The results of a project concerning compact two-stream superheterodyne free electron lasers (TSFEL), which can be constructed on the basis of MLIA-accelerators (multi-channel linear induction accelerators), are presented. A specific characteristic of the considered system is that the intensive relativistic electron beam source is constructed on the basis of a two-beam MLIA-accelerator. The design-scheme of the compact MLIA-accelerator is proposed and analyzed. It is shown that the main merit of the studied devices is their potential compactness.

This paper reveals critical design parameters of VLWIR HgCdTe photovoltaic (PV) detectors best suited for remote sensing and ballistic missile defense applications. Infrared sensors using photoconductive (PC) devices have limited performance capabilities. PV HgCdTe detectors offer much higher impedance and lower low frequency noise compared to PC detectors and do not require DC bias power. The compositional control and optimum detector architecture of VLWIR detectors are identified to achieve very large cutoff wavelength capability, most ideal for remote sensing and BMD applications.

Multiple beam devices offer RF generation with increased efficiency and bandwidth at reduced operating voltage. Previous such devices primarily utilized Brillouin focused electron guns; however, these are limited to lower power operation. Development of confined flow multiple beam guns will allow generation of significantly higher RF power levels. Research on confined flow multiple beam guns producing 100 MW of electron beam power is presented.

Wave propagation along a plasma waveguide is one of the most interesting and attractive topics in plasma physics and microwave plasma electronics. In the authors' previous paper (Liu Shenggang et al, Physical Rev. E, vol. 65, no. 3, pp. 036411-1-036411-8, 2002), a lot of interesting and important features in physics were revealed for wave propagation along waveguides filled with moving magnetized plasma (MMPW). A theoretical study on the non-reciprocal properties and the extreme relativistic cases are given in this paper. The numerical calculations show that in a MMPW there exists a non-reciprocal property, and it strongly depends upon the drift velocity of the plasma. As a consequence, the wave propagation in the opposite direction is quite different from that in the positive direction.

The paper presents a new source of radiation with highest spatial coherency (SPLASER) using properties of spherical excitons to utilize multipole waves of cosmic origin in millimeter, visible and UV ranges. In particular, the appropriate combination of Splaser with a telescope gives essential rising of the angular resolution and information density in real time.

We report the design of a gyrotron oscillator for continuous operation at 460 GHz at a power level of up to 50 W. The gyrotron oscillator will be used in dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) studies with a 700 MHz (/sup 1/H), 16.5 T NMR spectrometer and will operate at the second harmonic of the electron cyclotron frequency.

MBE-grown quantum dots of HgSe:Fe were investigated by infrared magnetotransmission using the single-turn-coil technique to generate megagauss fields. Due to the inhomogeneity of the dot size a broad absorption of the 10.6 /spl mu/m radiation is observed beyond the 2D cyclotron resonance at higher fields.

Diamond disks made using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique are now in common use as gyrotron output windows. The low millimeter wave losses and excellent thermal conductivity of diamond have made it possible to use such windows in gyrotrons with /spl sim/1 MW output power and pulse length up to and greater than 10 s. A ubiquitous characteristic of diamond gyrotron windows is the presence of apparent hot spots in the infrared images registered during RF pulses. Many of these spots are co-located with bright points seen in visible video images. The spots do not seem to compromise the integrity of the windows. Analysis of the infrared observations on several different gyrotrons operating at the DIII-D Tokamak are reported.
