[The zinc concentration in the dental plaque after zinc chloride mouth rinsing in relation to previous mouth rinsings with different pH values].
P Dobl, H C Gabsch, H Nossek

The zinc content in dental plaque after mouth rinsing with 0.2% zinc chloride solution is dependent on previous mouth rinsing with different pH value. Zinc retention is strongly reduced by rinsing with citric acid solution (pH value 1.0). Zinc retention is growing with increasing pH value when rinsing was made with sodium citrate buffer solution with increasing pH value. A rinsing with sodium citrate buffer solution (pH value 6.3) following a 0.2% zinc chloride solution leads to a drastic reduction of the zinc content. However, a chlorhexidine solution with the same pH value leaves no washing out effect.

[The effect of zinc chloride mouthwashes on caries-inducing plaque streptococci. 3. The antibacterial effect of zinc chloride on the species Str. mutans, Str. sanguis and Str. salivarius in dental plaque].
H Nossek, P Dobl

The quantitative behaviour of Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguis and Streptococcus salivarius has been examined in initial findings and after application of 0.4% zinc chloride solution. After a 7 day rinsing the number of colony developing units of the species Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguis in the plaque decreased to about 30% of the determined initial values. The proportions of the species Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguis in the total streptococcus flora of the dental plaque were not changed by zinc chloride solution. The percentage of the Streptococcus salivarius increased significantly from 1% to 4% of the total number of streptococci.

[The oral health knowledge and behavior as well as the oral findings in young adults with different courses of education (the Dresden prevention study)]. [
J P Würfel, W Klimm, I Natusch, G Mladek

In a dental-psychological investigation 100 young adults, aged 18-25, characterized by different courses of education, were subject to a standardized interview, action oriented diagnostics and dental examination. Knowledge, behaviour as well as state of oral health were different and in all did not come up to our expectations; but there were some correlations. It is indicated to optimize knowledge, behaviour and state of oral health by means of individual and collective measures taking educational specifics into consideration.

[The plaque- and caries-inhibiting efficacy of an amine fluoride/tin fluoride combination in an animal experiment on rats]. [
L Stösser, L Schulz, E Schulz, W Künzel

A similar plaque inhibition by was found after daily topical application of CHX or AmF/SnF2 in comparison with a placebo on rats. The fluoride combination exhibited a significant caries protective influence which was equal to AmF when the last was used in the same concentration. More concentrated AmF has shown a higher caries reducing effect and higher fluoride accumulation in the enamel surface layer of teeth. AmF/SnF2 could been recommended to individual plaque control with parallel caries protective effect.

[Qualitative marginal gap research on amalgam fillings].
M Weiland, A Kaiser, S Borrmann, W Klimm

Using x-ray spectroscopy the inorganic contents of the interface tooth restoration of conventional and gamma-2-reduced amalgam fillings were analysed after short and long clinical application. Qualitative difference did not exist between interface layer of both amalgam types. The amalgam elements mercury, silver and copper were not detected, but tin occurred everywhere. Zinc and oxygen were frequently analysed in the interface layer. Calcium, phosphorus, sodium and magnesium were detected, too.

[The micromorphological reaction patterns of human periodontium]. [
A Lehm, P Gängler

Compared to the normal micromorphologic features of the human periodontium typical histopathologic reaction patterns in different age groups and under various functional conditions, especially in older individuals, are described. It is, therefore, concluded that by characterizing large autoptic material of teeth exhibiting periodontitis, in old human subjects regenerative tissue responses aimed at infection defence are in principle more pronounced. Junctional epithelium attachment at the cement surface and even at dental calculus, active bone formation and reformation, and moderate apposition of cementum are decisive for the pathomorphological picture of marginal periodontitis also in very old human subjects.

[Speckle photographic studies--a supplementary method for instrumental occlusive analysis]. [
W Reinhardt, R Reinhardt, L Wenke

A new three-dimensional method--speckle photography--introduced into stomatology. For judgement of occlusive and functional interests we examined 20 young adults (10 male and 10 female) aged from 21 to 25. The clinical results together with speckle-photographic model evaluations yield useful hints about morphological and functional connections in the orofacial system.

[The microstructure and corrosive properties of the nonferrous casting alloys Gisadent NCA, NCS 1 and KCM 83 before and after casting].

Nonprecious alloys (NEM) applied in dental practice often show widely differing material properties after casting. This is caused by subjective and objective differences in manufacturing of these alloys with a given technology as well as by varying composition and structure of the alloys within and in between different lots. For homogeneous composition of crude specimens technologically caused variance of casting condition itself leads to considerable differentiation of casting results. If the original state of crude alloy forms is very different then there will be a levelling out and/or increase of scattering of material parameters after casting. Optimized computed-controlled casting technology in combination with defined muffle ring size could result in reproducible casting results.
