Abstract This chapter addresses the developments in tourism governance, along with the characteristics and processes that define tourism governance. In particular, it aims (i) to understand, in the French Alps context, how the organization of tourism destinations will evolve, due to both the diversification of tourism and institutional reform, and (ii) to identify the drivers of these changes. Furthermore, the chapter show how public policies dedicated to ski resorts can help ski resorts and their territories in regenerating tourism governance.

Abstract This introductory chapter briefly presents two observations emanating from this book on winter tourism: (1) that ski resorts worldwide face many common challenges and can learn from each other; and (2) that the respective development concept and related set of socio-economic and cultural conditions have a significant influence on future development and requires adaptation processes.

Abstract This chapter investigates stakeholders' perceptions of the factors affecting the success of a destination, in this case the three biggest ski resorts in Finland. The study suggests that effective collaboration and leadership are key facilitators to the success of a destination.

Abstract This chapter aims is to review trends in some of the main winter recreation activities in the Swedish mountains in order to discuss associated challenges and opportunities through the lens of such mega trends. To do so, it takes advantage of previous studies of mountain recreation in Sweden and analyses participation trends with a special focus on downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.

Abstract This chapter focuses on the six most popular alternative winter sport activities in Tyrol (Austria): backcountry skiing, ski touring on slopes (i.e. skiing up the hill on the fringe of groomed ski slopes), winter hiking, tobogganing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. More precisely, it wants to explore the people's activity profiles and their satisfaction with the existing offer in Tyrol. Special attention is given to the motivation to practise alternative winter sport.

Abstract This chapter aims to encourage cableway operators and ski area managers to introduce environmental management systems (EMSs) in their organizations by presenting different experiences and applications. To this end, the chapter outlines key aspects in different settings by describing two separate case study areas (Schmittenhöhe in Austria, and Bansko in Bulgaria) and presenting the experiences and insights gained in each of them.

Abstract This chapter presents two studies: (1) 'China Inbound Service' a project to investigate the needs in alpine destinations to host Chinese guests and (2) a pilot study regarding nature perception of tourism students in Shanghai. The results of the first study give a good insight into the needs, behaviour and satisfaction of Chinese guests in alpine destinations in Switzerland. The second study offers insights on nature and landscape perception of potential Chinese tourists as a basis for tourism product development in the Alps.

Abstract This chapter discusses why limiting winter tourism development might be worthwhile and which approaches exist to limit it, focusing on spatial planning and protected areas. In doing so it concentrates on the western part of the European Eastern Alps, which is one of the most intensively developed mountain areas in terms of ski tourism globally.
