Abstract This chapter presents the first results of a pilot study aimed at identifying the main reason for undertaking or not undertaking a snow sports school trip in Germany. A questionnaire was developed and a small sample of schools in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia was interviewed. The results show that snow sports are still very present in school sport although many schools might need more support, skilled teachers and accessible information.

Abstract This chapter describes the landed negotiation dynamic of a particular group of lifestyle migrants in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. This group consists of relatively young migrants who intend to live and work in Whistler but do not make it past 2 years and leave. This research explores the landed negotiation of this cohort, including their motivation for migration, their landed challenges, and the perceived differences in those who stay to work and those who leave. The value of this research is to shed light on an under-represented subgroup of lifestyle migrants who also represent an important labour cohort in resort communities where there is often labour instability.

Abstract This chapter discusses a historic profile of corporate ownership of mountain resorts in North America before focusing on the changing ownership structure of Whistler's mountain operations (British Columbia, Canada). Reports in the media are then drawn upon, including perspectives from representatives of the Whistler community and Vail Resorts' corporate managers, to trace reactions to the impact of Whistler Blackcomb's change in ownership. The discussion addresses the challenges of 'corporate-community relations' with a particular focus on the influence of new corporate culture on Whistler's long-standing record of excellent corporate-community engagement.

Abstract This chapter summarizes the third part of this book which offers an understanding of tourism development and sustainability issues of relevance to tourism in winter settings. This section covers topics on historical features of ski activities, literature on ski and snow sports industry development and economic sustainability, writings on the challenges of sustainability of ski resort communities, and articulating significant changes in organizational ownership and its effect on ski resort development. Additionally this section provides meaningful literature on the transformation, diversification and future of the ski and snow sports industry, minimizing risk of winter alpine activity, and the challenges and progression of significant leadership, growth, success aspects and future sustainability of ski resorts.

Abstract This chapter examines the three important target groups of German, Austrian and Italian skiers and snowboarders to test new development and marketing opportunities for South Tyrol, an alpine winter destination. The study examines (i) whether the main motives and expectations concerning winter holidays in South Tyrol differ among the main target regions; (ii) whether these expectations are likely to influence destination choice; and (iii) whether cultural experiences (such as regional specialities, the atmosphere in the provided infrastructure and the southern alpine ambience) contribute to a 'special' holiday experience and increase a region's attractiveness.

Abstract This chapter addresses the economic relevance of winter tourism based on two case studies in Switzerland and Germany which provide the opportunity to compare the expenditure behaviour and economic impact of different segments of winter tourists from alpine skiers on groomed slopes to eco-tourist snowshoe hikers. Both studies also allow comparisons with the spending behaviour of non-winter tourists.

Abstract This chapter examines tourists' reaction to the development of renewable energy installations in the European alpine area. In particular, it examines (1) which of the available infrastructure facilities used to generate renewable energy finds the greatest degree of acceptance among tourists; (2) which of these renewable energy installations could have an impact on further tourism development; (3) whether there is a difference between summer tourists' and winter tourists' acceptance of renewable energy; and (4) whether local production of renewable energy could lead to a competitive advantage for tourist destinations and how important the supply of renewable energy is for tourists' choice of destination.

Winter tourism and seasonality in Iceland. 冰岛的冬季旅游和季节性。
Pub Date : 2019-01-01 DOI: 10.1079/9781786395207.0442
P. Arnason, J. Welling
Abstract This chapter presents an overview of how tourism seasonality in Iceland has changed in recent years, with particular emphasis on a case study area, Hornafjörđur municipality, in rural south Iceland. The chapter pieces together available data from many and somewhat disparate sources, in order to build up a description of how winter tourism currently stands in Hornafjörđur in relation to the situation at the national and regional levels in Iceland. Following this, it presents some thoughts on how winter tourism took root in the case study area, and whether or not this novel development there is likely to be sustained in the future.
