Thomas De Quincey helped popularize the notion of addict-as-celebrity. But even though much attention has been paid to De Quincey from a variety of perspectives, little attention has been paid to the role that thinking ? intellectualizing for the sheer pleasure of it ? was also central to De Quincey"s work. This is surprising, given De Quincey"s clear and repeated facility for elegant thought. Moreover, De Quincey"s facility for abstraction and dreamy intellectualizing can itself be seen as a type of “addiction”.

There have been many justifications arguing for, and against, the use of public funding for sport stadia. Proponents of public funding have used arguments ranging from tangible aspects such as the increased tax revenues of an urban metropolitan area to the intangible “feel good” aspects of the local citizenry, while opponents have used the same arguments as evidence that public funding is not justified. However, as this paper suggests, very few researchers and practitioners have studied the positive effects of sport stadia projects on urban regeneration, which have demonstrable tangible, and intangible, positive benefits to the urban areas.

The revolutionary developments in Middle East, which had toppled the supposedlyresilient authoritarian regimes, caught all the governments unaware. The Russian government was regarded to be inconsistent in its response to these events like the other states. In this article, I argue that the Russian response is consistent with its new stature as a middle-power which has been trying to establish pragmatic relations with all significant actors in the region throughout the last decade. Moreover, the lessons of the “color revolutions” that erupted on the territory of the former-Soviet Union have a significant impact on the current Russian position regarding the Middle East.

This paper is an investigation into the controversy surrounding the legitimacy of the use of the free verse in Egypt. To that effect some selected poems were analyzed to highlight our claim. The free verse was introduced in the late forties in the Arabic world by two prominent Arabian pioneers; Nazik al-Mala’ika, an Iraqi female poet (1923-2007), and Salah Abd al-Sabour, an Egyptian poet (1931-1981) assisted by others. This new poetry was considered a revolution against the traditional form of Arabic poetry known as alkasidatu al-Amoudyatu, still controversial today, even though it was not concerned with form only as the new form of free verse began to be seen rightly as part of the content itself in the sixties (Boullata,1976).In addition to being influenced by T.S. Eliot (1965-1988),the free verse poets were affected by social change as they realized they had to respond to the changes of their time. From the beginning of this movement till now, the traditional poetry has not disappeared as was expected but is still being observed by the remaining pioneers of the free verse.

Current research suggests that synchronous text-based chat tools encourage both noticing and negotiation of meaning in language learner interactions, both of which are regarded as important procedures in language learning. This paper seeks to identify what affordances of synchronous text-based chat tools may encourage such language behavior. Using concurrent think-aloud report data from a language learner interaction, it was found that learner perceptions of chat tools as social tools may actually inhibit noticing and meaning negotiation. However, the lack of turn-taking conventions in text chats may serve to encourage modifications of output, while visual adjacency of corrective recasts to error may promote noticing.

International universities are becoming a more prominent part of the higher education landscape as the world becomes more global. Instructors are usually cognizant of what motivations domestic students but are they as sensitive to the motivational backgrounds of their international students? The largest group of international students in Korea is Chinese nationals. What motivates Chinese students in their own university setting and how that can translate into motivation for them here in Korea? To add insight to this issue the author arranged and analyzed a survey of 116 Chinese university ESL students from a well-known university in China.

This study sought to find out how effective instructions are in promoting language proficiency of EFL Tanzania university students. 350 students from the University of Dar es Salaam participated in the study, guided by four questions focussing on a) students’ overall proficiency after the instruction, b) their proficiency levels across various academic disciplines, and c) across instructional groups, and d) the gender comparison of the observed proficiency. After the pre-test, followed by three weeks of instructions, a post test was administered and the findings suggested marginal increase in students’ written English proficiency with variations between the instructional groups, academic disciplines and gender.

The implementation of Regulation 17 in Ontario in the 1910s, which restricted the use of the French language in Ontario schools, spawned a Canadian identity debate. The Anglophone population in Canada generally supported an imperialist identity; meanwhile the Francophone population generally favoured a nationalist one. Historians have uncovered, in most cases, the print media written in English also favoured the imperialist argument, while the print media written in French typically espoused the nationalist ideology. However, historians have failed to examine the Sudubry Star, an English written newspaper in the city of Sudbury, Ontario, with a population nearly split between Anglophones and Francophones. Using the lens intellectual historiography, this paper will, for the first time, demonstrate that the Sudbury Star treaded against the current and promoted a nationalist argument rather than an imperialist one.

This article discusses the pejorativity of the German noun ‘Arsch’ (ass, arse) as a single lexeme and as a constituent of linguistic idioms. The first part explores the pejorative meaning of the lexeme from the perspective of lexical semantics. The second part provides an introduction into the field of phraseology. It further investigates to what extent ‘Arsch’ as a constituent of idioms infuences stylistic aspects and expressivity. The single lexeme ‘Arsch’ is often used to insult and devalue. Therefore, the last part examines - from a semasiologic point of view - if idioms containing ‘Arsch’ adhere to a preferred area of denotation.

The long tradition of Hindi Literature has many literary trends that began to emerge from the tenth century leading up to the present. The ballads of bravery and valour, the poetry of different sects of Naths, Siddhas and Jainas and also Vidyapati and Amir Khusro were written during early period called Adikaal (1000-1318) of Hindi literature. Devotional poetry called Bhaktikaal (1318-1643) includes the aphorisms of Kabir, the Padmavata of Jayasi, the Ramacharitamanas of Tulsidas and the Bhajans of Sur and Mira. The Ritikaal (1643-1843) consists of the poetical rhetoric of Kesavadas, the epigrams of Bihari, the free verse poetry of Ghananand, Bodha, Alam and Thakur. Modern literature called Adhunickaal (1843 to the present) reflects many new literary trends emerged during this period. In the poetry of Ritikaaleen Hindi literature erotic elements became more dominant. During this era poetic forms and theory got dominance and developed to the fullest. Theoretical aspects of literature and the style of writing poetry as an Art Form had reached to a very high level during this period. But at the same time due to the impact of devotional poetry of Bhakti Poets in which they expressed dissatisfaction about the caste system and other religious prejudices present in the society vanished during this period. The Riti poets have composed most of their work on the Krishna Bhakti Cult. The erotic description of Shringaric aspects of Krishna"s life had more attraction for Riti poets rather than other aspects of life. Instead of depicting common man’s problems the Riti poets served the cause of their patrons the feudal lords of that time. Many critics and the writers of the History of Hindi literature have criticized the role of Riti Poets and Riti poetry for not expressing the problems of society. But some of the critics had contradicted the criticism and defended Riti poetry. In the present article Ritikaalin literature has been revaluated, and the relevance of scholars like Ramchandra Shukla has been re-established.
