This paper discusses some of the advantages of using a multimedia system to deliver the diverse range of information within the manufacturing environment. The multimedia technologies allow a user to have controlled access to the required information within a a range of applications, in an easily accessible and structured manner, by using on a system delivering maintenance and process information on the factory floor, within a fully automated manufacturing plant. The close monitoring of the operational performance of various plants, manufacturing shops-floor/cells/machines, as well as their associated instrumentation and control is seen to be of increasing strategic importance. Failures can lead to increased costs, reduced product quality, consistency and production, plant shutdown, an increased environmental impact. There is a real need for the advanced monitoring/supervising technologies to be applied, and their potential demonstrated, on complex industrial plants. With the integration of multimedia technologies and knowledge-based systems with network technology giving access to external databases, we may analyze a concept of industrial multimedia that can be realized.

In this paper, we present an algorithm for edge detection in noisy images. First, an image adaptive neighborhood hypergraph (IANH) representation is computed. Next, a detection procedure based on hypergraph properties is used to classify hyperedges either as noise, edges or region. The application of this technique to noisy images has resulted in a considerable improvement in performance as compared to classical approaches.

The paper is concerned with developing novel multiuser detection algorithms. The main stress is on blind decorrelation of weakly stationary processes which can successfully combat multiuser interference (MUI) and intersymbol interference (ISI). The detector architecture includes an adaptive channel identifier (capable of blind decorrelation), followed by a stochastic Hopfield net which performs the task of multiuser detection. The key contribution to mobile communication lies in two factors: (i) blind decorrelation which can identify the channel even in the case of fading; (ii) the use of the stochastic Hopfield net which can guarantee good performance due to its ability to reach the global minimum of the associated quadratic form. The proposed detector structure is proven to be superior to the RAKE or Viterbi receivers. The results are demonstrated by simulations as well.

In this work we discuss an object-based wavelet image coding system which employs the wavelet packet best basis algorithm to adapt to each object separately. In addition to the increased functionality inherent to any object-based codec, the enhanced rate-distortion performance for images exhibiting objects with different frequency properties is shown.

In this paper we describe a multimedia presentation, which is designed as multimedia application for teaching and explaining principles of telecommunication protocols. The ISDN User Adaptation protocol for establishing an ISDN call connection through an IP network is presented The IUA protocol supports transport of Q.921 primitives from an ISDN network through an IP network. The designed presentation follows the modern technology and ways of education and is in the form of an interactive movie.

The field of the research related to the implementation of nonlinear order-statistic filters through their equivalent expression by positive Boolean functions (PBF) lies in the conversion between the traditional filtering functions and their corresponding PBF. In the case of the order-statistic LUM smoothers, the complexity of minimal PBF depends on a smoothing parameter and window size. In order to speed up the binary operations, this paper focuses on the binary analysis of the LUM smoothers in the dependence on the configuration of ones and zeros inside binary input sets, too. The proposed simplification is described in the form of the elementary expressions, where the binary value of the central sample and a number of the ones in its neighborhood play the key role.

A new approach for real-time shadow detection and elimination is presented. In contrast to existing methods, hue and saturation is approximated in the YUV-colour space straight away. We show the linear influence of shadow to the YUV-values and exploit this behaviour in a fast decision scheme. The proposed method is robust and capable for real-time video processing without any need of colour space transformations.

In last decade, we have seen the first steps to the end of passive television. Digital technology is mature enough to enhance traditional TV (limited to content reproduction) with computing capability to run multimedia software integrating richer formats. One step further, Internet access through television is becoming a real possibility. The MHP standard is the first one that tries to define regulations in that sense. Here, we comment some technical aspects of the MHP solution.

Facial feature detection is an important preprocessing step used in facial image processing. Most of the image-based facial feature detection techniques use only the luminance information ignoring the color information of the images. We introduce a method of adding color-space information to the principal component analysis (PCA) based eigen features technique. The experimental results show that the color information helps to improve the detection performance of the detectors when compared with the detectors using only the luminance information.
