.

We present an experimental investigation of light-induced director axis reorientation in dye-doped surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystals (SSFLCs) by means of the two-wavelength and pump-probe measurement. A large improvement in sensitivity and response speed of the light-induced director axis reorientation, compared with undoped SSFLCs, is demonstrated. We also perform image processing using the dye-doped SSFLCs as a spatial filters.

We have demonstrated a new vertical-cavity bistable device which exhibits all-optical switching at 1.55-/spl mu/m wavelength, with submilliwatt threshold and large contrast ratio. It was realized by wafer fusion of an InGaAsP/InP active heterostructure onto a AlAs/GaAs Bragg mirror. Finally the carrier-induced dispersive nonlinearity of the InGaAsP active layer has been investigated.

Summary form only given. Optical trapping of micron-size dielectric microspheres using a single beam gradient force was first demonstrated by Ashkin in 1986. Since then, extensive research and development of this technique have turned it into a practical device (known as optical tweezers), which has been used in a wide variety of biological and biomedical applications. In this paper, we report the first experimental observation, we believe, of trapping and manipulation of dielectric particles by a set of two-beam interference fringes.
