Computer-generated holograms (diffractive elements) can be used for shaping mm-wave beams and for producing complex field configurations. The radio holograms studied here are amplitude holograms. An amplitude hologram has been proven to be a feasible alternative as a focusing element in a compact antenna test range (CATR) at mm-wavelengths. Amplitude holograms have also been demonstrated in other mm- and submm-wave beamshaping applications - e.g., on the creation of nondiffracting radiowave Bessel beams, a radio wave vortex, and also a custom-designed beam pattern.

The lattice vibration spectra of potassium lithium niobate (KLN) single crystals have been studied using Raman spectroscopy. The characteristic Raman peak due to the bend vibration mode of the [NbO/sub 6/]/sup 7-/ octahedra is split into three peaks as the Li ion content of the KLN crystal is increased, supporting that the vibration modes of the octahedrons are slightly perturbed by the bend vibration mode of Li in C-site.

The Terahertz part of the electromagnetic spectrum defines a gap in solid state technology. This is most apparent if one focuses on sources. In this presentation we review experiments with the UCSB free-electron laser that have revealed the rich phenomena related to photon assisted transport in semiconductor quantum transport devices and the use of quasi-optical arrays and waveguide structures to measure Terahertz admittance of electrically biased devices.

It is well-known that biological objects are responsive to low-intensity microwave irradiation. We studied the existence of biological response on a cellular level. It is obvious that the membrane is a critical cell structure for microwave influence. We compared ion flux density through the membrane for irradiated and nonirradiated erythrocytes, using human blood erythrocytes cleansed in a physiological solution.

Transmission lines periodically loaded with varactor diodes have been recently proposed as potential candidates for the generation of millimeter and submillimeter waves by frequency multiplication from microwave sources. In this work, we propose the combination of these distributed structures with photonic bandgaps (PBGs) to improve conversion efficiency to the desired harmonic. Harmonic balance simulations of a PBG-CPW quintupler designed to provide output power at 100 GHz are indicative of significant improvement in conversion efficiency as compared to the structure with PBG removed.

The gyro-amplifier is currently of great interest for millimeter wave radar applications. A novel Ka-band frequency-tripling gyroklystron amplifier with clustered cavities is proposed. The output power and bandwidth are designed as 100 kW and 1%, respectively, and a permanent magnet will be used. This gyro-amplifier basically satisfies the demands of advanced radar transmitters.

Fabrication methods for integrated, GaAs-on-Quartz, Schottky based sideband generators and frequency multipliers operating at 200 GHz and 600 GHz are discussed. Important attributes include sub-micron anodes, air-bridged Schottky contacts, epitaxial layer bonding, low temperature (<200/spl deg/C) processing, and quasi-ohmic contacts. Photos of completed circuits and test results are presented.

Terahertz (THz) frequency spectroscopic imaging studies of teeth are reported. The aim is to establish the characteristic properties of the enamel and dentine at these high frequencies. Changes to the THz characteristics as a result of various types of tooth decay are reported showing the potential of this technique for dental diagnosis.

The possibilities of quasi-optical millimeter wave (MMW) imaging of concealed objects' MM radiation are analyzed theoretically and experimentally. The influence of spatial ringing artifacts and coherent speckle noises are analyzed, coherence noises as well as other disturbing factors on quality of the active MM images are investigated. Method of synthesizing of MM images of enhanced quality and information content are proposed. The good agreement between theoretical results and experiment is achieved.
