American food/fast food was perceived expensive besides being out-of-way meals in Indian culture earlier. Though many reports highlight the unhealthy nature of American foods, yet Indians have developed a taste for American fast foods. Accordingly the present study was taken up with the following objectives namely the factors influencing the consumers perceptions about American foods, perceptions about AFR’s and factors influencing consumers perceptions about AFR’s in Bengaluru City. A total sample size of 90 respondent consumers and seven AFR’s were chosen for the study. Health and affordability, classy sensory attribute, nutrition, psychological dimension, menu aspects, prices and westernization were the perceptions about American foods by the consumers. Sensory attributes of foods is the major factor influencing consumers perceptions about American foods followed by nutrition and health and psychological factors. Psychological experience, social values, authentic culture, marketing orientation/ dimension, service and location orientation were the perceptions about American Food Restaurants by the consumers. Enjoyment is the major factor influencing consumers perceptions about AFR’s followed by restaurant attributes and services and experience.

The cotton seed industry has emerged as an important component in the seed market basically due to its ability for development of hybrids and diversity of production. The study was taken in Haveri and Dharwad districts of North Karnataka. In the study area two marketing channels were identified through which hybrid cotton seeds in the study area were marketed from the producers to the ultimate consumers. In Dharwad and Haveri channel I is having the highest marketing efficiency (2.28%) and (2.24%) compared to channel II. The poor efficiency was noticed in Channel II where the total marketing cost was the highest in this channel, this is because of involvement of intermediaries. So the results reveled that channel I is more popular in the study area. In both districts Channel II is preferred more by the dealers. The highest percentage of margin obtained by the dealer varied from 12.72 per cent in kanaka and lowest per cent of margin 8.70 is obtained in cash brand.

A study was undertaken to examine the nature and extent of post-harvest losses in onion supply chain in the Ajmer district which is major onion district of Rajasthan. A total sample size of 75 onion growers, 20 wholesalers and 25 retailers were taken from Ajmer district. Maximum aggregate post-harvest losses (22.76 kg/q) have been found at producer level due to faulty storage, lack of adequate transportation, drying, improper handling of the produce at the time of marketing, rotted bulbs, doubles, bolters, poor packing facilities, injury at the time of harvesting and de-topping. Total losses in the supply chain were estimated to be 28.95 kg/q and (78.62%) losses were observed at farm level and rest were contributed at wholesale and retail level. The farm level post harvest losses excluding the losses at farm level storage for Ajmer district was estimated to be 747.82 q for the year 2009-10.

Food processing sector acts as an essential bridge between the agriculture and industrial sector, which is requisite for overall development of an economy. India has a diverse climatic condition which is capable of providing a raw material base for food processing companies. Despite of being one of the largest producers of raw material for the Food Processing Industry (FPI) in the world, the FP industry is not fully developed. It calls for considerable capital investments. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) can be one of the best alternatives for this investment. The government is trying to attract FDI in this sector by providing transparent and investment friendly climate. The government has started a “Make in India” initiative which seeks to club the demand and supply advantages within India. Government is dynamically promoting the concept of Mega Food Parks (MFPs) to attract FDI. But still major constraints in expanding the food processing sector are investment and lack of adequate infrastructure facilities. The objective of this paper is to analyze the importance of FDI inflow in the food processing sector by using time series data and government policy response over the time to strengthen the industry.

Cotton is an important fibre crop of India which plays a dominant role in the country’s economy by meeting the domestic and export demands. It contributes significantly to both agriculture and industry in terms of farm income, employment and export earnings. India, despite being the second largest producer of cotton in the world, has not exploited its potential to emerge as a major player in the world raw cotton exports. Exports of yarns, textiles and clothing to the world market are increasingly important source of derived demand for Indian cotton. Although domestic demand accounts for most Indian cotton consumption, growth in textiles and clothing exports is outpacing domestic demand and is increasingly important determinant of overall cotton and fibre demand in India. India’s exports have been rising sharply in the past few years. Export was highest in 2007-08 accounting 80 lakh bales. It declined in 2008-09 to 50 lakh bales due to recession led lower demand. In 2009-10, the export was 65 lakh bales within short period. Several factors have contributed to the variability in exports; these included large domestic consumption, fluctuations in production due to vagaries of weather, competition from other cotton growing countries and insufficient exportable surplus of cotton production during certain years and the absence of a steady export policy. Primarily, the export of cotton depends on domestic production and government’s intervention in its export trade. Under such a scenario, it is appropriate to examine the export competitiveness and direction of exports to various markets with a suitable econometric model, which may help us to quantify the shifts in the shares to different markets as well as between the markets over a period of time. In the era of globalization, foreign trade policies have given high importance in boosting agricultural exports. This has resulted in cut-throat competition among nations in the trade scenario of various commodities and in this connection a country’s exports will be decided by its efficiency in trade promotion and its price competitiveness. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to analyse the dynamics of changes in the export of cotton from India by estimating the probability of retention and switching pattern by employing Markov chain model.

Kulkarni","doi":"10.15740/has/ijcbm/10.2/169-174","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15740/has/ijcbm/10.2/169-174","url":null,"abstract":"Cotton is an important fibre crop of India which plays a dominant role in the country’s economy by meeting the domestic and export demands. It contributes significantly to both agriculture and industry in terms of farm income, employment and export earnings. India, despite being the second largest producer of cotton in the world, has not exploited its potential to emerge as a major player in the world raw cotton exports. Exports of yarns, textiles and clothing to the world market are increasingly important source of derived demand for Indian cotton. Although domestic demand accounts for most Indian cotton consumption, growth in textiles and clothing exports is outpacing domestic demand and is increasingly important determinant of overall cotton and fibre demand in India. India’s exports have been rising sharply in the past few years. Export was highest in 2007-08 accounting 80 lakh bales. It declined in 2008-09 to 50 lakh bales due to recession led lower demand. In 2009-10, the export was 65 lakh bales within short period. Several factors have contributed to the variability in exports; these included large domestic consumption, fluctuations in production due to vagaries of weather, competition from other cotton growing countries and insufficient exportable surplus of cotton production during certain years and the absence of a steady export policy. Primarily, the export of cotton depends on domestic production and government’s intervention in its export trade. Under such a scenario, it is appropriate to examine the export competitiveness and direction of exports to various markets with a suitable econometric model, which may help us to quantify the shifts in the shares to different markets as well as between the markets over a period of time. In the era of globalization, foreign trade policies have given high importance in boosting agricultural exports. This has resulted in cut-throat competition among nations in the trade scenario of various commodities and in this connection a country’s exports will be decided by its efficiency in trade promotion and its price competitiveness. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to analyse the dynamics of changes in the export of cotton from India by estimating the probability of retention and switching pattern by employing Markov chain model.","PeriodicalId":222052,"journal":{"name":"INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF COMMERCE AND BUSINESS MANAGEMENT","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123590082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
