Abstract This chapter refers to long-term observations and research carried out in different touristic environments in the French Alps over the past 30 years. Focusing on the dilemmas and challenges of tourism policy and engineering facing climate and cultural change, it examines and discusses the processes and conditions in which the sustainable winter sports transition operates and does not operate. Indeed, on the territorial and professional levels, both very creative dynamics and a logic of inertia and (mis)adaptations can be observed at the price of strong functional contradictions and strategic tensions. This chapter attempts to show that the challenge of this tension between creativity and inertia is the exploration and affirmation of new development models that are better suited to changing local and global contexts.

Abstract This chapter analyses the role of risk and danger in outdoor recreation with a special focus on winter tourism, and then presents recent findings on accidents and injuries when practising winter sport activities. Finally, this chapter provides recommendations to reduce the number of accidents and related injuries in the future, focusing on the European Alps.

Abstract This chapter discusses the pillars that have enabled the development of the Dolomite winter tourism offer in the Italian Alps, the limits of this model and the challenges that stakeholders in the sector are now facing. The analysis is based on findings from fieldwork conducted in some of the Dolomites' main tourist destinations with key players in the winter tourism sector (the directors of the destination management organizations and ski lift companies), which aimed to discover whether (and if so, how) the concept of environmental sustainability is influencing the management of winter tourism offers.

Abstract Besides being the crucial basic innovation for ski tourism, the technological progress through innovations in cable cars and surface lifts (CCSLs) also has had an important influence on the further development of ski tourism. The main aim of this chapter is to illustrate these influences in different development stages. The chapter frames CCSLs as innovations in tourism and then presents in more detail five developments of ski tourism as consequences of technological change. The final section sheds a light on the economic relevance of CCSLs.

Abstract This chapter explores whether mountain tourism destinations can be fully sustainable, or if sustainability within the destinations remains more of an idealized state. The study focused on the development of Whistler by exploring whether its sustainable practices could serve as a potential framework for future implementations of practices within other destinations. A survey was conducted among millennial tourists (n=82) and residents (n=41) to elaborate on their perspective towards sustainability, in relation to their awareness and their actual behaviour, within winter and summer mountain destinations with a focus on Whistler.

Abstract This chapter examines climate change perceptions in the context of nature-based tourism in the case study area of western Maine, USA. It identifies the perceptions of risks and challenges associated with changes in climate, the variables that influence perceptions of risk, and the behavioural intention of tourism stakeholders and recreation users as associated with climate change perceptions. Results from both qualitative (tourism stakeholder) and quantitative research (recreation users) approaches are integrated to provide a richer understanding of climate change risk perceptions to guide more effective sustainable tourism planning efforts in light of changing conditions in tourism destinations.

Abstract This chapter discusses the influence of climate change on winter tourism development in the Alps. Adaptation strategies to climate change are also presented and analysed. Although technical adaptation still receives the most attention, the chapter also highlights innovative projects that reveal the potential of alternative adaptation strategies.

Abstract This chapter examines motivations associated with winter recreation at Vail Pass (Colorado, USA) reported by motorized recreationists (i.e. snowmobiler), non-motorized recreationists (e.g. backcountry skier) and a hybrid group (i.e. snowmobile-assisted skier). The chapter examines whether snowmobilers, skiers and hybrid participants differ relative to their desire for solitude, social interaction, physical fitness, and thrill-seeking.
